Tin whiskers?

The only thing I can think of for this fault is the issue with tin whiskers growing between switch contacts, especially in miniature tactile switches.
I'll upload a close-up of the inside of the switch.

Whenever I think of tin whiskers, I imagine them belonging to a tin cat. You would definitely hear the clanking when it comes through the cat flap late at night.

If that's a common failure, you may find a new switch available on eBay and a video for fitting it on YouTube.

Thanks Big Clive! I had never heard of this, very interesting. I've noticed some weirdness in my 2000 Audi with the switch that initiates the driving lights. You have to wiggle it and push it quite a few times to engage it or disengage it. I wonder if that might be the problem - or of course the thing has just worn out. Not sure if they were using tin solder in Germany in 2000.
Very cool and yet another useful bit of knowledge gleaned from your channel. Amazing stuff.
