20g and 50g mystery solder weigh-in
Added 2025-02-27 18:39:20 +0000 UTC
The weight test of the 20g and 50g reels of the mystery solder from Ali-Express.
An X-ray test of the 100g reel of solder showed a composition of 95% lead and 5% tin with a smidgeon of cadmium for good measure.

I only buy juicy lead based solder from Ebay NOS or part used 2nd hand, think I have enough now for the rest of my lifetime.

IF I bought something that far off the advertised weight, it would be going back. If I'm buying a 100g or 20g reel of solder, I expect that weight in solder, with the spool weight tared out of the weight. My go to solder these days is a Harbor Freight 1/2lb spool of 0.8mm 63/37.

I have a part used reel from decades ago, possibly the 80s, "Ersin Multicore" made in England by Multicore Solders Ltd (now out of business), Hemel Hempstead, Herts 60/40 lead tin, 6 cores, 0.71 mm,0.028 in, Size 10. About half used. Approx 58gms gross. And I'm not afraid to use it!
Edit: 60/40 should have been tin/lead - blame my 75 year old eyes with cataracts, glaucoma, Dry AMD, Diabetes Mellitis 2, Meibomian gland dysfunction, and a weak eye muscle - yet I can still drive a car....

I cut the 100g reel open thinking it might have a metal core, but it was just thick and dense plastic.

Super shady. How do they get the spool to weigh so much?

Because lead solder is available in the UK for businesses, why not form a coalition of patreon members who will help buy a shitload of real solder from a reputable UK supplier, and then divvy it up ? Just a thought, also the quality would be guaranteed.

I guessed 10 and 20, so pretty close! Doubling each time.
