The Clone Wars: The Ziro Trilogy [051-053/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Thank you as always!

Yes, I will be watching Bad Batch and Rebels, along with Andor, Mando and Boba. I am most likely going to watch them in chronological order based on the overall Star Wars universe timeline, which means watching them in that order I just listed. This will work out as Andor will release likely when I'm still on Clone Wars, or perhaps just finished it.

Yeah this is definitely the turning point for clone wars in terms of quality, it gets amazing from here on out (with a few duds here and there of course in my opinion) but this series gets absolutely phenomenal near the last few seasons, im SO excited to see your reactions to them! Also, question (: Will you be watching rebels (the sequel series to clone wars) by any chance? I know you talked about mandalorian and book of boba but rebels is very important in terms of lore but It’s also just really, REALLY good lol, and ties into the mandalorian and rouge one very nicely. It’s also a huge tear jerker but no spoilers of course! It takes place after clone wars but before rouge one so chronologically it makes more sense to watch rebels before mando (: Great reaction as always Kaiielle!

Hey, Kaiielle! EVIL PLANS: This is a droid-centric episode with a Hutt sidebar. There's a cute Anakin and Padme domestic scene as Padme frets over a dinner party and Anakin caresses her cheek. The return of Duro bounty hunter CAD BANE last seen in the Holocron Trilogy of Season 2! Apparently, Bane got a new Todo after he destroyed his last companion as a distraction. TODO is again voiced by Seth Green of Scott Evil fame from "Austin Powers". That fruit vendor royally swindles the droids! I love how Artoo gets pampered by a spa treatment while Threepio is brutally tortured! Lol. It's quite touching that Artoo sacrifices his safety upon hearing what fate is in store for Threepio if he can't provide the info Artoo knows he doesn't possess. As always, Anthony Daniels voices C-3PO. The introduction of the Hutt Council and the Five Family Heads! Besides JABBA, there's: -- GORGA with the monocle -- MARLO with the raspy voice and pencil-thin moustache modeled on Marlon Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone -- AROK with the stogie modeled on 1930's gangster actor Edward G. Robinson -- ORUBA the albino with the capelet and beret In attendance at the party for Roonan Senator AANG are Senators: -- BAIL ORGANA of Alderaan -- MON MOTHMA of Chandrila -- KIN ROBB of Taris (black female with conical turban) -- STONK of Ithor (Hammerhead) -- DANTUM ROOHD (white male with square mitre hat) HOSTAGE CRISIS: This was Anakin's "Die Hard" episode! We get a glimpse of some Anakin-Padme intimacy in this episode and a near-public revelation of their relationship! You've gotta wonder if Bail Organa figured out what was going on because why else would Padme be carrying around a lightsaber? Padme's use of the lightsaber to cut Anakin's bonds is the only time we see her use such a weapon in the franchise. If seen in release order, this would have been Cad Bane's debut rather than Season 2's Holocron Trilogy. Aurra Sing had recently been incarcerated after her assassination attempt on Padme in "Assassin", the prelude to this arc. Dave Filoni has explained Aurra Sing's presence on the team as the result of Bane springing her from lock-up as prep for this operation. Aurra Sing was again voiced by Jamie King of "Sin City" and "Black Summer". The Weequay, named Shahan Alama in the credits, is just a bounty hunter unaffiliated with Hondo's group on Florrum. Hondo wears a turtle-like shell as a helmet and goggles so he's easily distinguished. Palpatine was genuinely distressed by the Senate lockdown as this was a Hutt scheme he wasn't involved in but the deaths of nettlesome Senators like Bail and Padme would have suited his interests perfectly. Some familiar Senators were affected by this situation including: -- PADME AMIDALA of Naboo -- BAIL ORGANA of Alderaan -- ORN FREE TAA of Ryloth (the corpulent Twi'lek) -- ONOCANDA FARR of Rodia (Uncle Ono) -- RIYO CHUCHI of Pantora (blue-skinned female) -- KIN ROBB of Taris (black female with conical turban) -- STONK of Ithor (the Hammerhead) -- DANTUM ROOHD (white male with square mitre hat) -- ZINN PAULNESS (white bearded male who has been a background extra in Senate episodes and will be speaking more in upcoming episodes) The grand return and great escape of the flamboyant and oh-so-dramatic ZIRO THE HUTT voiced by Corey Burton who also plays Bane and Dooku. Ziro's voice was modeled after real-life true-crime author Truman Capote. "Oh, the horror!" Anthony Daniels, as ever, voices C-3PO. HUNT FOR ZIRO: This episode begins as an unlikely romance and takes a dark turn into noir! This is the first chronological appearance of SY SNOOTLES who is later seen as the lead singer of Jabba's house band in "Return of the Jedi". Originally an animatronic puppet, she was rendered as a CGI creation for the Special Edition of the Classic Trilogy. "From the bottom of my fluid sac." has GOT to be the best romantic line in all of Star Wars! Lol. She manipulates the trio of Gamorrean guards so easily! Nika Futterman, who normally voices Asajj Ventress, plays femme fatale Sy Snootles by modeling her voice on Betty Boop! We are shown the swampy Hutt homeworld of Nal Hutta. I thought it was fascinating that the behemoth Mama Hutt has a symbiotic relationship with the slugs that slither across her bulk picking it clean. I love the Twi'lek dancers putting on a Vegas dance routine with elaborate Julie Taymor-inspired Hutt headdresses and Cole Porter-like lyrics! GARDULLA, a female Hutt, is hosting four of the five Heads of families including: -- GORGA with the monocle -- AROK with the stogie modeled on Edward G. Robinson -- MARLO with the moustache modeled on Vito Corleone -- ORUBA the albino with the capelet CAD BANE is back voiced again by Corey Burton who also plays Dooku and the Truman Capote-inspired Ziro. He has an incredible three-way duel against two Jedi Masters using blasters, darts, bolos, tasers, rocket boots and flamethrower. He even uses a lightsaber momentarily against Obi-Wan! TODO returns as well voiced by Seth Green of Scott Evil fame from "Austin Powers". ZIRO hid his insurance policy of blackmail secrets on TETH, the jungle world from the "Clone Wars" movie where Asajj Ventress hid Rotta the Huttlet requiring a vertical assault of the B'omarr Monastery in which she lay in wait. The introduction of Kiffar Master QUINLAN VOS. Quinlan Vos first appeared in live-action in "Phantom Menace" on Tatooine in the scene where Sebulba threatens Jar Jar. More recently, he was briefly mentioned in "Obi-Wan Kenobi" as canonically surviving Order 66. Quinlan Vos is a fan favorite Jedi from the Expanded Universe of Dark Horse Comics which are no longer canon. He is a dark-skinned, dreadlocked humanoid alien from the planet Kiffu with deep scarlet blood and yellow face tattoo. He exhibits the rare Jedi ability of PSYCHOMETRY which enables him to psychically connect to others through inanimate objects they held. The only other Jedi who we have seen with this ability was Rey in the Sequel Trilogy. In LEGENDS aka the Expanded Universe, he was Aayla Secura's Master when she was a Padawan. He is an iconoclast like Qui-Gon Jinn whose beliefs deviate from Jedi dogma. He often got sent on dangerous undercover assignments. His character was the template for Reva in "Obi-Wan Kenobi" because, in LEGENDS, he flirts with the Dark Side to achieve a noble end but gets seduced after too many compromises only to be freed when someone guides him back to the light. Unlike Reva's arc, his LEGENDS arc was compelling because you took the journey with him from the start and watched him lose his way. Many readers felt that his descent was more credible and affecting than Anakin's more petulant and selfish motives by comparison! In CANON, Quinlan exists in a somewhat diluted form. Okay, Kaiielle! You've made it! The death of Ziro is the mid-point of the series. Up until now, the Jedi have largely been victorious and the episodes have had a light touch. Filoni just murked a goofy, comedic character. Everything gets darker and deeper here on out.

Very excited!

For some reason I always associated this trilogy with the transition of quality between past and future Clone Wars episodes. I seriously don't know why but I think it's for a couple reasons my mind made up, one being that Ziro is on the earliest characters we get introduced to in the series, so him being killed off kinda felt like putting that Era away into this new path Clone Wars is going to take which leads me into the other reason, the quality. From here on out pretty much quality across the board, not just in animation, but scenery, stories, and arcs all get cranked up to 1,000. Compare it to the arcs of season 1 and 2 and they don't even stack up really. Lol but yeah this arc was arbitrarily picked out by my brain as kind of like the passing of the torch between kinda the more one-off arcs and "kid-friendly" stories of the early Clone Wars to the darker and more mature stories that have lingering effects for the rest of the series.

I love that weak episodes are still fun.

kaiielle

Super excited!

kaiielle

Neat! Thanks for clarifying. And yes the droids can definitely keep that secret forever!

kaiielle

This trilogy is fun for the wildness of it, taking full advantage of the Star Wars universe. It is on a weaker side as far as big implications but it is fun and engaging nonetheless. The Sy Snootles turn caught me off guard as well the first time. Happy you found your passport in time for your vacations, cheers !

Senate trilogy is pretty good, but nightsisters, mortis, and citadel trilogy are where this series really takes a turn into "greatness" territory. Excited for you to get to those, and then season 4 through the end of the show is mostly great, so we're getting into the meat of the show

I believe that Teth is where Ventress takes Rotta (Jabba’s son) in the Clone Wars Movie. I remember the commercials for the Season 1 finale and they were SO HYPE!!! But watching Chronologically and having to jump around some is a little weird. A weird detail is that the Droid with the Cake is actually a Medical droid dressed up like a Chef 😅. And then all the helper droids we’ve seen a lot with the Separatists so far (LEP Droids). I noticed for the first time today that When Anakin is knocked out with the Senators, Senator Chuchi was resting Anakin’s head in her legs, that was nice to give him a sorta pillo I thought. The Pirate guy with Cad Bane was not Hondo, and might not be one of Hondo’s men either, like 98% of Hondo’s crew are all Weequay (there species) but not ALL Weequay are Pirates or Hondo’s Pirates, a lot of Civilians on Tatoowein, Nal Hutta, and coruscant are Weequay, Twi’leks, Ithoreans (Brown Hammerhead guys) and Rodians (Greedo). Love seeing Palpatine almost genuinely flustered again after the Zilo Beast, Padmé and Anakin was great to see more of, I love that R2 & 3PO are the only 2 who get to see them in a Married Setting, like those 2 Droids aren’t good at keeping Secrets but they can keep THAT Secret!!! Cad is always a blast! He is My personal Favorite Bounty Hunter. Oh and last thing Zero’s Ex Girlfriend is Sy Snootles, and she is one of the Singers in Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi.
