The not-so-humble car fuse box

At first glance this looks like a fairly basic fuse box with a high current connector and lots of sub connectors being controlled individually or in groups by relays. But once the cover comes off it reveals an onboard processor and communication network.

It might even be tied to specific vehicles with their VIN code and possibly even store other data like odometer readings to help prevent mileage tampering on old vehicles.

The not-so-humble car fuse box

Comments

My car was in the repair shop for 24 months waiting for a new fuse box during the Covid and chip issues.

Back in the 90s we did something like this for a bus / coach company. It was about 2 square feet in 3oz copper, double-sided. Designed in some DOS-based editor. Above the board were bolted two busbars carrying [presumably unfused] battery feeds. They were about 15 x 3mm. No processors but maybe a transistor or few. The client ran all kinds of temperature rise tests - stuff like double the current at maximum ambient. Anyway it passed. I doubt we could make money doing that kind of thing today. We have one hanging on the wall.

It's progress in terms of ongoing profitability for the manufacturers.

I used to carry the whole wiring diagram, for my Triumph Herald in my head - so this is progress?
