Hi everyone!
I finally edited the time-lapse video of me painting the Nordic Ruins battle map, so in case you've ever been curious how I make my maps, here it is!
And here's a quick outline of what I go through to make every map:
1. Planning stage - this won't show up in the time-lapse, but I usually take a whole day just to plan the map out in my head.
2. Sketch - Sometimes I skip this step, unless I am painting structures. Wilderness can be a lot more loose, and I really can just go wild with painting it. Structures, however, usually need a decent amount of planning. This is why sometimes you will see me sketch it out first, and other times I just go directly to the next step.
3. Mid-tone shapes. I fill in the basic shapes with mid-tones. This step is pretty straight-forward, especially with this map. I just pick whatever basic color that fits whatever I am painting, and fill it in.
4. Adding light and dark for large shapes. This helps me define the source of light, and the general "feel" of the map. Most times I prefer to have very strong sources of light, which usually makes for dramatic maps.
5. Detailed light. I go into the details at almost the very end, once all the general large shapes are already defined and I don't have to worry about them.
6. Polish - I add textures and finer details like small shadows and highlights, and fix any mistakes that may have persisted through the entire process.
Hope you enjoy the time-lapse!
