Suicidal Christmas tree lights? I wouldn't even trust them to be even close to being OK even in a damp environment, never mind outside. If Clive hasn't already suggested it, you could alter/remove the resistors in each LED and power them from a good isolated DC supply? It's also a shame that they don't produce those black blob chips in a standard DIL package where you could make your own SAFE Christmasy lights, or do they, anyone seen them in DIL package with a Datasheet?
