Fixing an ice making machine

They are usually very similar inside, and tend to have the same type of faults - mainly involving water ingress.
But they are often very easy to fix for those of a technical inclination.
Even if not economic to fix, they have a very handy compressor inside if it is still working.

2024-11-08 14:11:28 +0000 UTCA solution I have found for the premature shrinking of the heat shrink tubing is to stuff several of the thin flat toothpicks into it. The heatshrink now cannot shrink when you solder close to it.

Got a £40 Aldi ice machine in 2021 to use to build a workshop coolant chiller but family wanted it to remain a virgin and stay in the kitchen. They were right, it's very handy. I did end up with a chiller, but it was based on a 500w water cooler (vs the 120w ice maker), and the 6 generic 120mm fans I tried to use to replace the 50w AC fan were not even close to moving enough air. Might be worth adding a note that not all fans are equal and to check the radiator temperature?

2024-10-18 17:40:06 +0000 UTCThese machines are a really cool idea. I have a GE opal in my bedroom. I use distilled water to help keep the calcium and other minerals from building up. I also got mine for free, it was in a dumpster still in the box.

2024-10-18 08:38:29 +0000 UTCA normal cocktail is 10% alcohol which would freeze at -4c. Even a generous alcoholic mix at 50/50 is between 16% and 20% alcohol which would freeze at -8c. So you may have to get the temperature probe out and see what the ice maker can bring the water down to.
