3D printing pen

A look inside a 3D printing pen. I'm not sure how much fun you could have with this. It's certainly novel being able to form things out of molten plastic. But not neat things.

The internal construction is very neat though, and it does work well. They've cheated on the temperature sensing a bit, and used heinous multiplexing of an LCD display, LEDs and buttons.

I didn't draw the schematic for this one, as the multiplexing was cramped and hard to probe.

I would guess it did, but didn't test that.

Did the heater output respond in any way to the 'thermostat'?

Wow- that is just amazing, and before watching you, I didn't even know these existed.

It does look like a "professional" version with more control. The basic pens are cheap, and certainly fun to have a play with.

Heh, just posted a similar comment on Youtube... that guy is amazing, and I suspect the pen he has is pretty well-designed too. Not only does he do sculptural stuff like Pokemon and anime characters, but he has also done more practical stuff like repairing a tripod and making a custom phone case. I've been tempted to get one, but I'd never get the results he does.

Now if I'd been able to find one like that... I did almost buy a pink one, but eBay blocked the purchase as the seller apparently had issues.

I guessed someone would have pushed it to extremes. That must have taken a very long time.

Missed opportunity. https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/1fnk3gl/filament_got_stuck_in_3d_pen/

The youtube channel 3D Sanago demonstrates what an artist can do with a 3D printing pen. Astoundingly skillful. Here's an example: https://youtu.be/Gdw-v30-F-o?si=dMJZE0Se-JCNyF9B
