Holographic fly repeller (FLICKER ALERT)

An unusual device bought from a local shop (Home Bargains in Edinburgh).

It has a spinning holographic blade that must appear as some sort of monster predator to flies.

The battery/USB switching circuitry is very novel and intriguing.

I am going to take it apart to have a looksee, as i'm kind of intrigued, I'll let you know what I find.

I'll guess the charger may be a diode and resistor trickle charging the NiMH at low current. The wires may be on tabs with hot glue to reinforce them.

Hi Clive, after watching this - I bought one from Aldi at £4.99. When I looked in the battery compartment, it has a single NiMh batter with the wires Hot glued onto the teminals! yet it is being charged at 5.1 volts. It also spins slowly compared to the one you showed. I will do a strip down tomorrow and tell you what I find- I may even do a video now I have a proper grown up Cell phone.

Mike Hughes

Yes they are.

Big Clive

So are they using the mosfet instead of a diode to minimize the voltage drop when battery is operating?

Jonas

They get used a lot here over Biltong displays... Though the ones ive seen aren't holographic thy are just a bunch of fishing line that spins. Think its more the movement that bothers the files

Pierre

It was about £6.

Big Clive

How much did yours cost, Clive? They look to be around $30 to $40 here in Australia.

NN Thomas

It reduces electrical noise.

Big Clive

Some of the restaurants (bakeries) use them around here. Not sure if they work, but they keep the health inspectors happy. Looks identical to the one you featured.

In the early days there was a little capacitor soldered to the terminals of the motor. Had that someting to do with emc and fcc compliance?

Mike Weijmans

Ideal for the BBQ to keep the flies away from the food. Must get a couple.

Mike Hughes

My family uses them for campouts to keep flies away from the food. They work ok.

The Griffiths Family

See these the other day in the hardware store may give it a go
