Thor: The Dark World (2013) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hey everyone! Here is the full-length reaction to the second Thor movie! I won't lie, it took me hours to get my thoughts properly in order for this one for the edited reaction, so much so that I literally felt like I was back in university trying to force myself to write an essay LOL. As I kept trying to think of what I wanted to say, I kept forgetting what happened in this movie, which hasn't really happened to me before. This was still a fun movie (visuals and such) and not an awful watch, but it feels largely forgettable for me, with the exception of Loki. So there's that. I'm looking forward to all of your comments about this movie! [Direct link here.]

Enjoy. 💛 And remember, Patreon hangout happening in Discord in like 9 hours! Maybe I should go to sleep?!

Thor: The Dark World (2013) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Oooh neat fun fact!

Despite its flaws I still enjoy this film. But the best thing I can say about it is it’s Hemsworth’s first appearance as Thor with his real hair.

Edit coming very soon! Currently just in copyright checking hell. 😊 Glad you enjoyed the reaction.

The only things I really love about this movie are Loki and the Soundtrack, those are amazing. The rest of the movie fell kinda flat for me, but funnily enough, I still really enjoy the movie for those two parts alone. Reading that it took you hours to get your thoughts in order properly for the youtube outro has made me very excited to see that once you're done editing, I wonder what kind of conclusions you came to with all that pondering.

That's a great point! Thanks for sharing. Yes, in the moment I did enjoy what I was watching which is why I said the movie is fun. But the more space that resulted in between watching the movie and then thinking back on it and reflecting, the more I realized that I wasn't really sure what I even watched. 🤣

Before today, I had only watched this movie once. I enjoy it but it’s not the best. I liked Jane being on Asgard and Thor’s dynamic with Loki. Thor already had his character arc in the first movie so he doesn’t move forward here. Neither does Loki. Which I think is why it tends to fall flat for people. From a personal perspective I don’t like it when movies need to rely on an opening narration for you to follow the story you’re about to watch. I first saw Star Wars before I was old enough to read yet I could completely follow the story without reading the iconic crawl. If you need an opening narration to jump start the movie, maybe another pass over the script would have helped. Overall it looked like you enjoyed the movie in the moment. Looking forward to your thoughts once it’s been fully absorbed.

That's a great point about Erik that I couldn't quite pin point myself. Definitely out of place! And I just think so much more could have been done with what they were trying to do with him... Thanks for watching!

Darcy, a complaining and complicated political science major “interning with Jane for credit?” is LOT. I felt like she was written with a laugh track to follow behind every statement [applause]. I also feel like Stellan Skarsgård’s character Dr. Selvig, the senior astrophysicists, seems out of place in this film - Stellan is a magnificent actor in his own right whose talent is somewhat wasted in this film. And then there is the plot, which even today I can’t recall entirely unless I rewatch Odin’s prologue to the whole thing. The best part for is that they somewhat fixed Hemsworth eyebrows and allowed for his natural looking beard. Jane in Asgard is the most memorable for me (I wanted more of her and Mama Frigga). And I would have personally liked to have seen Lady Sif added to the mission for a contrast of Sif and Thor vs. Jane and Thor, which would have been fun. Overall, it’s an okay film with lots of likable characters (yep, including Darcy) and great stuff by Odin, Thor, Loki and Frigga. KL - I can see the wheels turning for you throughout which makes this well worth a rewatch for me.

I think it's also underwhelming because there isn't really a character arch for Thor. The payoff at the end where he says he isn't ready for the throne - it wasn't earned. When did he learnt this fact? We have no lead in to that. So yeah, underwhelming. Also, the villain was bland. "i want to destroy everything because I'm the bad guy and that's what bad guys do". And way that he was defeated was lackluster as well. Overall a very meh movie.

The Dingo

I only did it for The Avengers because of Ashley Johnson, it hasn't really crossed my mind for any other movie. I think I would love to explore deleted scenes a bit later on as a fun way to revisit these phases. I'll decide then, so yeah let me discover for myself. Have a great weekend too!

Thanks for sharing, Kat! I love that it's your #2 movie!

kaiielle

Thanks Galen! Makes me feel a bit better.

kaiielle

Thanks for the kind words! I do feel it was the film. Definitely the weakest one to me so far.

kaiielle

Their physical appearance is COOL, especially Malekith, but that's about all they've got going for them.

kaiielle

Always trying to have fun with these!

This movie is just weird for me, I don’t like it but I don’t hate it. It’s just kinda there, very similar to iron man 2. I think the reason why the climax felt so underwhelming (at least for me) was due to its weidly fast pacing and really awkward cutways to that overly cheesy love thing with Darcy and Ian. It also kinda felt like we already had a climax in a way? In the scene with Thor, Loki and Jane as at least for me, the stakes in that scene felt so much higher than they were in the final fight. I also noticed that because Thors hammer was taking so long to get to him, I could tell that it was gonna come in last second because they just stopped cutting away for a second and I was like ‘oh yeah so that’s how Thor’s gonna beat him’ the final fight just felt so half baked and the movie very clearly wanted to wrap itself up asap which is why they cut so quickly to everything being fixed etc. Overall this movie definitely had good elements, Loki of course being the main one, but it falls flat for me in more ways than one. Loved this reaction tho, KL, seeing you absolutely bewildered in the Loki scene gave me a good chuckle 🤣

YES! My comment was long enough as it is, but I almost 😜 completely second (2 BG is not my favorite sit-com, but I did enjoy it) your words in regards to this movie,Natalie Portman, Darcy… I can’t wait to see if anymore of your wild takes are similar to mine! Cheers to Thor:The Dark World, it is a beautiful mess, and I love it!

CheshireKat528

hey, I completely understand your emotions towards this movie. It is kinds hard to understand and follow. To my suprise, this movie is actually my favorite Thor movie of all of them (won't elaborate in further detail, because you haven't seen the future movies). I had to really laugh of joy when you said that you found Darcy kind of annoying in this movie, bc she is literally my favorite part of this movie, but man I do understand if you don't like it. The humor in this movie is (and I really think it's bc of Darcy) really Sitcom-esque. i think it's because at the time of the movie Kat Dennings had the Lead in 2 Broke Girls (My fav sitcom ever) and you can really see how the writer took inspiration from her role there. I also loved to see so much Jane! I love Jane as a character and of Natalie Portman as an actress. I feel like it hits a quite good spot for me. It's not my fav MCU movie, but it's good in my opinion, but I really got some wild takes on some movies, you will see in the future hehe. Looking forward to your future reaction^^ Send all love and happiness :)

P.s. I keep forgetting to ask. I remember you looking up some deleted/alternate scenes from The Avengers. Is this something you would enjoy suggestions for from time to time, providing the scene doesn’t contain spoilers, or do you prefer to discover them for yourself? Take care, and I hope you have a good weekend!

CheshireKat528

I like that you caught that the guard was Loki the way you did. I haven’t seen many other reactors figure it out that way. Some don’t catch it all and are surprised at the end. Most catch or only comment on the green shimmer when we first see the guard on the Dark World. Great attention to detail! In my MCU tier ranking, this movie is my 2nd favorite movie overall to date. My 1st being The Avengers. As someone who loves this movie and knows it well, I totally get your initial thoughts. It can be hard to nail down what is “off” here. This one is a lot to take in. I think some of the reasons are because it needed to be and do so many things, some MCU installments just have to bare that burden. Some pull it off, some struggle with it. You could say the are burdened with the “glorious purpose” of keep the Universal story flowing, sometimes to the detriment of the story that the individual movie is trying to tell. For me, the elements that I enjoy most in this film far outweigh the ones I could take or leave. This is one that I can always count on to bring out the giddy Marvel fan girl in me and make me smile every time, even and especially when times are gray. It doesn’t hurt that Loki is my favorite character, and if this movie is nothing else, it is Loki’s movie. We end with Loki sitting on his throne, in all his mischievous glory. 💚🗡💚

CheshireKat528

Dark World is definitely a weak, maybe even the weakest one in the MCU. The Villain is bland and not well written and the Script of the Movie is also not good at all. Totally understand your struggle recollect what you watched.

Curaitis

Hi KL, I'm not surprised you struggled with the review of this film. I know that you have to be working much harder than some people might realise and I suspect it can be exhausting. I also suspect though that your difficulty collecting your thoughts has less to do with yourself and more to do with the film. I find this film the Wednesday of the MCU, a hump to get over. It's not bad imo its just not particularly great either. ...it's a bit meh. As a colour it's grey. I think you know what I mean. I know you don't want expectations set , but we don't want you thinking that these films are going to be a trudge for you either, at least not to watch. They're not.X. All that said if you are struggling I know that we all (myself included) value your health and wellbeing over that of the entertainment you provide, so please take care of yourself. Karl.

I think the villain or threat is pretty lackluster in this one, and this is largely down to the writing. The cast and the visuals are doing their jobs, but the dark elves are an interesting idea that just doesn’t end up being very interesting. In the comics Malekith is a great bad guy, but that character never made it to the screen.

Nicholas Bielik

Glad you had some fun with it, It's definitely my personal least favourite mcu movie, or close at least
