Rain Man (1988) ✦ YouTube Edit

Good morning everyone! I'm so happy to finally provide early access to the YouTube edit for my reaction to Rain Man! I'm excited to discuss this with you all and attend the premiere, which will be on Friday, August 19 at 12:00 MDT / 18:00 UTC.

I had a lot to say about this film, as I also described what my experience and knowledge with autism is as a preface.

If you have already watched my full-length reaction, make sure you skip ahead to my thoughts and review to get a full breakdown.

Here is the direct link to this reaction.

Cheers,

Thanks for watching Daryl! I'm super pumped for Alex's Edge of Tomorrow reaction as well. I've had a number of people explain the "other side" stuff for that elevator scene and I do understand the other side of it. The more endearing, connected way of looking at it instead of immediately assuming a negative thing. Consent is a topic that I can get very fiery about, so it's why I reacted how I did and said what I did as it was the first thing that came to mind and it gets tricky when one of the parties is intellectually towering over the other. Rain Man is def an excellent film and certainly one that is super memorable.

Tonight was going to be Edge of Tomorrow alongside Alex Hefner. As I love a time saving three screen sync up, when reactions collide. But since Movies with Mary posted this top 10 fav this evening. Best made plans took an immediate swerve. All the reasons you so eloquently described, is why this is a stand out choice. Coming right after My Cousin Vinny with Jen Murray. This has been a great evening, to revist favs. Eek, the elevator scene (lift for us Brits). Everything you said was right. One particular component, that often affects judgment of these screen choices. Certainly during this time and for following decades, but not as much in more recent years, it has to be said. Very likely, if this had been a gender reversal, this would probably have never made it to screen. That doesn't effect the bad choice here, but is somewhat indicative of a mindset that can affect perception of what audiences will likely consider the more inappropriate, comparatively speaking. Every time I try to devils advocate a reasoning for the scenes inclusion. I bump up against the same troubling idea that was so perfectly displayed at various points in the film. Raymond wasn't able to fully understand the situation. So that brings me back to the same position. Just another example of how attitudes now may have evolved a little. I could sight a more recent example where the screening of that apparent bias hasn't fully dissipated. But knowing you haven't seen it, I won't. Needless to say, murky waters on some hypothetically ethical ideas. Still, majoritively, an excellent film.
