Breaking Bad: Phoenix [2x12] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm eager to get to this moment again in the editing process for the channel. Heartbreaking moment in the entire series for sure.

Maybe it's a guy thing (having a few too many brokenhearted moments with beautiful young ladies when younger, myself), but I cry each time I see "the Jane scene." It's the turning point of the entire series, and plays a huge part in the psychology of both Jesse and Walt. It keeps coming back, all the way to the very last scene of the very last story of the Breaking Bad general saga. A lot of people point to the fact that Jane got Jesse into harder drugs, but we all saw how lovely Jane was before, when sober. The real her. And remember it was Jesse who unwittingly lured her off the wagon. It was still her responsibility to keep herself clean, sure, but... Once she failed keeping sober, her lovely essence wasn't dead, just put on hold. And we see her wanting to get clean, immediately, when the money came. And there seems to have been a deep frustration with her father, deeper than explored in the story. Either way, Walt pushing her over (when shaking Jesse), and then letting her die, is monstrous. On a calculated superficial level, of course, this solves Walt's dilemma. Instead of letting Jesse go his own way in life, it brings Jesse "back home," so to speak. Whereas it had been clear Jesse was truly leaving forever with Jane. Walt cares deeply for Jesse, as family. But it's the care a psychopath has for those closest to him. A real caring, love, sure, but it's an over-the-top crazy self-absorption sort of love. As long as Walter sees you as, essentially, part of himself, of his own soul, in a sense, you're safe. But the moment you step out, you're an enemy nearly beyond redemption. Many disagree with this analysis, but more modern understandings of psychopathy tells us that Walt is just that, a full-blown but repressed psychopath. As he breaks bad, his true nature is revealed more and more.

That's a good interpretation of that scene!

Definitely did come back to haunt me!

I always viewed the scene with Walt crying while watching that elephant program as him realising what it is that needs to be done (Getting rid of Jane) and just him coming to terms with that possibility.

Walter definitely knew. They made a point to show Walt turning Holly on her side to avoid aspirating her vomit after feeding. And a scene with Jane turning Jesse to his side "in case you throw up".

what did Gus say to Walt "You can't trust a drug addict" Jane was a threat and had to be dealt with and Heisenberg did what needed to be done which was nothing. Everybody loves Jane until this episode so when you said I think Jane will be good for Jessie. My first thought was that's going to come back and haunt you :) Thanks for the bonus episode
