Rebels: Steps Into Shadow [3x01 + 3x02] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

A lot of people have given you a lot of information, so I'll try not to repeat it. Although I haven't read the novels myself, having Thrawn introduced into canon was a big deal for those who loved him in Legends. A small fact that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet is that General Dodonna who is mentioned at the end first appeared in A New Hope, he is the one giving the briefing on how to destroy the death star. After a long time being curious and hearing a lot about it, I am finally getting around to some Star Wars material in written form (till now only movies, videogames and series),, reading the legends comic series Dawn of the Jedi, which is set even before the Republic was formed, centered around the Jed'aii order, which is the precursor to both the Jedi and Sith. In those Legends comics, the bendu are one of the force-sensitive species that were chosen by the force to start the Jed'aii order, and Ashla and Bogan are the two moons of Tython, the planet that was home to the Jed'aii order. Ashla represented the light side and Bogan the Dark Side, and the Jed'aii were all about balancing the Light and the Dark, just like the Rebels Bendu says he is in the middle. I thought those are interesting connections.

Thanks Emily! I'm excited to dive in eventually.

I'm excited for your reaction to Thrawn, he's one of my favorites of the Imperial villains. Definitely finish rebels first before reading any of the Thrawn trilogies. I do agree with reading the canon Thrawn trilogy first as reading the Ascendancy trilogy first spoils details about the Thrawn trilogy. Then there's the original 90s Thrawn trilogy and (I'm surprised no one here's mentioned it) Outbound Flight which is a prequel to both the 90s Thrawn trilogy (and should be read after those) and another Zahn book Survivor's Quest which focuses on the aftereffects of some of Outbound Flight. It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts on any of the Thrawn trilogies though as I don't see many reactions to that asides from one incomplete reaction to the voiced version of the comic version of the first of the new canon Thrawn novels.

Seeing the differences re: Dark Side is so fun! Excited for more.

"even the desire to do good can lead one down that path" *looks at Dooku and Anakin* I think everyone could use some Bendu therapy. Especially chopper and his Y wing PTSD. We've heard it talked about a lot but haven't seen much of it, but now with Ezra tapping into the dark side, we see it yields quick results but in the long run only hurts you. Ezra was overconfident and resentful of everyone doubting him and had Kanan not come back for him and literally pulled him back to the light (fantastic visual) he would've died in the darkness. Funny how we come full circle with the beginning of Ahsoka's command where she had a bunch people die because she was inexperienced and headstrong without taking in the bigger picture. Now the ghost crew is part of the rebellion and using military ranks and throwing young kids into war that aren't ready for it. Thrawn is no joke, and his books are great. There's a reason he's the only non-human to rise in the ranks of the Empire. He's extremely ingelligent, strategic, and ruthless...the perfect person for the Emperor to have in his pocket.

Ashla and Bogan were in the original script for A New Hope. Ashla meaning Good and Bogan meaning Evil. Bendu was the original name for the Jedi.

Season 3 is set in 2BBY so around a year after Season 2 which was set from 4BBY to 3BBY and just 2 Years Before A New Hope. Rebels does a great job at showcasing the 5 years before A New Hope. Thrawn: Thrawn is a very important character from the Extended universe (Non Canon) who was introduced in the amazing 1991 novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn a novel credited for starting the Extended universe of novels, comics and video games in the 1990s and onward. Heir to the Empire was followed by Dark Forces Rising in 1992, and finally The Last Command in 1993 all set within the 5-7 years after Return of the Jedi. This is the same novel where Mount Tantiss was introduced the location we've been seeing in Bad Batch so that's pretty interesting. These novels together were known as "The Thrawn Trilogy" Thrawn himself was the main antagonist of these novel and in general is one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars. These became a massive hit as the last Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi released over 8 years ago so people were dying for Star Wars content hoping to see what happens next for Luke, Han, and Leia pretty much acting as a Sequel Trilogy to the movies. This was also around 8 years before the next Star Wars film that being The Phantom Menace in 1999 so people were dying for some Star Wars and the EU answered that call. The Thrawn Trilogy of Novels are no longer canon but in 2017 Timothy Zahn the original author and creator of Thrawn released a new canon book simply called "Thrawn" introducing him to canon alongside his reveal in the Rebels Season 3 trailer both happening on the same day I believe at Star Wars celebration 2016. This novel was set in the early days of the Empire making it a prequal to his Rebels appearance. Timothy Zahn also worked alongside Dave for Thrawn's appearance in Rebels just so Dave can have the feedback of the creator with Timothy Zahn being really happy with how he turned out. Grand Admiral Thrawn is voiced by actor Lars Mikkelsen the brother of Mads Mikkelsen who of course played Galen Walton Erso in Rogue One a really talent actor who even looks alot like Thrawn in real life. Recommended Reading: Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy - First Appearance (Non Canon) Heir to the Empire (1991) Dark Forces Rising (1992) The Last Command (1993) Star Wars: The Imperial Trilogy - Thrawn Origin (Canon) Thrawn (2017) Thrawn: Alliances (2018) Thrawn: Treason (2019) Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy - Prequel Series (Canon) Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising (2020) Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good (2021) Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil (2021) As much as I adore the Thrawn Trilogy I do think it's better to skip over that for the mean time starting with the The Imperial Trilogy as those are heavily connected to the canon and shows/movies you've been watching. Then dive into The Ascendancy Trilogy which acts as a prequal and then dive into the Thrawn Trilogy which follows off from the Original Trilogy. As it pretty much gave birth to the EU there's no other novels that you need to read first just keep in mind that the events of the novel didn't happen in the canon timeline.

Oh Boy this is an exciting one!!! I’ll give my thoughts then give some fun facts. I find it fascinating how Ezra interacts with the Darkside compared to Anakin or Ahsoka or Luke. Ezra seems to go a bit too far with force techniques that the Jedi would use. Two examples would be in season one when Ezra summons the Alpha nocturnal cat creature to fight the Grand Inquisitor, he did that out of desperation and fear, resulting in an extremes outcome. As opposed to him and Kanen starting that fight calmly waiting with the beast, and attacking in self defense. And in this episode Ezra uses a mind trick like Zeb says, but he goes so far to control the Walker pilot, forcing his own will on to the Driver, and ultimately making someone kill thier Allie’s and themself😬. But Ezra doesn’t force choke people like Anakin did, or anything more sinister (thus far, if he even does, no spoilers😉). I love that Hondo came back; I love that Ezra met that Imperial again from the Experimental Star Destroyer from Season 2; I loved seeing the Rebels gain more iconic Rebellion ships in the form of the Y-Wings! I loved that Sabine said Zeb’s catch phrase, I love that Hondo was joking about keeping Sabine’s 2nd Blaster, and I love the Bendu and Kanen scenes! Fun facts: 1. Governor Pryce is the Governor of Lothal, and has been mentioned in the prior 2 seasons a few times thus far, but hasn’t appeared yet. 2. Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Kanen all have new outfits and or hair, and I’m pretty sure Hera does as well. Zeb’s is really just that he is now sleeveless. 3. No spoilers for Thrawn, but be careful because he has a number of Canon and Legends books about him. 4. The Bendu mentions the Ashla and the Bogan or Light and Dark. And Ashla as you mentioned in another reaction was Ahsoka’s Alia’s in Tales of the Jedi, and was the word for Force for Zeb’s people. 5. Chopper was shot down in a Y-Wing during the Clone Wars, which they mentioned in this show at some point, but that is why Chopper is hesitant to pilot one in these episodes, he probably has Trauma regarding them. That’s all I have today for fun facts, and I am particularly excited for you to watch this season!

Justin

Loved the reaction, as always! Season 3 probably has some of my favorite episodes out of all the seasons. And as a big Doctor Who fan, getting to hear Tom Baker as The Bendy was an absolute TREAT. If you really are set on reading the Thrawn books, it's good to know that there are currently two canon trilogies out there by Timothy Zahn, the same person who originally created Thrawn way back in the old EU/Legends days. Of the two trilogies I would def advise saving Trawn Ascendancy for last. Yes it takes place earlier in the timeline, but much like the movies, they really are much better experienced in release order. Not to mention, the earlier released trilogy has several tie ins with Rebels. :) I will be looking forward to the next video!
