I figure the studio is figuring it out. Like a staredown for dramatic effect/emphasis doesn't need to be 15 seconds but it also shouldn't be 2 seconds.

I know that's the point of it, but I think in the original anime they executed and paced the backstory way better which made it way more emotional. Tears kept streaming nonstop for Koala, Fisher Tiger, and Otohime when I first watched😭 Even though I prefer and like the og better, I loved your guys reaction to the backstory and remake. Another goated reaction🔥

Indeed One Piece is made to be long and that's completely fine, but bad pacing can kill the excitement for a show and One Piece is notorious for having it in some arcs. Let's take in consideration this is an anime problem only, since animators artificially stretch scenes to give them a breathing room in production, the viewer gains nothing from it. Besides, the detail you mentioned is clarified later.
