Not sure what to release

I'm not sure whether I should release the first video, this one with the flame test or both. Tricky.

And I still don't know the reason for the recall. Maybe a batch went out with the wrong plastic.

Not sure what to release

Flash to Internal Earth Bar - had "fun" of investigating identical situation while working for MK competitor. MK internal design is very similar to the one I've worked on. Main issue steams from BS standard requiring only 6mm distance between bars which in reality is not enough in specific conditions as we seen +12mm arcs initiated by switching operation. Unfortunately that fault can go unspotted during BS required tests due to some "vague" wording in test specifications and test setup

There must be some reason for it. The plastic of this unit did seem to be self extinguishing, but with a carbon bridge the power could sustain arcing.

Watching the eFIXX video I've just had a thought: it's Grenfell, isn't it? MK have reviewed all their stuff very conservatively and decided to pull some. That's just a guess.

Sorry for the same YT URL I posted. I didn't see your comment.

Hi Clive, I found this information. It would indeed be about fire hazard due to arc flash in the switches. Nothing is said about how or where... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRIc9YIfkn4

Patrick Craenen

If you're worried about YT punishing you for flamey fun, why not just put this video as unlisted (but public) on a second channel and then link to it from the description in the original less combustible first video?

Jon Knight

My two cents say release it, but maybe you could combine the two, and have the flame test as a "Bonus Extra Footage" at the end (if you're worried about repetition?) :)

The only thing I can think of is where the plugs plug in. I wonder if that causes movement of one of the parts going to the switch making enough of a gap for an arc.

Namirred

it's been recalled, release it as a matter of public safety awareness ;-)

Eddie C

I'm not sure this one adds enough to risk possibly upsetting Youtube censors. I'd probably just put a note in the description of the original saying that the plastic wouldn't stay alight when you tried to burn it.

tim1724

Ooooh, go on. It'd be fun. :D

“The product presents a high risk of fire as it has been identified that when the switch on the socket is being switched on, or switched off, or whilst it is under load, there is a possibility for an arc flash to occur. This could cause the socket and surrounding materials to ignite, causing a fire. The affected sockets do not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.”

The reason for the recall is explained in this video: https://youtu.be/sRIc9YIfkn4

Off hand I'd say both.

Paul Ste. Marie

I'd recon it's the earth they recalled for.

Umbre

I'm definitely not going to do that.

Big Clive

It's odd because an arc flash usually needs phase and either neutral or earth in the immediate vicinity.

Big Clive

In a way it feels like repetition.

Big Clive

What's the downside of releasing both?

plasse

Just read the gvnt announcement page that says "...there is a possibility for an arc flash to occur" So maybe load it up with unreasonable number of heaters and see if you can recreate an arc flash event when switching it and film that to go with what investigation you've already got. https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls/product-safety-report-mk-electric-mk-essentials-electrical-three-pin-sockets-with-switches-2411-0130

Russell Couper

Maybe reach out and contact MK and ask them if they can give you the tech details for the recall??

Russell Couper

I've not taken many sockets apart but one thing could be the zinc coated steel earthing strap in addition to it only contacting with one side of the pin giving insufficiently low earthing resistance ?

Russell Couper

add it on to the original, or release both. the fire test was interesting and i'm also curious to learn what is wrong with the thing that warants a recall!

devttyUSB0

melty moments might upset the youtube monster😂 you and that lighter seem to make the monster tweak out.

james knight

Both I'd say - it's not like you're saying anything critical to MK here and they were both interesting videos!
