The blob chip seems to have borne the brunt of the carnage.

Unless there are spikes on the supply, it's very hard to get 240V to jump any sort of gap (Paschen's law). But when a spike causes a spark the air is ionized and becomes conductive, allowing a half-wave of potentially high current to flow and that's what causes the damage. So when we test equipment, spikes must be applied *on top of* mains.

2024-08-26 12:54:43 +0000 UTCWhen you connected it, it looked like the power switch being off completely avoided all damage, and only when it was turned on, then plugged in did it explode. Did a simple low voltage, low current (and presumably quite physically small) switch really prevent 240W of doom from doing any damage at all? I know switches are on or off, but on a product expecting 4.5v, the power switch preventing any sort of damage blew my mind a bit.
