Jaws (1975) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hi everyone! DANG, this movie was sure something! I need to stop posting spoiler-y statements about how I felt about movies in these posts so that you can watch to find out for yourself! But all I'll say is that I can understand why this film is regarded as one of the "great ones" if you will. [Direct link here.]

The edit for this will be dropping on Friday on the channel, so you can expect early access to be here at some point before then. PS. In tomorrow's newsletter, I'll be sharing lots of info about my new structure and plan for releases. Looking forward to sharing it all!

As always, thanks for everything and looking forward to chatting about this one! Enjoy! 💜

PPS. I'm not sure if I am gonna ever watch Jaws 2, so for now I'm just sticking this film into the "stand-alone films" tag, even though I know a sequel exists.

Nice react! I often tell people that Rocky is not a boxing movie, and that Jaws is not a shark movie. You can skip the Jaws sequels IMO.

So fun! Glad you enjoyed it.

Definitely a classic! I love the chaos and dialogue in this movie. John Williams is a boss. I’m always unsure how reactors will judge this movie. So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again Kaiielle, love that you don’t shy away from classics like this one.

Thanks for sharing Bryan!

I’m late to party, sorry. Been a long week for me, it was nice to finally have the time and sit down to watch this afternoon. First I’m glad Ella is ok. Don’t you just love it when they test our love and attention by hiding discomfort and injuries? Now, the movie. This movie established the trifecta that is actually still present today. 1) Summer Blockbuster 2) Steven Spielberg 3) John Williams. It’s well paced and the tension is riveting. I had not watched this straight through in several years, it really was great to do so again. I have always been scared of water. I have distinct memories of Disney World at age 5 as the submarine in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride submerged and again at age 6 swimming in a very clear lake in Texas and fish touching my leg as they swam by. When I eventually saw Jaws the premise really stuck with me. While I have been in the ocean before, I have not been in past my thighs. Nope.

That'd be epic.

Jaws is such a great movie! Really scary too. What's scarier is that this was based on true events. My favorite scene is Quint's monologue about the USS Indianapolis. Which is also a true story. They should've made a Jaws prequel about Quint surviving those shark attacks.

Thank you!

awesome reaction! this is clearly filmed back in the 70's, and is one of those films that shows that well done practical effects will stand the test of time! as i recall, the shark was named "bruce" by it's operators, and was one very very challenging to build and operate. one of my favorite things about quint is the way he's largely helpful to brody, even though he does it quietly. and treats him fairly well - as long as hooper isnt around!

Tom R

Definitely a good one! Fun to edit too.

Absolutely love this movie. Don't consider it a horror movie at all, although it does have one or two good jump scares in it. It's just good storytelling, good, naturalistic acting, and John William's kick-ass score. The Indianapolis scene, where they share scars and Quint tells his story, is--for me--the heart of the movie. One man's lifelong horror brought to bear before his obsession with killing his nightmare takes him down into the deep.

Steve Mercier

Wow, hard disagree.

When the mayor told Brody "I'm sorry, Martin. She's wrong," he meant Brody wanted the beaches closed but the mayor forced him to open them. But she was blaming Brody. So he was right when he told Brody she was wrong. He was actually kind of taking the blame away from Brody and putting it on himself.

MotoDork

That's fair. I feel like this is def a type of story that I would prefer watching over reading. And I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction!

Fun watch-along. It’s quite satisfying to me to see all the key notes land with someone watching for the first time 48 years later, and I didn’t even make the thing. Yes, there is a book but I’d venture to say it’s one of the rare instances in which the movie blows the book out of the water (if you will). That said, the novel’s author, Peter Benchley, appears in the movie as the TV reporter on the beach right before the chum hits the fan in the pond.

Thanks Tyler!

Thanks for watching and thanks for the info!

Number 4 for me. Heh.

Glad you enjoyed it Sean! Thanks for sharing! 🥳

YES!!! The Goodbye Girl, that is one of my all time favorite movies. My Mom first had me watch it when I was 8/9. We would always quote it to each other. I then went on to be on a big Neil Simon fan. Seems Like Old Times, California Suite, and The Out-of-Towners(1970) are also some of my favorites. Such classics. Great recommendation!

This is in my top 5 favourite movies for a reason, it is absolutely immaculate. Everything about it is just so phenomenal. I could write hundreds of essays on why this film is a masterpiece but I’ll keep it short. Simply amazing, in my opinion the closest thing to a perfect movie (: LOVEDDD this reaction KL, it’s so interesting seeing you watch some older and more iconic movies!

Sean H

Skip the sequels, watch The Goodbye Girl (1977) , or Always (1989)

If you haven't already looked it up Yes Quint's story about the USS Indianapolis is absolutely true. Not many movies effect society as much as this one. A generation of people were scared out of the ocean. Resorts were complaining about the lack of visitors. Well done

*Three* sequels exist: Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, and Jaws: The Revenge. The fourth movie provided one of the more famous quips in film history: Michael Caine, who played a role in it, later commented, "I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific." The second sequel had an infamous alternative treatment, which ended up being scrapped in favor of the straightforward 3D movie they ended up making. Frankly, it sounds better than the three existing Jaws sequels put together: it was called Jaws 3, People 0 and it was a straight-up spoof of the original. John Hughes worked on the script before it was canned. You might get a handful of people putting up a defense of Jaws 2, but my guess is you won't actually have people clamoring for you to watch any of the sequels.

My number 2 favorite film of all time

Enjoy!

Oh, can’t wait for this! One of my all time favorites. A classic for sure. I’m sure I’ll have lots to say about it. So happy you watched this! An early Spielberg classic that doesn’t disappoint.
