Rebels: Twilight of the Apprentice [2x21 + 2x22] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Very good symbolism in all that, yeah!

Opps. I’m a little late to the party here… I love these two episodes. Getting reintroduced to Maul and also getting to see him play his game differently with Ezra is so cool. The Inquisicopters are indeed ridiculous… Ahsoka and Vader… I love how she cuts up his helmet, uncovering the right side of his face while Obi-Wan managing the same, uncovering the left side of his face. Almost like them, being the two jedis closest to him could only partially get through to Anakin. But only Luke was able to completely get Vader (represented by the helmet) off him.

Rune

Thanks for explaining all this!

kaiielle

Those were some of the most iconic Rebels episodes in my opinion, for obvious reasons. Truly great, and in release order it was the first time we saw Ahsoka and Maul interact, as Rebels was released before Season 7 of Clone Wars. A small detail: Vader does have a different combat style than Anakin, I am not sure how much of these explanation is Canon or Legends, but what I've heard somewhere is that Vader had to adapt a lot to fight in his mechanical suite. Regardless of the explanation, he is always portrayed as less acrobatic and flashy than Anakin with the lightsaber, with more direct and powerful strikes. I think the power levels as portrayed in these episodes are interesting, and mostly make sense: Kanan and Ezra are portrayed as holding their own against inquisitors, whereas Maul and Ahsoka are superior to them, And obviously, Vader is superior to everyone, while Ahsoka can withstand him for a while, I do not think there's any doubt that in normal circumstances, Ahsoka would end up losing to Vader. The inquisitors are trained as tools to hunt down the remaining Jedi, but are far away in power and Dark Side knowledge from true Sith, and Maul was being trained as a true Sith by Sidious, so it makes sense he could force choke an inquisitor so easily. Ezra and Kanan, on the other hand, are "low ranking" Jedi, Kanan never actually completed his training with his master, while his and Ezra's powers are obviously growing, they are the right targets for the inquisitors. And, well, Ahsoka also "didn't" become a Jedi Knight under Anakin, but she was actually deemed ready to become one by the council, she just refused,. and even without that, being Anakin's padawan puts you well above any other padawan in terms of training and power. The voice from the temple, it's true it sounds a bit like Mother Talzin, but it would not make sense, as Mother Talzin was not a Sith, the voice is probably that of some ancient female Sith. Now what I wanted most to comment on: Malachor. In KOTOR 2, which is legends (not Canon), Malachor V was the site of the last battle of the Mandalorian Wars, where Meetra Surik (the "canonical" name of the player character in Kotor 2) deployed and fired a super weapon that caused mass casualties both in the Mandalorian side and on the Republic and Jedi side led by Revan. The amount of death caused a "wound in the force" located in the planet. At the end of Kotor 2, Malachor V is completely destroyed. So, in legends, there can't be a Sith temple in Malachor V that survives to the Rebels time, simply because the planet itself doesn't exist anymore. Of course, KOTOR 2 is not canon, so, while Rebels Malachor clearly takes inspiration from Malachor V it clearly is not the same planet with the same history. I think there are two options for your own head canon: - accepting that Rebels and KOTOR2 are not part of the same "version" of the universe, and that the Rebels portrayal of Malachor is loosely based on KOTOR2's Malachor but the battle that "no one won" was between Jedi and Sith and not part of the Mandalorian wars, and Malachor V never existed in the Rebels universe. - But there's another possibility to reconcile the two Malachors in your head canon (at least until we are presented with contradictory evidence), and it is that the Malachor in Rebels is not the same planet as Malachor V, simply another planet in the same system. Malachor V could have still been destroyed at the end of KOTOR 2, and with its dark history, it would make sense that the Sith would be interested in building a temple in another planet of the same system. I accept that there will be times when we can't reconcile legends and canon, but as long as we can, I like to think of ways to do that in my own head canon, specially for the stories I know and love from Legends.

Michał Zawisza Alvarez

Yeah that's fair.

kaiielle

Yeah, definitely! Super excited to continue on. I think Yoda sending them to Malachor is very interesting and eager to see the consequences of this trip.

kaiielle

Yes, I like that the Kenobi show did the same helmet busting that we see here. Very cool.

kaiielle

Thanks for the fun facts!

kaiielle

Probably all three! I also would love to see more of Maul's story filled out. Looking forward to the next two seasons!

kaiielle

For some reason these 2 episodes just hit different than the rest of the series for me. Maybe it’s Maul, maybe it’s Ahsoka / Anakin, maybe it’s Maybelline idk. “There’s always a little truth in legend” Love this quote because it relates to so many things in SW past and current events. 😉 I actually don’t mind the Heli-Sabers. It seems appropriate for a show like Rebels. I laugh every time I see it because it’s so ridiculous but it doesn’t bother me at all. Loved watching Maul take out an Inquisitor, such a ruthless Maul thing to do. Timeline wise this falls after Solo so he must be done with Crimson Dawn. There is still so much of Mauls story that is unknown between CW and Solo and Solo to this episode. Would be great to see more of his story filled in. Did anyone else recognize the voice coming from the Holocron as the same one from the Ghost of Mortis arc in CW known as the Ones? Where Anakin learned his fate? Overall I really enjoy the animation in these 2 episodes, appreciate the emotional weight they carry in the overall SW storyline and anytime Ahsoka is involved, I’m all in. Thanks for the reaction! I’ll be watching most of the episodes from here on out as I need a refresher on some of it before Ahsoka comes out.

"two jedi and a....part timer" is one of my favorite star wars lines now, the delivery is perfection. If you think of the Ezra/Maul dynamic like the Anakin/Palpatine dynamic it makes a lot of sense. Maul appeals to Ezra's compassion and need for victory and obviously Ezra feeds into it. The difference is that Maul doesn't have long enough to groom him and there was no Padme and Ezra gets to see the dark side in parallel with Maul trying to tell him what to do. Up until the end of Episode 3, Anakin had no idea about Palpatine using the dark side until it was too late. When Yoda sends them to Malachor, Ezra talked about fighting and winning and that's why Yoda sent them there. Ezra needed to see that fighting and winning isn't everything. When he ultimately had the power in his hands to win, he realized that wasn't what he really wanted. But, now he has the holocron and the last shot of the season is quite the teaser.

Malachor Sith Temple: I loved that we got to see an ancient Jedi and Sith conflict. The Jedi Order launched an attack on the Sith Empire. During the battle, the Jedi attacked the Sith temple, a battle station and superweapon capable of destroying life. Pretty cool would've been a really amazing battle to see. Connection to Old Republic: The weapon was used killing all Jedi and Sith which we see the aftermath of in these two episodes. From my understanding this happened around 3966 BBY so at the time of The Old Republic nearly four thousands years before the events of The Phantom Menace. For reference the game Knights of the Old Republic is set in 3957 BBY. We also see a Crossguard Lightsaber of ancient design. This episode released 30 March 2016 so around three months after the release of The Force Awakens while the teaser released on 28 Nov 2014 where we first saw the Crossguard design. Safe to say that alot of these unquie Lightsaber designs haver origins in the High Republic and Old Republic. Overall Thoughts: Overall these two episode's are pretty solid from Maul appearing to the showdown between Darth Vader and Ahoska Tano and the blinding of Kanan. Made all that more emotional for fans of Clone Wars. Also if you recall back to the Obi Wan show the whole Vader losing half of his mask is inspired by ta similar scene in Rebels only this time between Anakin, Vader, and Ahoska. Season 3 Hype: Cannot wait for Season 3 you'll finally get to meet one of my favourite characters played by Lars Mikkelsen brother of Mads Mikkelsen who played Galen Walton Erso father of protagonist Jyn Erso in Rogue One. No relation in universe just cool that both brothers are in Star Wars. Season 3 and Season 4 are going to be the most important Seasons going forward as those heavily connect to future Star Wars projects.

I remember where I was when I first watched these episodes! Me and my best friend had to watch them on my phone while on Vacation😂, because I was NOT going to wait for this! I love these episodes! I knew about the Maul piercing lore before this, but I am glad you learned about it too, and I love that Maul has a piercing as well! Some fun facts: 1. The voice from the Sith Holocrone was Ventress’ voice actress. 2. The Green Crossguard Saber is a nod to Kylo’s saber, but it also confirms that that is one of the ways lightsabers looked back in the ancient times of the Galaxy. Many people thought Kylo invented a knew lightsaber design before this episode. 3. Obi Wan broke half of Vader’s mask, Ahsoka broke the other half, but only Luke (or Leia probably) could fully remove Vader’s mask. Though Ahsoka did it first here, before Kenobi did in his show. But timeline wise Obi Wan did it first😅. 4. We technically don’t know how many inquisitors their are, we have seen 7 within Rebels, Kenobi, and the one Ahsoka kills in Tales of the Jedi. But the highest numbered one so far is at least 12th from a non TV source. 5. Maul stole one of the Inquisitors Tie Advanced Prototypes that they all fly in Rebels. And in Solo Maul has the same Saber that he has in this show, but if you look closely at it, it looks like a broken Inquisitor Saber, meaning that Maul probably killed an Inquisitor off screen to get it. And Maul tells Qira to meet him on Dathomir in Solo. 6. I love the detail that Chopper holds Kanen’s hand to walk him to Ezra, and that Ahsoka line of “I am no Jedi” is just perfection!

Justin

There are many opinions on the helicopter sabers out there. Many find them silly, I know some people who find them show-ruiningly terrible, personally I find them "odd, but acceptable". But I think I know noone who really entire thinks positively of them.

Pan

LOL that's awesome. And yes, when I was planning out my SW TV series watch order and decided to watch it all in timeline order, I saw that the Ahsoka show coming out this year takes place after Return of the Jedi. So naturally that means she can't die in Rebels.

kaiielle

Wait you know she lives...damn that takes away the excitement. So after this as I mentioned the debate. Ashley Eckstein had Ahsoka lives shirts made cause she didn't know, so Dave Filoni made a Ahsoka dies shirt just to troll ppl 😂🤣

Jam

I like finding older reactions for exactly this reason. But I already know Ahsoka is in Mando, plus we're getting the Ahsoka show this year.

kaiielle

Is Ahsoka alright? This began a fan debate on whether Ahsoka lives or Ahsoka dies. Be careful when watching the reactions depending on when they watched it they might know things you haven't got to and some do reference that.

Jam

We must all share the pain as we did back in 2016 when it first aired. Kanan's last words to Hera before he left for Malachor were, "We'll see each other again"... 😭😭😭 THIS, THIS right here is among PEAK Star Wars content. It's so incredible and what a fantastic finale to the season.

PhoenixVoyager

Beautiful. 😁

kaiielle

Gotcha, thank you for clarifying!

kaiielle

Ahh right, that makes sense!

kaiielle

Legends is definitely a reference to the split. Many of the ppl who work on the animated shows read those stories and were influenced by them.

Jam

Maul meant he had forgotten his real name, because like “Darth Vader" isn't his Anakin's real Name. Darth Maul is his sith name. Palpatine took him from Talzin at a very young age, so he probably wasn't old enough to remember his real name after being called Maul for so long.

Jam

Clone Wars came first or at least one through five till the Disney buy. They had finished episodes already done that they then released as six when Clone Wars was cancelled. Rebels was it's replacement so we saw Maul first in clone Wars then he Rex and Ahsoka in Rebels before season 7 came out, so we knew they survived, but not how till 2020 when season 7 released. The lightsaber that was similar to Kylo Rens being in this was cool due to this airing three months after the first sequel movie aired.
