The Clone Wars: Ryloth Trilogy [023-025/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! It's time for another Clone Wars arc! This is the final major arc of Season 1! There is still one more S1 episode to get to, but it's part of an arc that's all the way ahead in Season 3. This arc is easily my favourite so far in the show, and contains my favourite episode to date. Have fun seeing which one!

This reaction video consists of the following episodes:

The Clone Wars: Ryloth Trilogy [023-025/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hey, Kaiielle! STORM OVER RYLOTH: Techno Union Emir Wat Tambor was seen as one of the Separatist conspirators in "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith". His species is Skakoan from Skako Minor. Never worry for Admiral Wullf Yularen! He is seen in "A New Hope" during the briefing where Vader chokes the officer who scoffs at the Force. He wears the white uniform of the intelligence service, the Imperial Security Bureau. It's a shame since he was such a competent and supportive commander. The relationship between Anakin and Ahsoka advances in this key episode that was specifically designed by Dave Filoni as a maturation experience. She's shaken by her costly blunder but he makes her understand that it wasn't entirely her fault and he forces her back into the saddle quickly with even more responsibility to boost her confidence. It's not an approach that would suit every pupil but it's perfect for an improviser like Ahsoka. I love how Republic cruisers are used as weapons in this episode. Anakin uses a cruiser offensively while Ahsoka uses a cruiser defensively. This episode continues the Ryloth storyline begun in "Supply Lines" (Season 3, Episode 3) which introduced the Twi'lek freedom fighter, CHAM SYNDULLA, and the doomed Nikto Master, Ima-Gun Di. I prefer placing the Toydaria Duology right before the Ryloth Trilogy to keep the Twi'lek narrative together which makes more sense than the official Lucasfilm chronology. INNOCENTS OF RYLOTH The introduction of Numa, the little green Twi'lek girl. The introduction of the clone duo Waxer and Boil. Obi-Wan taming the pack of slavering beasts using the Force much to the awe of the troops is very cool but also a reminder that the esteem in which the Generals are held is not enough to stay the clones' hands during Order 66. LIBERTY ON RYLOTH: You've met the resistance leader CHAM SYNDULLA and his second, GOBI GLIE, way back in "Supply Lines" (Season 3, Episode 3) when he was collaborating with the doomed Nikto Master Ima-Gun Di. The massacre site with the headstones marks the place where the Jedi and clones gave their lives to cover the Twi'leks' escape. This entire arc is a continuation of the Ryloth storyline begun in that episode which is why I place the Toydaria Duology right before the Ryloth Trilogy in my own chronology. The obese Twi'lek, Senator ORN FREE TAA, is notorious for his greed and gluttony but makes a good showing in this episode and in the connected "Supply Lines" (Season 3, Episode 3). He appeared in live-action in all three Prequel films. The compromise CHAM makes with SENATOR TAA for a temporary REPUBLIC OCCUPATION will naturally be affected by the Republic's transition into an Empire in "Revenge of the Sith". "The Bad Batch" series revisits the Ryloth situation. The mounts the Twi'leks ride are called Blurrgs. They've been seen in live-action in "The Mandalorian". Mace Windu is absolutely unstoppable in this episode! His death-defying leap at the bridge and his storming of the gates show how astonishingly powerful he is. In the non-canon 2003 micro-series, he actually pummels destroyer droids to bits with rapid-fire fists! Lol. The more skilled droids with the vibro-blades who tangled with the clones in the plasma bridge control room are COMMANDO DROIDS. You first saw them take out the Rishi outpost in "Rookies" (Season 1, Episode 5) where three members of Domino Squad were killed! Anakin and Ahsoka make welcome cameos at the end. The closing parade does feel like the celebratory end of a Star Wars movie and ends Season 1 on a high note. However, this trilogy could not have made a cohesive film as it was episodic with three different protagonists. The animated movie was about introducing Ahsoka as Anakin's Padawan and their first adventure together.

LMAO you're welcome. 😂

kaiielle

😆Male Edna Mode! I can't unsee it now.

Mayra Geek

Yeah tailhead is not good at ALL. And yes it absolutely will.

kaiielle

Love Ryloth! And I don’t like that Boil kept saying Tailhead, it is kinda Racist to be honest, which is bad of course, but I am glad to see Boil have that flaw and seemingly grow past it when he actually meets a Twi’lek. It’s nothing new to SW either, Liea calls Chewbacca “a walking carpet” in a New Hope. I am really glad that you are growing to love the clones more! It’s gonna Make Revenge of the Sith HURT even more 😢.

Justin

Great point about Ahsoka! Def a great episode for her.

kaiielle

This is such a great trilogy and as you said, with a little longer running time it could absolutely have the potential for a full movie. I also like the middle episode the most. That kid is just so adorable and brave The first episode I think is important with regards to Ahsoka's development as a padawan. Her first command and first defeat. Learning about the responsibilities of command and the cost of being too focused on the objective, when you have to consider the broader situation to prevent unnecessary losses.

Rune

Oh that's a great detail!

I've been a Star Wars fan for many years now. But something I literally just noticed is so cool.... in the third episode of the ark when you see the (Twileks) loading Wot Tambor's ship, you can briefly see them loading The Ark of the Covenant (or Ryloth Ark for SW purposes) into the starship. Myself being a religious individual found that an incredible detail.

Please be mindful of expectation spoilers. I don't like to be told if people will show up again in the future. I like to be surprised when they do!

kaiielle

Ryloth is a pretty important planet in Star Wars animated shows, so you'll be seeing it and some of the characters again, some multiple times. I know you like your clones and a lot of them don't show up again, but Waxer and Boil will pop up again.

And here it is, the point where the show is starting to find its footing and the quality become very consistent going forward. There is a few exceptions, but overall you are going to have a blast watching it. I have a strong opinion about what show you should jump to after this one but it is not the time to talk about that. Cheers !
