🎶 Polls, polls, polls, polls, polls, polls... everybody!
Added 2023-04-13 23:29:05 +0000 UTCHello! We're nearly halfway through the month already and I still need to figure out a couple movies for May for the channel! As a reminder, May will have fewer reactions because I am taking some time off at the start of the month simply because I need a break!
So Patrons are getting a poll and YouTube viewers are getting the other poll (which you can also vote in, of course). All the movies in both polls were taken from my Suggestion Form. Please make sure to use this for all of your suggestions as it's so easy to refer to!
I think it's finally time for both a Western and a War film on the channel as these are genres I haven't touched yet, despite doing reactions for over a year now. The Western poll lives here and the War poll is over on YouTube here.
I was kind of surprised to see modern Westerns suggested through my form. I guess when I think of Westerns, I think of movies from the 70s or earlier. Anyway, this poll has an older one and three newer ones.
This poll will end on Monday, Apr 17 at end of day in MDT.
Happy Voting!

2023-04-14 22:04:40 +0000 UTCThese are all spectacular movies, each in their own way...but gotta go with No Country for Old Men. One of my absolute favorites. Good shit.

2023-04-14 20:57:23 +0000 UTCI felt the same!!! This should be interesting.

2023-04-14 09:29:42 +0000 UTCAlthough I've only read True Grit, that experience plus having seen the premises and praise for the other Portis books -- he was not prolific, it's not a long list -- I wonder if he is primed to become one of my favorite authors.

2023-04-14 05:31:16 +0000 UTCWe love a good competition. And it's nice seeing SPR actually winning a poll for once (the YT one), since it hasn't in the past. 😅

2023-04-14 02:27:40 +0000 UTCAside from TWBB -- which I think is just losing because as others have said, I think Western is not a great classification (even though I get it) -- this is a more competitive poll than I expected, which is cool.

2023-04-14 01:28:46 +0000 UTCMy pleasure! 😊 Next time you do another western poll. You should include Tombstone and Young Guns

2023-04-14 01:23:36 +0000 UTCI guess I'll have to add the book to my To-Read List.

2023-04-14 01:13:26 +0000 UTCIt's funny how it worked backwards: many people probably love the 2010 film because they loved the book. I loved the book in part because I already loved the 2010 movie.

2023-04-14 01:03:00 +0000 UTCC'mon True Grit 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Future_Boy85
2023-04-14 00:55:13 +0000 UTCI was going to say the same. I think the 2010 True Grit is more of a different, more faithful adaptation of the Charles Portis novel than really being a “remake” of the 1969 True Grit.

2023-04-14 00:49:07 +0000 UTCWill keep that in mind. 😊

2023-04-14 00:47:26 +0000 UTCAlso, my one commentary on the poll is this: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is actually part of a trilogy. However, there is no explicit continuity between them, and in fact the recurring lead that links all three doesn't even go by the same name in all of them (which is why one of the names for the trilogy is ''The Man With No Name Trilogy''). Personally, I think there is an order they fit nicely into, and it would make sense to do the trilogy-capper The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly first. But the first one is technically A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and the second one is For a Few Dollars More (1965).

2023-04-14 00:41:39 +0000 UTCComing back to say that while I understand why people like the John Wayne version of True Grit (answer: John Wayne), I read the original Charles Portis novel both movies are based on early last year on a friend's recommendation, and it is incredible how closely the 2010 remake hews to the book, right down to repurposing some of Portis' incredibly funny prose into crackling dialogue. I have nothing against the Wayne version of the movie. It's fine. However, the movie came from source material, and the movie without John Wayne is the one that might be one of the most faithful book-to-screen adaptations I've ever seen/read. I think the Wayne movie, as adequate as it is, does a disservice to Portis' writing.

2023-04-14 00:36:37 +0000 UTCThere have been almost 500 unique films and TV series suggested. I'm not sure of the total number of submissions, but it's gotta be close to 700 by now. Maybe more.
kaiielle
2023-04-14 00:29:25 +0000 UTCLooks like maybe I should do some suggesting. Heh.
Jason Chirevas
2023-04-14 00:28:09 +0000 UTCBecause the original is not on my suggestion form! I have received more than one submission for True Grit, and both people put the remake.
kaiielle
2023-04-14 00:26:40 +0000 UTCAnd to be fair, I haven't reacted to this genre yet! So maybe after watching the winner of this poll, we'll both have a better idea of taste. 😅
kaiielle
2023-04-14 00:25:54 +0000 UTCIf I was to blunt I apologize. Why the remake and not the original?

2023-04-14 00:25:41 +0000 UTCI picked from the Suggestion Form! I make people fill out the year and genre for the movies they suggest, so it's easy for me to sort with on my end. The only thing I look at before putting it in a poll is that I am able to get a copy to watch it. There is definitely an opportunity for traditional westerns in the future. 😊 Thanks for voting!

2023-04-14 00:25:19 +0000 UTCI will not be doing this, which is why I deleted your comment the first time you posted it.

2023-04-14 00:21:37 +0000 UTCAlthough these are all Movies of Quality, I’m not sure I can quite get there in terms of calling THERE WILL BE BLOOD a western. Among the others, THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY is a potentially big ask of someone who’s unfamiliar with westerns generally, and certain with the style of spaghetti westerns specifically. Then there are the two Coen brothers entries, one of which is a remake and the other is, we’ll say, a modern noir western. I guess what I’m getting at is I hope there’s an opportunity somewhere down the trail for KL to explore some of the best traditional westerns. I voted for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.

2023-04-14 00:10:38 +0000 UTCTrue Grit by a mile but not the trash remake. Watch the (1969) original with Oscar winning performance by John Wayne. Even though (except the ending) is the same script the trash remake comes off cold and boring. The original has a warm funnier and inspiring vibe especially the ending. Your going to watch a western how do you pass on an icon actor to watch a remake why do you think they made a remake because the original is a classic
Pacmule
2023-04-14 00:02:40 +0000 UTCI don’t feel like I know your taste well enough to know which one of these you will enjoy the most but I am a little a surprised by the early returns. But there are no bad choices here, they’re all very good movies.

2023-04-13 23:59:47 +0000 UTCI'm loosely aware of the first two (just familiar with the titles)! But the other two I had never heard of before.
