LIDL UV bug zapper

This unit does actually use a small fluorescent UVA tube to lure bugs to its zapping wires. One of the most interesting things about this unit was the strange choice of a ballast for the fluorescent tube. I thought it was going to be a high frequency electronic ballast, but it's somewhat cheaper than that.

The unit also states that the tube can't be changed, but that does not apply to technical people like us.

I have one of these, but the horizontal version. Circuitry is identical. It's been doing a good job for over a year now. Tube ends show no sign of blackening, so I think the 2x 100R resistors must be doing enough of a job. I also wonder if beacuse of the pulses, the capacitor across the starter contacts is being utilized more, allowing the cathodes to be constantly warmed?

Technical restrictions need not apply.
