"show don't tell" is already an unwritten rule of visual media. luffy as a character is the EPITOME of show don't tell. lines like "who says pirates ought to be scary?" are so corny and on the nose and i don't even believe luffy would ever say anything like that in the first place. they're sprinkled in to give us sparknotes of the characters and especially luffy, who sometimes rubs western audiences the wrong way with how little he SEEMS to care about the "backstories" of his crew. but they end up turning him into a goody two shoes youth pastor boy scout instead of a charismatic but hilariously simpleminded, childlike wonder-ing adventurer who possesses a hidden piercing emotional intelligence and intuition for people. they just boiled the whole cast down too much, and i get that it's for brevity but the fact that this is a lot of people's introductions to the characters, i think it's a huge fumble and disservice to one piece.
