Variations and Phased Maps
Added 2022-09-22 03:00:40 +0000 UTCHi everyone!
Wanted to run a quick post by you all! What variations would you prefer for my releases? Would you like regular map variations, or phased map variations? I.e. would you prefer variations as just separate, unconnected maps, or would you like to keep receiving phased variations where different scenarios play out?

Thanks for your feedback. I will certainly never stop making phased maps. That's what people came here to support me for, that's what people expect of me. Phased maps are the singular reason my Patreon has grown to where it is. And I also enjoy making them, so they will never go away. But if some simple static variations will make it easier for folks to incorporate my maps into their games, then I am all for it. I don't even think I will ever 100% stop doing phased map variations either, just maybe some variations will be replaced with the static ones.

2022-09-22 19:43:52 +0000 UTCI really love the idea of the phased maps, but i think like…if my players are on a ship thats sinking, if i can implement a phased map thats cool, but i can also narrate that. Vs if you offer a basic 2 level ship and ones interior is a big cargo ship used by smugglers and the other is like a cruise liner with loads of individual rooms and is just like a maze. And then you put both on sea maps and both on astral sea maps…im going to have more instances to use that. So if theyre what you enjoy, i say keep doing them, but if its about whats economical for your time…id say it might be something to consider? But i still certainly wouldnt rule them out completely.

2022-09-22 17:06:34 +0000 UTCI am really appreciating your encounter/adventure pdfs. You spend a long time making great maps and I'm not creative enough to implement them. Your encounters are super helpful.

2022-09-22 17:05:26 +0000 UTCI would love to offer additional maps, but since I draw everything by hand, developing a single map takes a lot of time. I'll give it a thought though. If anything, maybe I can give you all an extra map on occasion.

2022-09-22 15:02:16 +0000 UTCYour phased maps are awesome! In my opinion, giving 3 to 9 variations of a map is good and give choices, but I will only ever use one of the 9 for an encounter. If you were to offer regular map variations, maybe you offer maps that lead up to the phased map room... like a dungeon connected to the phased map or something.

2022-09-22 11:34:58 +0000 UTCIn a about a month, give or take. Dragons are going to be a big feature in our campaign (crit role fans) but I also have plans for Klauth to make an appearance, in Mount Hotenow, which will erupt in streams of volcanic lava heading towards their keep in Neverwinter! It is being guarded by fire trolls and mephits, and is at the centre of a plot to open up a planar portal to the Abyss. Klauth is on a mission to "stop" the portal opening but only to get the party to his mountain and put a stop to their meddling once and for all.

2022-09-22 07:40:10 +0000 UTCoh I meant in general! I will definitely be putting your white dragon map on my to do list. When do you think you will need it?

2022-09-22 07:20:37 +0000 UTCI will check out all your variations to see if any are suitable for my "vision". I used the one with the metal goddess in the Temple and my players LOVED it! It's the one with the beams of light

2022-09-22 07:04:26 +0000 UTCthank you! Quick question: why not use any of the phases as variations? Every map essentually has 3-9 "variations" that dont need to be used as phases per se. Is it just that there arent enough variations? Or does it feel like a waste?

2022-09-22 06:08:57 +0000 UTCI adore your phased maps but I second the idea that it's also tons easier to find a reason to use a "random" map than it is to use a phased one. These are reserved for special moments, like boss fights. Speaking of which, could you devise one that involves a white dragon breaking out of snow, causing an avalanche? That's my next boss that's currently being fore-shadowed. Keep up the good work!

2022-09-22 05:46:07 +0000 UTCCould you elaborate what you mean by "this needs to be the norm"? And thanks for chiming in! I really appreciate you all letting me know your preference!

2022-09-22 04:33:35 +0000 UTCYeah I definitely strongly second this. Using the phased maps is fun and they are amazing but they definitely give a vibe of "this needs to be the norm" or "this is a boss fight". The latter being difficult for a GM and the former being ideal but then "wasteful" when there are so many

2022-09-22 03:05:03 +0000 UTCI really enjoy the phased map versions, but it's hard to work out ways to use them all! I know that's my bad as a DM, but beautiful but technically simpler maps would be a lot easy to find an excuse to throw them in somewhere. Don't stop doing them completely though, dear god, it's a very neat and unique thing
