Rebels: Jedi Night + Dume [4x10 + 4x11] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! Before you watch, I need to tell you all that I have completely finished watching the season. The other reactions will come later this week and into next week. I decided to binge-watch them all so that you don't have to worry as much about what you leave in your comments across these final six episodes. It'll be clear in my reviews to these episodes why I needed to watch the rest before actually getting these out to you. 😅

Anyway! Here's my watchalong reaction to Episodes 10 and 11 of Season 4. Episodes 12+13 will be in their own video dropping a bit later this week (before the weekend though) and then Episodes 14+15 will come out next week, again in their own video. [Direct link here.]

Enjoy!

Rebels: Jedi Night + Dume [4x10 + 4x11] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

I LOVE Jedi Knight! When I first watched it I didn’t think that Kanen would die in the episode, I could see that something big was coming but his death wasn’t one of them, at least not 5 episodes from the finale like you said. But I always liked his death, and felt like it was a good sendoff. Some interesting details about his death: 1. So far that you’ve seen I believe he is the only instance of someone holding back fire with the force. And deflecting or absorbing energy has really only been done by all of our Sith Characters, Yoda and the Mortis gods. So this is a palpable display of power for Kanen as well. 2. I also think that Kanen basically knew he was going to die on this day, maybe not exactly how, but that he was meant to get Hera out, and that he wouldn’t make it back. 3. Kanen’s eyes return to his natural eyes before Maul blinded him in his last moments. Almost as if the force is gifting him 1 last look at Hera. 4. The Wolf named Dume is interesting because if this is Kanen which it seems to be, this is the first instance in which we have a non force ghost, or Nightsister spirit depiction of consciousness after death. Though it does seem to be at least partly the force itself talking with some Kanen in there, rather than just Kanen. And as far as the Dume episode goes, it was very nice to get an episode to mourn Kanen, though I do often forget about this episode as you not wrong about it being a bridge type episode. Getting us from one chapter to the next. The next 4 episodes are truly some of Rebels best episodes I think, and I’m so excited to watch them again along with your reaction! Similarly to Maul’s death, I think watching Kanen’s death after knowing his full story, you might enjoy it better. I mean just the fact that we get time with the characters to Mourn Kanen solidifies his death for me as one of Star Wars’ best. I remember that Luke kinda just goes on a Roadtrip with a near stranger after Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru die😅

Nice! That’s one of my favorites

Will drop tomorrow!

Pretty good episodes here. Looking forward to A World Between Worlds. Thanks for the reaction and you shouldn’t have to apologize about any of your reactions.

Don't worry, I loved it and had a great time. 😊

And so ends the life of our great Jedi companion, Kanan Harris (Caleb Dume) May he be one with the Force. So happy and sad that (what I imagine, the Force)...gave him his vision one last time to see Hera and Ezra. Episode never gets easier to watch. I feel bad for all the Ghost crew but mostly for Ezra and Hera for obvious reasons. Hope when i see your reactions for the rest of the season, you have enjoyed it. This is truly one of my favorite Star Wars media. Up there with Clone Wars (slightly above it in some areas)

Yeah I don't have a problem with his death, but I do agree with you that I didn't feel what the show was trying to make me feel, which is a surprise to me because Kanan is my favourite. I wonder if maybe I was just so surprised that I couldn't feel it in the moment and on a re-watch it'll be a much worse experience. 😅 Yes, the visuals were lovely!

I'm watching this alongside you for the first time, so i had a similar feelings about it. But for the larger story i liked that he died and to some extent why depening on how the season proceeds might change my feelings though i don't think by much. I feel like i didn't get the feelings the show wanted me to have in that moment, so maybe i will try a rewatch. However, it is a great problem to have when you can't decide on a thumbnail screenshot lol, loved the visuals.

Thanks for clarifying that. It looked like the Squadron logo to me but now I see it wasn't that. Still, a pretty direct way of insinuating that it is Kanan in *some* way, which is very sweet. I look forward to your future comments, esp since I've watched the episodes so I'm curious what you're gonna say ☺️

I know I'll feel better about it after some time, just initial reaction was so underwhelming and maybe I'm just bad at explaining why. I understand where you're coming from though! And yes, the vision moment so he could see Hera was very cool. Definitely my favourite part of it all. I think my reactions to the rest of the season will help with my reaction to this. 😅

Personally, I think Kanan's death was masterfully executed and I like that it was on a lower scale event vs. a big event so that his death can feel more personal in a sense and not so grand finale-esque. For me, it reminds me of what the Bad Batch and Andor do so expertly well, reminding the audience that characters can be lost no matter what situation they're in and for the Rebellion, I feel like that is something you need in order to continue making the stakes feel more serious. I can't personally see any other way Kanan could've went out, if it was by Thrawn that would've been cool but idk, the unexpectedness and happening out of nowhere to a beloved character is something you don't see often in SW so that is probably why I love it so much. So many shows get character deaths wrong and to me, Kanan's was haunting yet beautiful at the same time, ESPECIALLY when the force gave him his vision back to see Hera one last time, that was spine-chilling for me. With Rebels, with its narrative choices its one of those things where its made a few decisions that skew the traditional SW story structure and because of that people weren't satisfied with certain story points but after re-watching particular episodes a few times over we see that it was the right decision to make for character development and story growth. For me, that is part of the charm of Rebels though where it took turns where I was shocked and sometimes confused about but loved the choices later on upon re-watch. That's why I find Filoni to still be the best SW storyteller because everything he introduces and does is for a reason and despite it being unexpected, it will make sense to you later on.

The marking on the Dume wolf is the marking Kanan had on his shoulder pauldron at one point which was a trident type symbol that always to me looked like a restyled Jedi order symbol so as to not be like "hey I'm a jedi!!" but low key was still representing the order. It could also be a stylized mandalorian symbol for the shriek-hawk which was a symbol of House Vizsla, which would also make sense since Sabine decorates all the armor and Kanan sported the shriek-hawk eyes on his visor after he was blinded. The wolf also had bluish eyes like Kanan. The other wolves have yellow eyes. All these years later and I still am not recovered from the events of Jedi Night. I can't say anything about anything because whatever I say, even just low key stuff, reads as spoilers haha.

The Clone Wars bias is real LOL.

Refuse to believe that this aired 5 years ago... What a wild start to 2018. Idk how I'm getting nostalgic over something from 5 years ago but I remember seeing adverts for Rebels around 2013/2014 and having zero interest at all. Then I finally started watching it and fell in love from 14 to 18 this show was a blast. Had that Clone Wars bias lol
