Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hey everyone! I'm putting out this unedited reaction ahead of the early access to the edited one because 1) I'm still editing it 😅 and 2) I feel bad about how long it's taking to get out this reaction. Let me know what you think in the comments below! [Direct link here.]

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

There are a lot of fan service things to love about this film. Fun and exciting stuff. Two, but not all of my biggest issues with this one, are the writing of various characters and the portrayal of the Jedi and the Republic. This will be both my imposed expectations not being met, and thus not the films fault. But also the glaring missed opportunities to delve even slightly into the psychology behind these maddening character choices. The portrayal of Padmé is beyond frustrating to watch. She began as a strong and narratively significant protagonist, and then part of that was somewhat eroded for yet another narrative device for Anakin's downfall. Their relationship journey lacks integrity. Padmé's response to hearing the the murdering of the innocent is abruptly resolved with zero struggle or condemnation. Once a leader of her people and still strong political representative. By the very absence of any inner turmoil, we are forced to reconcile away this way of thinking, in a monent, that is so swiftly skipped over. Something that is as baffling as those who write to certain prison inmates because they see and love the man behind the monster. What an opportunity missed to have created and explained a relationship at the heart of a person coming to grips with their powers of mental influence. Whether that be conscious or subconscious. Padmé's feelings for Anakin are his projection, coupled with his need for power and control. This would at least be more understandable for those not prepared to accept and understand this toxic relationship, minis any explicit force influence. One device that helps Anakin down the path. The death of his mother. Ten years later and Shmi hasn't been freed by the Republic. Why does no one care? I understand that attachments are forbidden. But does this explain why there couldn't have been a mission to go back and free her and find her a new home. Particularly now circumstances are less time sensitive than they were at their departure. They aren't above using a genetically engineered subservient army to smash the separatists. So slavery is basically OK. More reductive storytelling and the term 'women in refrigerators' comes to mind. As Harrison once said to Hamill, "This ain't that kind of movie kid!" 🤣

Perfect! Glad it did. I'll be doing that moving forward on all Patreon-only videos.

Just watched it, really enjoyed it and the blurred movie in the corner helped a lot.

Makes sense about the romance. The battles were really good in this movie! Yes, Christopher Lee was SO wonderful. The edited version was just posted and you're at the tier that has access so you can go check that out and see my full thoughts at the end. 😊

I think overall the romance is meant to be seen as moving too quickly and not well developed. The way it wraps up in the next movie will show why I still think the romance in this movie was well done, even if some of the dialogue is a bit…Shakespearean lol. The best part of the movie by far is the end battle. I always enjoy rewatching the coliseum scene and noticing how quick Padmé starts getting her chains off. Also love Count Dooku of course. Sir Christopher Lee is a treasure and I’m so happy he got to be apart of this universe. Can’t wait to hear your full thoughts!

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm having a lot of fun editing those moments. ☺️👀

This was awesome, thank you! Everything from your Boba epiphany, to Dooku being a "good guy", was entertaining. Can't wait to watch the next one! Thank you for all your hard work on this.
