Is this suitable for release?

While I was in Glasgow I bought some Muslim Ramadan countdown calendars to see what symbols they used on the chocolate pieces.

Glasgow has quite a diverse range of cultures, so the supermarkets stock some very interesting cultural stuff.

Is this suitable for release?

Comments

Glasgow has a very diverse culture too. Just about every religion.

Big Clive

He thought it was fine, and he said the sweet treat once the sun goes down would be appreciated.

Alan Gray

.

Lorcán Adrain

That said, I was thinking of showing this to some of my friends who do Ramadan, will let you know what they say.

Alan Gray

I’d love to see this for the shits and giggles, but maybe give this one a miss my friend.

Alan Gray

Please release the video. It was made respectfully and truthfully. I'm in Australia which has a high level of Muslim immigration, and I've never seen one of these before.

Loscha

It'd be interesting if you investigated who'd made it. If it's the same companies (and factories) that make the Christmas ones, and they couldn't be arsed to ask an actual Muslim for more symbols 🙂

Rasmus

Religion can be a touchy subject... especially since Google bows to The Marmalade Shitgibbon.

Russell Levine

Well said

plasse

Seems okay to me.

Mark Trombley

Agree there is nothing offensive here. But it is not really related to the typical channel content. So would suggest don't release.

Keith Lambell

By the way, if you want some of the stuffs from Israel, feel free to poke me, I'll be glad to send you some diverse package, there's all sorts of unusual Muslim and Jewish electronic stuff, from clocks showing Muslim prayer times and little electric counting thingies used for prayers, to Jewish lamps which turn off by closing the shutter as opposed to turning it off electrically, neat stuff for smaller markets!

Michael Vokabre

In Israel there are some chocolate hannukiah candles (made by Kinder) for Hannukah, but not like a calendar, just candle-shaped candies. Usually when the market is smaller the produce is not as "fancy", similar to how in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, some other countries one can find 31-day calendars counting down to the New Year's Eve (the main winter holiday in ex-USSR) which is cool as it's more than what western kids are getting, but unlike western "advent calendars" it's always just chocolates.

Michael Vokabre

Someone will probably be interpreting this wrong, i'm not sure if it's worth risking that

Bastian

A short requires vertical formatting throughout.

Big Clive

I think the calendar lasts for the duration of the fasting month. Just like the Xmas type leads up to the big day.

Big Clive

I was thinking they could have made a few more symbols based on lantern styles at least.

Big Clive

Spoilers. It didn't.

Big Clive

I don't see any problem with releasing this. What would you offer as a traditional Scottish treat in return?

AlfaGuy

I don't see a problem with it. But I also see only very little value to it.

lImbus924

I thought it was fine, but if Iran nukes the IOM, we'll know who to blame 🤣

Matty England

I'm not sure its worth the aggro. Somebody will complain. I doubt it'll be a muslim, or even a person of faith, just some karen that thinks Muslims will be offended.

Sog Sussex

Looks like a bit of opportunistic marketing. It's the answer to the question: how do we sell 'advent' calendars in February?

Dave Davies

Nothing offensive in that, and if the inevitable someone does get busted up over it, they will be the sort who actively seek out things to be offended by, so should be ignored.

John Ward

@adrian That much is obvious, but with the German tradition of fasting before "Karneval", for example, you are allowed to eat all day, but try to generally avoid alcohol / fatty food / sweets (or whatever else you want to fast on) for the whole period and eat healthy instead. I knew they were allowed to eat after sunset, but I was not sure if everything was allowed then or if there were still restrictions.

Kevin Bornewasser

Would be tough to fast for a whole month 24 hours. People might die. Fasting all day 30 times seems like a good compromise and also has 30 feasts !

adrian

'Given the choice, I'd prefer the Christmas one'. Choose your religion based on the quality of the chocolate :) . I wonder what an FSM advent calendar is like ? Was the other box the same ? Not sure whether to praise or rebuke the lack of excess wrappings. Maybe Christmas ones don't have silver paper any more either.

adrian

probably more danger of upsetting a Karen than a real Muslim

adrian

I am just about to start watching it but I bet the last window doesn't have a chocolate Prophet Muhammed behind it.

evilution

Perfect as it is, in my opinion.

Paul Schuur

No, i don't see it as disrespectful. The complaints will come from those who object to any mention of the 'others' (people not like them). But you probably known that already. Cheers and thanks for the videos.

Bike Forever

It’s not disrespectful at all. I say go for it! It’s Arabic, always Arabic in Islam.

Amro

I don't dee it as disrespectful- but I'm an atheist.

Mike Hughes

Go ahead Clive, it's a good video and definitely not disrespectful. I reverted to Islam 15 years ago due to some rather destructive lifestyle choices. When the sun goes down, it's party time 😋. There's no particular reason they only used 3 patterns except for laziness.....or efficency i suppose it's called. It's actually a nice gesture showcasing this so I say post it 👍🏻

Stephen Johnston

Publish it as is. Interesting and informative. We live in a multicultural country. I've a muslim friend who sends his daughter to a Catholic school.

Glyn Roberts

I think that's kind of interesting. Thanks Big Clive. I love your curiosity. I'm going to guess there are variations on this like with the Xmass ones from Cadbury or others. I'd have to say the chocolates don't look that great but like you say, are appealing from the standpoint of a treat (and perhaps a story behind each one's symbol)

Dave Frederick AKA @amorphuc

It was interesting & not disrespectful. Odds are someone must be a Muslim for more information.

N. Shaun Tremayne

Maybe cut it down to a short.

Frank

I would probably cut it down to a 45 second short.

Frank

There is nothing wrong with giving the kids a little treat in the evening, given their will brush their teeth before they go to bed.

Frank

It seems fine to release. I don't see or hear anything offensive. The sounds of you masticating are present, so I would say, you are good to go!

Frank

as i understand it the fasting is only during the daytime, and food can be had between sundown and sunrise. still seems odd to me as well, but yeah.

Myriad

Wasn't disrespectful, I wanted to see the chocolate too - you could always cut it down to a short... But if you are worried you will get a violation, might not be worth it - tiktok?

Steve Lemon

Interesting but probably not

Zane Revai

Lovely video. I quite enjoyed having a look inside something I wouldn't normally buy. My main concern with publishing would be the comments section. I could see it go in unexpected directions

plasse

I guess it is interesting but I would say, no(IMHO). Is it worth possibly offending a religious group of people over chocolate?

Lostngone

Interesting... but is this counting down to the start of Ramadan or is it counting down to Eid al-Fitr (or the sugarfeast, as they call it in Germany), which marks the end of Ramadan? Seems counter-intuitive to have a piece of chocolate everyday during a month of fasting, although I am not familiar with the exact rules and what they are and aren't allowed to eat .

Kevin Bornewasser

I was interested in seeing it because you teased it before. But honestly, if I found such video on YT as a normal user, I'd consider it a waste of my time after watching it.

Juraj

Go for it. I'm sure somebody will get their knickers in a twist but oh well. Too bad for them.

LtKernelPanic

It's fine. Eid Mubarak is pronounced ok, the language is Arab, it always is in Islam.
