The Clone Wars: The Malevolence Trilogy [007-009/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! I'm excited to share my first time watching and reacting to the Malevolence Trilogy! I have been trying for the past two months to switch editing programs. I use Filmora for everything, but it's quite limited and I'd like to move on to something better. I have tried DaVinci Resolve, with issues. I tried Adobe Premiere Pro, with issues. This week I decided to give Sony Vegas Pro a try, and while I learned it quick and loved using it, the rendering time was UNBELIEVABLE. The program really wanted to take a whole ass 33 hours to export this video (that is only 73 minutes long).

Anyway, please cross your fingers that something can work better for me soon.

Today, we are watching The Malevolence Trilogy in The Clone Wars. This arc consists of the following episodes:

Let me know your thoughts on this arc in the comments below. [Direct link here.]

The Clone Wars: The Malevolence Trilogy [007-009/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hey, Kaiielle! The Malevolence trilogy is based on the World War II hunt for the Nazi dreadnought 'Bismarck'. A supposedly unsinkable behemoth, it sunk the HMS Hood with a single salvo in a matter of minutes taking all but 3 of its 1400-member crew! That's what happens to Plo's command in "Rising" leaving just him, Wollfe and two clones alive in the pod. A squadron of British Swordfish bi-planes took off from an aircraft carrier and flew over 100 miles through a treacherous North Atlantic squall to retaliate against the 'Bismarck'. They dropped every torpedo they had but only one struck its target! That made all the difference, though, because the 'Bismarck' couldn't make full-speed to port in occupied France as a result and was hounded at sea by a flotilla of British warships that crippled the 'Bismarck' with an incessant barrage. The Y-wing squadron's journey through the neebray-infested nebula and their run against the 'Malevolence' led by Anakin in "Shadow" reflects the Swordfish squadron's experience. The trio of pursuing Republic cruisers battering the 'Malevolence' in "Destroy" reflects the dogged chase of the 'Bismarck' to its doom. Space is often conceived of in nautical terms as the "Sea of Space" and all these starships are designed like naval vessels. Aircraft carriers, battleships and destroyers all have bridges at the highest points of their ships. RISING MALEVOLENCE: Kel Dor Master Plo Koon appeared in the Prequel trilogy. The "Not to me." line you liked is from this episode. Plo Koon, my favorite supporting Jedi, is voiced by the same guy who voices Kenobi, James Arnold Taylor. The deep bond between Ahsoka and Plo Koon is revealed. The introduction of Commander Wollfe. He's the unarmored clone in the pod and is the clone associated with Plo just like Cody is associated with Kenobi and Rex is associated with Anakin. The Separatist secret weapon is an ion cannon which disrupts electrical systems like an EMP. We've seen the Rebels use this weapon on Hoth to target Star Destroyers as they evacuated the base in "Empire Strikes Back". I like how "Rising Malevolence" makes the normally clownish droids seem cruel and threatening as they mercilessly rupture the lifepods. We get to see Anakin's personal starship, the jalopy from Teth dubbed the 'Twilight', in action again. SHADOW OF MALEVOLENCE: Ahsoka didn't get much credit but she schooled her Master in "Shadow", the first lesson of many. The introduction of Kaminoan physician Nala Se. She took a heroic stance to remain by her patients. The comment Ahsoka makes about Anakin not liking her flying is in reference to an episode that was produced earlier but is set later in the chronology. This is one of the minor discrepancies with the chronological order that fans have caught but Disney missed. When you get to the episode, I'll bring it up. DESTROY MALEVOLENCE: Palpatine must love constantly tipping off Dooku about Republic activities only to watch his own 'team' scramble to plug the leak like headless chickens. In this episode, he actually sets Padme up! I like how the 'Malevolence' is so massive that it requires a high-speed railway system built into its structure to transport crew and components along its length! This is the first time we see secret husband and wife, Padme and Anakin, operate as a team in the show and they even get a little flirtatious with each other on the railway. Since Grievous and Anakin's first face-to-face confrontation is in "Revenge of the Sith", the producers take great pains to ensure the two Generals never meet in the series except for a couple of starfighter skirmishes and one brief exchange. The 'Twilight' from Teth is back in action for Padme's rescue. Anthony Daniels always provides the voice of C-3PO.

Thanks for this comment! And so happy a couple people have noticed the Jinjer shirt. I love them!

As you pointed out, the bridge placement on the Malevolence makes absolutely no sense apart from giving the ship a unique design (on Count Dooku's ship in Episode 3, the bridge is located in the nose of the ship while the extended structure where Palpatine was being "held" looked like it was more of an observation deck or ceremonial deck). But also the republic (later imperial) ships has this element in their bridges, although they are within a more massive superstructure that at least should provide a little more protection. First of all, in space you would rely entirely on sesors to get your situational awareness, so having a lot of view from the bridge does not add to that in any meaningful way. This is even proven by the fact that the battle droids report on what they see on their screens. Second, considering the size of the ship and the massive distances of space, Visually seeing another ship (especially enemy) against the backdrop of stars would mean that it is already too close to you. But then again, in entertainment it's usually form over function to make it look cool. Often times designing space ships with elements that relate to naval ships. However in reality it would then have been more realistic to design them with elements relating to submarines. The only place where IMHO this have been done right, is in the 2004 adaptation of the show "Battlestar Gallactica". BTW... That Jinjer shirt... 🥰🥰🥰

Y-Wing is my favorite ship! Particularly the Clone Wars era style. 🌸😃

Fun detail you may noticed that the Clones are flying Y-Wings which were first shown in A New Hope flown by Gold Squadron, Gold Squadron also showed up in Rogue One. You may notice that the Republic Era Y-Wing's are much more heavily-armored and feature two-seats one for the pilot and gunner. When the Rebels got their hands on Y-Wings they pretty much removed most of the outer panels to make the aircraft lighter pretty much exposing the whole backside of the Y-Wing. They also removed the 2nd seat and replaced it with an auto turret.

Master Plo Koon is definitely a fan favorite of many Star Wars fans and his “Not to me” line is 1 really big reason, and him bringing Ahsoka to the temple! And as far as I know Anthony Daniels is the ONLY official voice of C-3PO, like he always voices him from the movies, TV, Games, Lego Shorts, Robot Chicken 😂. Great Reaction btw!

Justin

I like having him on the desk!

You’re not happy this has posted?

Hey! Nice BB-8 mug!

Absher

I'll def keep that in mind.

"She [Padme] seems to know her way around [Anakin's ship]." — Kenobi Which reminds me, once you're done with TCW (not before, because major spoilers), search for "Obi-Wan Kenobi - Master of Trolling" on YT. You'd appreciate it.

Plo Koon my beloved

I’m not happy this has posted. I’m thrilled. I’m elated. Look forward to enjoying and I thank you for a gift to launch a weekend right. As you no doubt know by now, yes, it’s Anthony Daniels voicing Threepio. I’d really be hard pressed to think of any occasion Daniels doesn’t voice Goldenrod. The Malevolence arc is based on the real events around the hunt for and eventual sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. If you are interested, recommend the movie Sink the Bismarck! for a decent adaptation of history. Can’t wait for Rookies and the Droid duology! Good times ahead! And you are so right - no clone is expendable. I’m interested to see who your favorites will be before the series is done.

Maybe one day I will learn to not accidentally publish this to ALL tiers first. But today is not that day.
