The Clone Wars: The Clovis Trilogy [114-116/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Well, this is a character I didn't think we would see again! Oh gosh, the financial scheming and politics of this one was such a ride for me. The Clovis Trilogy consists of the following episodes:

I have a feeling there are probably some of you who love this arc like I do and others that are okay without it. Would love to know your thoughts below. [Direct link here.]

The Clone Wars: The Clovis Trilogy [114-116/134] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Filling my brain with so much content in a relatively short period of time.. I'm gonna unfortunately not remember things. As you catch up, you'll see that every now and then. It's easier to remember with multiple re-watches. ☺️

10 months later... I found it little bit weird that you didn't recognize Embo the bounty hunter despite he being in so many episodes before. He has very unique looks after all.

Veli-Jussi Hirvonen

I agree with you, more of Clovis would have been awesome. He's a very interesting character.

Hey, Kaiielle! CRISIS AT THE HEART: Clovis is installed as the new head of the Bank but is quickly compromised by Dooku bringing war to neutral Scipio! The RETURN of Separatist Siniteen Senator BEC LAWISE last seen at the peace summit on Mandalore in "A Friend in Need" (Season 4, Episode 14). AMIDALA and LAWISE observe as CLU LESSER and the other Core Muuns are arrested for embezzlement and CLOVIS is appointed in their stead. DOOKU blackmails Clovis just when he's sitting on top of the world! DOOKU demands a quid pro quo: hike Republic interest rates or face exposure of colluding with Dooku to oust Lesser! CLOVIS refuses so Dooku refuses to repay the staggering Separatist loans! Between a rock and a hard place, CLOVIS has no choice but to increase Republic interest rates to induce cash flow. PADME is aghast at Clovis' treachery and the SENATE is outraged! The JEDI don't believe Clovis would be so blatantly foolish as to display such overt favoritism so soon after his installation. Even ANAKIN is skeptical. To confirm Clovis as a Separatist, DOOKU brings a fleet to Scipio to seize control of the neutral world. The INTRODUCTION of Super Tactical Droid KRAKEN. As Kraken was decapitated in "The Unknown" earlier in the season, his appearance here confirms that this trilogy was supposed to be a part of Season Five and this was to be his introduction. Respect for Commander THORN and his minigun! The DEATH of Senator BEC LAWISE! First, Dooku frames Clovis, then he frames Padme with the murder of Lawise! What a mess! The Republic has no recourse but to vote for an invasion of Scipio! I love the way DOOKU casually kicks the dead clone's head as he walks past while reporting his success to Sidious! Lol. ANAKIN and REX arrive to rescue PADME! At seeing an angry Anakin, CLOVIS panics and threatens Padme! A VULTURE DROID crashes into the base of the pinnacle toppling the office spire! The DEATH of RUSH CLOVIS! While dangling from the office's listing edge, CLOVIS shows his true worth and sacrifices himself to save the woman he loves. With Scipio in disarray, Banking Clan Senator NIX CARD turns control of the Bank to Supreme Chancellor PALPATINE. As Palpy crows victorious, you can see Chandrilan Senator MON MOTHMA fold her arms in disgust. Recognizable Senators throughout this episode include: -- MON MOTHMA of Chandrila -- RIYO CHUCHI of Pantora -- LOT DODD of the Trade Federation (Neimoidian) -- NIX CARD of the Banking Clan (Muun) -- MEENA TILLS of Mon Calamari (fish-head) -- STONK of Ithor (Hammerhead) -- MOT-NOT RAB of Tarn (bison-headed Tarnab) -- ASK AAK of Malastare (three-eyed Gran) -- KIN ROBB of Taris (black female with conical turban) -- ZINN PAULNESS (bearded human male) One of my favorite arcs in the series that demonstrates how skillfully Palpatine grows in power that is readily handed to him! I found Rush Clovis to be a multi-layered and tragic figure I wish we had gotten more of! I wish it had kept its proper place in Season Five after the Onderon Arc rather than get bumped for more kid-friendly fare but, at least, it was salvaged for The Lost Missions package that became Season Six.

Yep, super mature episode! Loved it.

Hey, Kaiielle! THE RISE OF CLOVIS: Padme and Clovis bust the banks while Anakin busts up Clovis! CLU LESSER assures the Core Five they can ride out the storm while NIX CARD attempts to ensure he will find safe port by conspiring with SIDIOUS! PALPATINE deliberately pairs off Clovis and Padme to stir Anakin up! A husband does have the prerogative to make demands of his wife just as the reverse is true. If one's spouse is willing to draw that line in the sand, one had better consider well before denying their wishes outright for the sake of the relationship! OBI-WAN's suspicions about Anakin's feelings toward Padme are confirmed in this episode. The depth of the intimacy eludes him but he probably suspects it's a mutual attraction by bringing up SATINE. ANAKIN's room not only screams of immaturity but attachment as well! He has posters and toys that have nostalgic value. Other Jedi have spartan quarters. PADME was foolish to wear such a revealing outfit in front of a guy she knows is keenly interested in her. It sends the wrong message. CLOVIS detected Anakin's obvious jealousy and had the decency to ask Padme if there was any involvement. Her DENIAL emboldened the guy to make a move! ANAKIN nearly kills Clovis! CLOVIS doesn't lash out in anger but cannily reads the situation and honorably covers up a potential scandal. Captain TYPHO has GOT to be aware of what's really going down. The danger of exposure is very real! Padme is so upset she calls for a SEPARATION! DOOKU baits a trap for Clovis and he tragically gets ensnared out of an earnest need to redeem his image. CLOVIS' ambition clouds his judgment. He should have come clean with Padme and the Senate immediately about Dooku supplying him with evidence of CLU LESSER's corrupt practices. His former ties to the Separatists would have taken him out of the running to head the Bank more than likely and cast suspicion on the evidence but he would have side-stepped Palpatine's trap! Recognizable Senators during the nomination scene include: -- BAIL ORGANA of Alderaan -- RIYO CHUCHI of Pantora -- LOT DODD of the Trade Federation (Neimoidian) -- MAK PLAIN of the Banking Clan (Muun with circlet) -- MEENA TILLS of Mon Calamari (fish-head) -- STONK of Ithor (Hammerhead) -- MOT-NOT RAB of Tarn (bison-headed Tarnab) -- ASK AAK of Malastare (three-eyed Gran) -- DANTUM ROOHD (human male with square white mitre hat) -- ZINN PAULNESS (bearded human male) PALPATINE manipulates Anakin with his avuncular sympathy brilliantly. This is one of the series' most MATURE EPISODES concerning financial irregularity, marital discord and emotional manipulation.

Hey, Kaiielle! AN OLD FRIEND: Seeking a loan from the Banking Clan for humanitarian aid, Padme discovers the Galactic Bank is running on empty! This arc was originally advertised for airing in Season 5 after the Onderon arc evidenced by IAN ABERCROMBIE's final voice performance as Palpatine before his passing. It was supplanted by the more kid-friendly Youngling and D-Squad arcs instead. SCIPIO is clearly meant to parallel SWITZERLAND for its mountains, neutrality, banking practices and clockwork motifs. The narrow-faced, tall, spindly aliens are called MUUNs. The RETURN of Banking Clan Senator NIX CARD with the havelock who was last seen on Zygerria in "Slaves of the Republic" (Season 4, Episode 12). The RETURN of Banking Clan Coruscant Representative MAK PLAIN with the circlet who was last seen in "Pursuit of Peace" (Season 3, Episode 11). The RETURN of TECKLA MINNAU, the handmaiden who inspired Padme's impassioned speech to reduce military spending in "Pursuit of Peace" (Season 3, Episode 11). The RETURN of EMBO, the deadly Kyuzo bounty hunter and his anooba, MARROK, last seen protecting the Hutts against Maul's Shadow Collective in "Eminence" (Season 5, Episode 14). EMBO is voiced by DAVE FILONI himself. The RETURN of RUSH CLOVIS, Padme's old flame from "Senate Spy" (Season 2, Episode 4). The INTRODUCTION of CLU LESSER, chief of the Banking Clan Core Five with the headdress. Rush surreptitiously approaches Padme with alarming allegations of Banking Clan misconduct and a bold plan to obtain evidence. Embo snipes at the two but misses! The DEATH of TECKLA MINNAU! She is shot by Embo after successfully sabotaging the power grid. It is important to note that Embo kills her with deadly precision yet deliberately missed every shot fired at Padme and Rush as if to stage manage a narrative. The galactic coffers are EMPTY! ANAKIN has to bail Padme out of the slam but he's none too pleased to hear about Clovis. CLOVIS has a magnificent ski lodge crash pad! That downhill chase by sledge on the snowy slopes of Scipio is like something out of a Bond movie! I love how EMBO uses his hat as a SNOWBOARD! R2-D2 to the rescue! He pilots Anakin's shuttle to intercept the sledge just as they run out of mountain! EMBO contacts his employer DARTH SIDIOUS to confirm the successful conclusion of his assignment! The entire drama has been skillfully orchestrated according to Sidious' design.

Since you commented on the hairpiece, Padmé wears it in episode 3 when Palpatine declares the Galactic Empire. It is designed to be reminiscent of the rebel insignia from the original trilogy. Also now is the time to think about season 7. While you have been committed to chronological order (and I think it is the better way to enjoy Clone Wars) I would suggest you watch season 7 in release order, as the story will flow more naturally, especially for a first time watcher.

Kerelon

I agree!

This arc is solid, pretty damn solid. Not a whole lot to say about it other than seeing the darker side of Anakin come through was dope and the death of captain Thorn was oddly brutal with the way it was shot. Not too bad at all!

Sean H

The droid was pretty goofy. 😁 RIP Thorn, we barely knew ya!

kaiielle

I always forget about this ARC, like I know it exists and I remember Thorn’s Heroic Last Stand, and Anakin beating up Clovis, but yeah. I LOVE that Dooku sent a Medical Droid undercover to recruit Clovis, SO GOOFY😂. I laughed so hard even though I’ve seen this multiple times before! Just love that the Doctor Droid was like “you’re all patched up, anyway, I’m an agent of Dooku, BOO!” Love it. Also fun fact time In Legends Darth Plagus the Wise is a Muun. The Bounty Hunter hear you’ve seen a lot so far in the show, it’s Embo, he fought Savage, he fought with Obi Wan, Anakin, and Ashoka against Hondo, he was a contestant in the BOX with Undercover Obi Wan, he helped Kidnap Palpatien. WHICH is actually kinda cool to think that Palms hired a Bounty Hunter that he KNOWS is capable, because that Bounty hunter helped kidnap him😅😂. Thorn was a brand new clone, RIP THORN. I love the added context we get for Anakin and Padmé in hear, we can see that Rush and Anakin both don’t respect Padmé’s wishes OR Consent sometimes 😬.

Justin

You're welcome! 😊

kaiielle

I just finished the orders arc and now I'm about to start this one. I just want to say thank you for the reactions this friday night lol. Awesome way to end the day!!
