The Bad Batch: The Solitary Clone [2x03] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

It does seem a bit more serious this time around! It's definitely Crosshair, at least that's how I interpret it. He starts the episode alone and ends it alone. The bit of time with Cody in between was a good connection but then Cody went AWOL. Really excited for next weeks episode!

kaiielle

Looks like The Bad Batch is getting serious and a little dark as it matures. But who is the solitary clone? Crosshair or Cody?

Mark Bukumunhe

Yeah, great point there. Even still, regardless of how long rotations are 32 of them is still a LOT. 😥 I would not have wanted to be Crosshair!

kaiielle

What an amazing episode. I guess there's not much more to say that hasn't already been commented on, but I'll at least throw in my thoughts about Crosshair's survival on Kamino. It really doesn't matter that much if the ocean water is salty or not. If we look back at the few times we visited Kamino in the movies, it was always raining heavily from a very dense cloud coverage. All that ocean will create lots of clouds which will make it more likely than not to rain. secondly, we don't know how long 32 rotations would be as all stellar objects have their own rotational speed. For reference the Moon's is around 27.3 Earth days per rotation (exactly the same as it's orbital period), while Jupiter's is 9 hours and 56 minutes (which for such a massive planet makes it bulge at the equator, so the equatorial diameter is over 9000km longer than the pole to pole diameter). If Crosshair could get water from rain, an average human can survive about 3 (Earth) weeks without food, so assuming a Kamino rotation is perhaps a little bit shorter in addition to clones probably having better survivability overall, his survival is plausible even if he didn't get something to eat. Also since some time has passed from S1, I guess it was a close call as he's needed some time to recover.

Sorry, I replied to this on the Patreon mobile app and it didn't post for some reason. The high-five from those droids was a fun moment, yeah! And thank you for the kind words as well.

kaiielle

Replied to this hours ago but Patreon mobile didn't share it, I guess. Thanks for all of your comments! Kyle Katarn posted some deciphering pictures on his Twitter about that wall which I thought was funny! Did the episode state that's what the wall is? Or did you look that up?

kaiielle

I love when I reply on the Patreon mobile app and then I log in here hours later and find my comment nowhere... sigh. Thanks for the comments! Especially the last one. 😊 We def always notice things about ourselves nobody else does, I should stop calling it out but it's what I doooo. Yes, a Cody and Rex reunion would make me SQUEAL.

Yep, this was a good, solid episode. I don’t know about the best in animated Star Wars (there are certainly others in my Top 5 list). I will say the Cody thing is pretty cool. Plus, the battle droid “Nice Shot!” high five also - strangely - made me happy. We’ve all been in ruts - so take your time - there is plenty of Kaiielle content (spelled it correctly that time) for me personally to catch up on. 😁

An incredible episode! I always love getting more Separatist Battle Droids! And the fact that they are the good guys this time was really cool. Like we were all invested in the Clones completing their mission, but also not. An interesting thing I’ve thought about and I think we see it hear portrayed well, is that with the Empire trying to Phase out the Clones in favor for these Prototype Stormtroopers; the Clones are being sent in with relatively small numbers against decently well armed foes. As well as CLONES are being used for Grunt work too like getting Dooku’s War Chest moved. I think this is a purposeful effort by Tarkin/Rampart to basically “USE UP” the Clones rather than “swapping them out”. I have a bunch of theories about this Season from Trailer scenes, but can’t mention most of them due to additional information about some stuff from other shows😅. But I will say that I think Cody Will probably meet up with Rex. I love how EFFECTIVE the Droids, and Clones are in this episode. We NEVER see Stormtroopers this Skillful or Coordinated. Those BX-Commando Droids were JUMPING AROUND EVERYWHERE!!! And there were SO MANY CREATIVE KILLS this episode. From the Shot down the tank Barrel, to the Bomb on a Droid- while the droid slowly slips beneath the Shield move. AND CROSSHAIRS ULTRA TRICK SHOT!!! Loved this episode SO SO MUCH! Also the Memorial Wall that Cody and Crosshair meet up at twice, is a Wall with all the names of the Clones who died during the First Battle of Geonosis on it.

This episode is soooo good!! I’m also praying we get a Rex and Cody reunion too, we haven’t seen them together for agesss. Crosshair was really interesting in this episode for me because when he saw that mother and her child, he didn’t execute them like he probably would have in season 1, so I definitely agree that the chip is wearing off, not to mention the fact crosshair actively asked Rampart about Cody and lied about the rest of the bad batch being killed so he clearly cares in some capacity which gives me hope (: I’m praying we see more of cody sooner rather than later, I need to know if he gets the chip removed. I NEED to. Loved this reaction KL, and FYI, I genuinely didn’t even notice those pimple marks or whatever they’re called until you pointed them out /‘d even then I couldn’t tell so don’t worry about them being noticeable in any regard (:

Very true. I wonder if Crosshair ended up killing any aquatic life to live off of during those 32 days? Probable. I couldn't imagine being so alone for that long on such a tall platform like that. Great point made and I agree. Kinda likely at this point, I feel. Thanks for your comment!

kaiielle

It's possible Kamino's ocean isn't a salt filled one. For all we know the entire ocean could be fresh water, it is an alien planet after all xD Also, it's so crazy seeing the separatist droids be what are basically the GOOD guys. But I mean, when you think about it, the Rebels in the original series are basically the doing what the separatists SAID they were trying to do. Granted, the leaders of the Confederacy of Independent Systems were technically only using that as a cover for their own greed. But to the everyday person living on Separatist worlds... well... the Empire is basically everything they were told the Republic secretly was. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the Rebel forces were made up of former Separatists.

The small detail you noted, that was literally the top comment on Blind Wave's reaction when I watched it after posting this. 😅 Shared it in my Discord server too! Was that you who commented it on YouTube? Or are you just sharing someone else's words? 😉 Either way, thanks for sharing. Your random hypothesis is interesting. 👀 Very excited to see if the next episode picks up right after this or if we take a breather and return to our Bad Batchers and Omega for a little side mission. Or maybe both!

kaiielle

Yeah, it's hard to know what Rampart means exactly but I have faith that we get to see Cody again! Especially since AWOL means "absent without official leave" so I think if Rampart actually killed Cody, he would have been honest with Crosshair about that to assert Empire dominance and maybe issue it as a threat to Crosshair? But who knows! I know, I'm so hopeful that Crosshair will realize that the Empire suuuucks! And that he needs to be with his boys again. Thank you! 💛

kaiielle

Few thoughts: I love how this is essentially a Clone Wars episode however the Clones are now the villains and the Separatists and the droids are the good guys protecting the freedom and rights of the civilians. How the turn tables..lol I love the sassy droid. "MMMMHMMM" lmao. It's a small detail but I love how the episode starts with Crosshair waking up on Coruscant, seemlngly at peace working for the Empire. Just living his day to day life. Yet at the end we have a similar shot after Cody gives him that small talk, it's as if he can no longer sleep peacefully. He is lying in bed with his hand on his head. Like he ca't sleep and he's feeling conflicted or at least something is picking his brain. You're right though Cody wasn't in the final arc of Clone Wars, last we see him prior to this is Revenge of the Sith. Random hypothesis, I feel like Rampart is going to try and frame Crosshair. Or if the Bad Batch resurfaces and someone like Tarkin finds out Rampart is going to accuse Crosshair of helping clones escape the Empire to get the heat off himself. I don't think it was an accident that he noted the fact that clones go missing after being around Crosshair.

Volume

What a great episode ! A lot of Andor vibes in it. I wonder what really happened to Cody, i don't really trust the words of Rampart after he killed Wilco in cold blood last week. Crosshair is starting to feel like he is not happy with his choices. It is really time buddy ! He is the solitary clone for sure now. I hope you will feel better soon, thanks for the reaction.

Guiguioh

Thanks for watching and enjoying the reaction! To your point, I will respectfully disagree. To me, a totalitarian rule with no opposition is not peaceful. With true peace, there is no oppression and people are free from war and free from being persecuted due to a whole variety of things, like race, sex, religion, politics, etc. The Empire might not bother them, but they certainly don't live in peace as long as the Galactic Empire exists.

kaiielle

Hello There: Peace should not be the goal, freedom is the goal. Peace can be described as totalitarian rule with no opposition. You have to fight for freedom. This episode proves that point. The civilians on that planet now have peace with the Empire but no freedom. Fun reaction hope you feel better soon.

Pacmule

My assumption is that the planet's water was ocean water, as in not safe to drink and would actually kill you to drink, but you might be right. Yeah, this season is really starting off strong and I'm here for it!

kaiielle

Surviving on Kamino would be hard without food, but he'd have plenty of water considering the planet is basically all water. Love seeing Cody again! This season seems to have a much more narrative focus as opposed to episodes with random side quests like last season.
