The Clone Wars: Bounty Hunters + The Zillo Beast Duology [029-031/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hey, Kaiielle! By the time I got to "Clone Wars", fans had parsed the official chronology for all of its errors creating multiple alternate chronologies. Every time I come across a discrepancy, I provide the rationale so that you understand why the misplacement was noticed. The errors are largely minor and the result of Lucasfilm not being as thorough as the fans. However, the official order did iron out some glaring anachronisms making the viewing of the series more cohesive rather than scattershot. The reason for the disorder in the first place was that Lucas would come up with ideas that he wanted implemented on a whim and he ordered Filoni to work in an episode regardless of what they were doing at the time. So, the official order is a big help but the fan orders are the result of eagle eyes and memorized dialogue. The ancillary material like the web comic, the comic book, the novel and the animatic story reels late in the series are what you really need to concern yourself with not missing out on because they reveal critical plot points. When the series was cancelled, the unfinished stories were converted into that alternate media and are canonical. A lot of viewers pass them up but I recommend you seek them out. You have plenty of time before you get there, though.

So if the official order is still a discrepancy, why did they order them this way? Cause the actual season order is obviously wrong too. Honestly, I'm not super nit picky about it. Thanks for your comments!

Hey, Kaiielle! THE ZILLO BEAST STRIKES BACK: Rex's comment that most of Anakin's plans involve falling is a direct reference to another episode earlier in the season meaning the Zillo Beast Duology was placed this early in the chronology in error. It should come after the episode being referenced and shouldn't have been relocated from its original placement at all. Therefore, this is yet another discrepancy one must wrap their head around when following the Lucasfilm order. Coruscant is a completely urbanized world from surface to core. There are citizens dwelling in its depths who live their entire lives without seeing stars and sky! The population is in the trillions! It is based on Isaac Asimov's galactic capital world of Trantor from the "Foundation" novels. It's fascinating and tragic that the Zillo Beast instinctively senses Palpatine's all wrong while all the Jedi with their refined senses remain clueless. Palpatine is foiled to the point of irritation a few times over the course of the series but this is the ONLY episode in which he genuinely knows FEAR! Senators Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and Orn Free Taa make cameo appearances. Twi'lek Master Aayla Secura gets in on the action! Palpatine getting an airlift from R2-D2 would be something I'd pay to see in live-action! It's interesting to see both Mace and Yoda actively trying to save Palpatine's life when both will attempt to kill him later. The fate of the Zillo Beast cloning project would be an intriguing plot thread to explore further. Anthony Daniels, as always, voices C-3PO. Rex is in almost in every episode where Anakin or Ahsoka are the leads. The clone associated with each Jedi General is featured in the episodes where they are prominent. The clones are color-coded for ease of identification. Rex is the easiest to spot as the hero clone of the series. REX: BLUE piping, inverted 'V's on helmet, range finder on helmet, pauldron on shoulder, tally marks for kills on vambraces, skirt, SHAVED HEAD, Anakin Skywalker CODY: ORANGE piping, shoulder antenna, 'C'-SHAPED SCAR ON RIGHT TEMPLE, Obi-Wan Kenobi BLY: YELLOW piping, hinged head scope, SCAR ABOVE LEFT EYEBROW, Aayla Secura WOLFFE: GRAY piping, wolfshead paint job on helmet and shoulders, DEAD RIGHT EYE, Plo Koon GREE: GREEN piping, RED DOUBLE MOHAWK, Luminara Unduli FIVES: BLUE piping, blue semi-circle on helmet, '5' TATTOO ON RIGHT TEMPLE, GOATEE ECHO: BLUE piping, blue handprint on breastplate BOIL: ORANGE piping, HANDLEBAR MUSTACHE WAXER: ORANGE piping, SHAVED HEAD, SOUL PATCH

Hey, Kaiielle! BOUNTY HUNTERS: As mentioned in "Holocron Heist" (Season 3, Episode 1), this episode is MISPLACED in the official chronology. It's supposed to come before Episode 1 because they've just now learned of the Separatist presence on Felucia only to lose the planet to the Separatists in the first episode of the season. Just another discrepancy to wrap your brain around when following the Lucasfilm order. Felucia was a planet that appeared regularly in Dark Horse comics but its existence probably goes back farther than that to novels and the original Marvel comics run in the 1980s. Nowadays, it's a staple Star Wars world one associates with the franchise. The lumbering behemoths were rancors like the beast Luke fought in Jabba's palace in "Return of the Jedi". The crafty HONDO OHNAKA returns! You last saw him try to ransom Anakin, Obi-Wan and Dooku in Season 1. The introduction of honorable Zabrak bounty huntress SUGI and her small, armored Ssori partner, SERIPAS. The introduction of lethal Kyuzo bounty hunter EMBO who is voiced by Dave Filoni himself! The episode is dedicated to famed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa because the plot was an adaptation of the 1954 Japanese classic "The Seven Samurai" which was later remade twice as the American Western "The Magnificent Seven" by John Sturges in 1960 with Yul Brynner and by Antoine Fuqua in 2016 with Denzel Washington! Kurosawa is a favorite of Lucas and Dave Filoni must love the film because he adapted a live-action version of the story for an episode of "The Mandalorian"! THE ZILLO BEAST: Dave Filoni pays tribute to Godzilla movies with this arc. I always find episodes where Anakin and Mace are allied to be intriguing because of how violently their relationship ends. Malastare is the homeworld of the Dugs who are the same species as the cheating pod-racer Sebulba from "Phantom Menace". Their Doge, Urus, is just as unpleasant. The only two things in the Star Wars galaxy that are impervious to lightsaber strikes are beskar steel and Zillo Beast scales.

I also support whoever told you the quality gets better as we progress. Seasons 5 & 7 being my favorites with arc and animation quality

Wow, cool, totally forgot about The Zillo beast arc. It’s eyes reminded me Toothless from How to Train your Dragon. That was fun! Thanks again for sharing your reaction and thoughts

Absher

Thank you!

It is really sad that the Zilo beast died, but I DO LOVE how Palpatine was genuinely scared, we almost NEVER see him scared for his life. And Palpatine could have gotten out of there on his own, but he wouldn’t blown his Cover as Sidious. All the Imagery of the Zilo Beast’s Eye 👁 focusing in on Palpatine was great. And Rex was in Both Zilo Beast Episodes. If it helps he is the Clone with Blue paint on his Armor, and he has an Antenna (Range Finder) on his helmet and he wears a Skirt (Coma)

Justin

So your favorite planet Felucia is is in this episode, and the one where Ahsoka is disobeying and gets Library duty as a punishment(Cad Bane’s intro). The Zilo Beast Planet is Malastare, not the Desert 🏜 from attack of the clones, that is Geonosis. Also I LOVE SEEING HONDO AGAIN!!! And isn’t Obi Wan just such a flirt! Flirting with Ventress and now Sugi😂.

*apparently*, the population of Coruscant is about 3,000,000,000,000 people, that is, 3 trillion. That's a lot.

BratPfanneTV

Ahh perfect, thank you!

kaiielle

Another happy landing. Regarding your comment on Felucia in EP3. All planets in the movie had several canonical details created about them in prep for their use in the movie, as they did not yet know what planets would be used most. Even if they were eventually religated to 1 sceen. Clone Wars simply used it as a location.

Sugi the bounty hunter group leader is a Zabrak born on their home planet Iridonia, Same species as Darth Maul only Maul was born on a different planet. Embo the bounty hunter with the massive shield hat is a Kyuzo from the planet Phatrong. This episode was the first introduction of Kyuzo species and Embo himself is voiced by Dave Filoni. Rumi Paramita the tall slender looking alien is a Frenk a species also introduced in "Bounty Hunters". Seripas the tiny lad in the suit of armour is a Ssori a species yet again introduced in Bounty Hunters. The Zillo Beast Arc is pretty much a Godzilla episode in the Star Wars universe which is pretty awesome. This is why I prefer TV shows over movies as the creators are able to try new ideas and focus on different characters without the fear of moving away from the main plot kind of like Last Jedi and how the Casino side mission felt very out of place but would've made for a good one off episode in a Star Wars show. Great that you're deep into Season 2 as it's a slight improvement over Season 1 in terms of animation quality and storytelling but I do recall some Season 1 episodes are left to cover like Season 1 Ep22 that's located dead in the middle of a bunch of Season 3 episodes. Season 3 is a massive improvement over Season 1 and 2 so you'll experience a slight downgrade in animation quality but it should be fine. Always a shock on the eyes when you've been watching Season 3 episodes back to back and then out of nowhere you're back to episode 1 with dated graphics.
