Hawke and Delpy were provided a scenario for each scene and beats to hit but otherwise the dialogue is almost completely improvised by the two of them! A real high-wire act. The ambiguous ending had romantics and cynics debating for years! The duo return for two more chapters each made nine years apart in France and Greece, respectively. They are called "Before Sunset" and "Before Midnight". The trilogy is a marvel.
