Old unreleased video from past year

I didn't release this video at the time, because I felt I messed it up a bit.

Now I'm reviewing it, it's not too bad, even if I was a bit perplexed as to what to call the stator.

I was expecting a capacitor for speed control, but it's simpler than that.

That motor design goes back many years. They were used to power record player turntables at least as early as the 1940's. I have also seen variations on the design, including one with windings on the shading poles used as a servo in a vacuum tube chart recorder!

As Big Clive mentions, the rotor should move freely. For a fan that old, the oil in the bearings has likely dried up. Adding fresh oil sometimes helps. You might get a few more years by disassembling the motor, and thoroughly degreasing the bearings, reassembling, and adding light weight oil may give it a few more years. Or the bearings are just worn. Is it worth it...? Maybe sentimental value (a service fan?) Probably not.

Thanks for the advise. The fan runs quite smoothly, but as mentioned it has started to "rattle" a little, so the bearings have seen better days. I tried to have a look inside (meaning I opned it) I hoped there would be some capacitors for adjusting the motor speed, but it seems the motor just has a seperate wires, one for each speed + a common wire of course. So I presume I should focus on fixing the bearings - or I probably buy a new one for a couple of 10'ers.

Does it feel stiff to turn? It should spin freely. The speed control may also have capacitors that can degrade.

Big Clive

It's just a simple switch that selects off or between the two taps of the motor.

Big Clive

any reason you didn't explane the switch ?

I have a couple of those things. The oldest started squawking around 15 years old. I took it apart, cleaned and repacked the [upper] plastic bearing with multipurpose car grease. It's been fine since. The newer one is gorgeously whooshy. Higher current but lower power factor. It's the one I sleep with ;)

Shaded pole motor? Never heard of that.

A motor at it's deepest level is a rotating transformer.

Talking about fans. I have one of those floor standing fans, not sure if that's the proper name. It's just a simpel fan with 3 speeds controlled by 4 mechanical buttons. So no fancy electronics/leds or displays :-) Lately it seems to have problems starting. On the two lower levels it won't start at all, on the highest level it will start if turning it on/off repeatly a few times. When it finally starts, it runs very slow and takes about half a minute before reaching full speed. After it has started it is possible to switch to the lower two speeds. For clarity the fan is around 10 - 15 years old. Any ideas what is going on. It has become a little noisy (rattels?) so I presume the bearings might be giving up.

Nothing wrong with that review, thanks Clive. Can't help but think it was expensive at £10 though. Maybe I'm just out of touch with what things cost these days...
