Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hey everyone! Here is the uncut reaction to The Last Jedi. My edited reaction for this one will, unfortunately, not premiere until Sunday at the earliest. My thoughts and review portion at the end of the reaction, combined with my intro, is a whole 24 minutes long. 😂 This means I have to take a 2.5 hour film runtime and chop it down to 35 minutes (I don't ever want a reaction video being longer than one hour, or split into two parts - a personal preference as a creator). I know it's doable, but it's taking some time to edit as I have to be a lot more picky and choosy with what I keep and what I scrap.

I have a LOT of thoughts about this movie. There were many things I loved and enjoyed about it, and many things I thought were big flaws and have constructive criticisms about. While I touch on some of them in this uncut reaction, I honestly held a lot of my thoughts until the movie was over where I could get all of the things I wanted to say written down on a notepad and organized. I do that at the end of every movie so that it makes recording the "thoughts & review" part of my reaction videos much easier for me as I can get things out coherently. 😂 So if you are going to watch this uncut version, I would STRONGLY recommend checking out the last 22 minutes of the edited reaction.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

I, personally, was really frustrated with episode VIII - TLJ, but looking back, if it wasn't for this bump in the road I feel Star Wars wouldn't rise back up with great shows like The Mandalorian.

Mayra Geek

FWIW, he also publicly stated that he loved the movie and that he regretted airing his *initial* (pre-filming) criticisms because he didn't like how people were taking his comments and blowing them out of proportion. No matter what you think of that correction, I do think it's worth considering that Hamill's official public stance is that he doesn't want people using him as a reason to complain about the movie, and I think that's worth respecting whether one likes the movie or not.

😆!! It's my first time watching since December 2017! It's for research purposes!😆

Mayra Geek

Mark Hamill publicly disagreed with the direction Luke Skywalker was written. Later, after episode 9, it was revealed the sequels wasn't written as a cohesive arc, it was pretty obvious by then. I, personally, was really frustrated with episode VIII - TLJ, but looking back, if it wasn't for this bump in the road I feel Star Wars wouldn't rise back up with great shows like The Mandalorian.

Mayra Geek

Great timing! I just shared early access to the edited version now. 😊 Also thank you for the kind comments!

Just finishing this now, but great job as always. I could name off several things that I wish had been done better, but I enjoy this one more than most. Action scenes were great, Snoke's throne room was awesome, and I liked the action/chase sequence on Canto Bight. There are some things that I think could have been better (the Canto Bight quest itself, some of Luke's presentation), but the positives outweigh the negatives - at least for me. I might have more to add after watching the edited version with comments. Thanks again; I know this is a huge investment of your time and effort. Keep it up!

Michael S.

Thank you! Super cool.

kaiielle

Honestly though. I think people just really enjoying being negative and gate-keepy.

And with a bit of Google I found the below article that if you can find the time, or curiosity, to figure out the process I cannot recommend highly enough that you see the, as best as can be reconstructed from the HEAVILY HEAVILY edited later versions, the "first" 3 Episodes of the Skywalker Saga as we "old farts" first saw them to truly appreciate what George Lucas was able to create with "primitive" technology. https://lifehacker.com/watch-the-original-star-wars-trilogy-as-it-was-before-g-1747927284

David W Richards

And as for the "fans" who hate these three movies, and this one in particular, so much ... IT'S JUST AN F'ING MOVIE. There should ONLY EVER be TWO THINGS in your life that bring out that kind of emotion in you ... your FAMILY ... and picking up a GD gun to pick off the soldiers of an invading army one by one. NOTHING else in the entirety of ANY Galaxy, even one "A Long Time Ago" and "Far Far Away", should mean that much to you.

David W Richards

I've seen complaints about the Porgs and the crystal foxes and how they were just introduced to make merchandise for Star Wars, and it's like bruh where have y'all been? Of course, they focus on introducing things that can make them money in other areas. Star Wars is the successful franchise it is largely because of merchandise sales. 😅 I also liked the Porgs. They were very cute.

kaiielle

And I liked the Porgs and the scene when chewy wouldn’t eat one

Absher

Definitely agree about the Leia message!

Absher

R2 showing Leia's message for Obi-Wan from A New Hope was definitely the way nostalgia should be done in this universe. It was a great moment and scene. I had criticisms about Luke in this movie, but not a complete criticism. I actually wouldn't have minded at all how he was in this movie if it had been done right. I go into more details about that in the edited reaction though, so I'll save it for then. 😊 I still hope you enjoyed the reaction.

kaiielle

The end with Luke was something I didn't see coming at all, and I completely missed the obvious cues.

kaiielle

Dust off the shoulder indeed.

kaiielle

Crait Battle visuals were A++.

kaiielle

Such a great scene.

kaiielle

Enjoyed this comment a lot, thank you!

kaiielle

Well there aren’t many highlights for me in this movie but in the spirit of keeping it positive, here it goes… Luke and R2 are reunited if only for a brief moment, seeing the original Jedi texts was a cool idea, Hans dice were a nice surprise. The force sensitive kid at the end was cute. I will say just one negative thing because I just can’t give it a pass. The washed up portrayal of Luke is too much for me to overlook and is the short version of why I dislike this movie so much. I could go on and on about all the problems in this movie but it’s pointless and in the past for me. I let it go and now I look forward to all the new content coming. I feel like Star Wars is in a good place with Dave Filoni at the helm.

Absher

Lot's of Star Wars "fans" HATE HATE HATE this movie but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie because if you're the "Last" Jedi Knight there is and maybe ever will be, going out the way Luke Skywalker went is THE F'ING MOST EPIC WAY any Jedi has EVER become "One with the Force". By the time Luke Skywalker was done with Kylo Ren he had been reduced back down to just plain pitiful Ben Solo with Daddy issues and I was LMAO 🤣 🤣🤣 That has long ago become my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Star Wars scene of ALL TIME.

David W Richards

I’ll watch in full after work, but I long ago adapted Luke’s response to a lot of the negative feedback on the movie - just dust off the shoulder. I’m quite comfortable with enjoying the movie - Casino World detour aside - and as long as it makes me happy as a fan, that’s the most important thing. Everyone has their opinions though and I look forward to considering other sides.

Matthew Periolat

Visually, some of the best Star Wars out there, and a few interesting elements not explored elsewhere in the franchise, but that's about where the compliments end for me.

Michlale

Like lots of people, I have mixed feelings about this movie but I respect the hell out of it. That and Luke seeing the twin suns for the last time never fails to make me completely break down crying.

juliachristine

Still wish we got more development with the First Order along with a deeper backstory of Kylo. Alot of this was explained in books which released later but overall this film grew on me the more I watched it. Alot of the backlash you may of heard relates to how Luke was handled many people including Mark himself were surprised with how much Luke changed going as far as saying he's a whole different character referring to him as "Jake" Skywalker. The only problem i have with the pacing of the film is the whole Cantonica, Canto Bight casino city story arc could've been removed and it wouldn't of changed much. Felt like a random side quest which is fine for a TV show a little filler adventure but for a movie it's very random lol I also wasn't a big fan of those bombers (9MG-100 StarFortress SF-17) they could've used Y Wing's would've been far more affective with a few squadrons of Y Wing bombers outfitted with Proton torpedoes than these massive WW2 inspired Boomers which explode wiping out more of their own ships than Tie Fighters. Maybe bring back the B Wing's which showed up in Return of the Jedi just felt like a massive downgrade in quality for the Rebels/Resistance to use these large bombers than a simple Y Wing. You also have the BTL-S8 K-wing assault starfighter also known as just K Wing a really cool Expanded universe Bomber used by the New Republic. It's like a mix of a Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II combined with ball turrets from a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress would've been the perfect time to introduce this into Canon. The large walkers you see are known as the The First Order All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) of course being based on the Imperial AT-AT which itself was based on the The All Terrain Tactical Enforcer (AT-TE) used by the Republic in the Clone Wars and used by the Empire in the early days of the Empire until being replaced by the AT-AT. I liked what they were going for George of course was inspired by WW2 dogfights when creating Star Wars but man was it an awfully designed ship lol I also wish the First Order fleet actually did something you know jump ahead of the Rebel fleet instead of creating a line of Star Destroyers. This was very much inspired by the Hunt for Red October but it didn't work as well for me than for others. The First Order is just so incompetent from their leadership to the battle formations nothing about them give off Fear like the Empire or even the CIS and their droid armies. The biggest problem for me is the timespan the Sequels just seem much smaller conflict than the Clone Wars or the Civil War as these first two films (Force Awakens and Last Jedi) take place right after each other while with the og movies we saw time jumps of a few years while with the Prequals we jumped a whole decade pretty much into Attack of the Clone and then a few years into Revenge of the Sith showing us the end of the Clone Wars. With the Sequels we don't really get this lacking alot of the world building something i find the weakest in these movies if you don't count the books and shows which do expand the lore of the early years of the New Republic and the First Order. But I'm glad you enjoyed it really interested to hear your thoughts on Rise of Skywalker recommend looking up nothing not even the poster. It's my least favourite but I'll not mention why, maybe you'll enjoy it. Overall i don't think The Last Jedi is a bad movie tried alot of new things some hit and other missed you can't make everyone happy but I'm happy you liked parts of the movie.

Isaac

He sure as hell loves the color red

Anakin Starkiller

Snoke's red room is my favourite room in the entire Star Wars franchise so far. ☺️

kaiielle

This movie still a head scratcher but I have to admit the Dreadnought and the Supremacy and that fight in Snokes throne room was pretty bad ass.

Anakin Starkiller

Put it on 1.5x speed so it doesn't take as long. 🤣

kaiielle

I can’t believe I’m about to put this movie on and watch it with you. Haha, here goes nothing
