Perplexing "bed mite eliminator" plug

I was expecting this unit to be doing the usual ultrasonic sweep thing, but in reality, although all the circuitry is there it wasn't doing anything. Maybe it's not continuous or maybe somebody screwed up at the factory. Hard to say.

Not that a piezo disk glued to the case like the sounder in many multimeters is actually going to produce much ultrasound.

Just a wild guess, but if the piezo was disconnected, the inductor would feed high voltage pulses to the transistor collector. If this broke down to the base, these high voltages could reach the microprocessor I/O pin and maybe even damage it while leaving the processor core operational. You need to buy another one and see if that one works, and if so, whether you can reproduce the fault by disconnecting the piezo
