Rebels: A Fool's Hope + Family Reunion - And Farewell [4x14 + 4x15] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hi everyone! I've decided to be nice and listen to a couple of you and bring you my reaction to the final two episodes of the show before the weekend. [Direct link here.]

What a show this was and thank you so much for joining me with it! I am so thrilled for this long Star Wars animation experience and I'm equally as thrilled to finally dive into the live-action stuff.

My reactions to The Mandalorian will begin when I return from vacation (I get home on July 6). Since I want to finish all of Mando and The Book of Boba Fett before Ahsoka releases on Aug 23, I'll be working my way through these shows pretty quickly and knowing that I'll have to is why I'm gonna give myself two weeks of a break from Star Wars media. I don't have an exact reaction schedule in mind yet for these shows, but since I need to get out 31 episodes in 48 days you can expect to see a reaction every other day and back-to-back days here and there.

Plan is for S1 and S2 of The Mandalorian, followed by The Book of Boba Fett, and then S3 of Mando. I believe I have heard a few times now that this is the correct watch order.

Thanks again for being here and for all the comments and fun fact sharing. I appreciate it so much and excited to continue the journey!

Bendu to Thrawn before he "died" "You cannot see. But I can. I see your defeat. Like many arms surrounding you in a cold embrace."

Thanks so much Justin! I'm glad you had a great time and yes, onto The Mandalorian now! 🥳 Once the TV shows are over, I'm gonna have to start diving into books LOL.

I watched this weeks ago but forgot to comment, I got overwhelmed with how much I had to say😅. But many of the details and things other members have mentioned so that takes some of the load off. WHAT A MAGICAL END TO REBELS! The final episode had so much quintessential Star Wars in it! Family, friendships, epic battles, outsmarting your enemies, Palpatein manipulating people, and crazy force lore!!! I personally love Star Wars in show form the best! Movies form the universe’s foundations, but Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Andor, and all the other shows give the story and characters time to breath and develop in ways that the movies often struggle to do. And I think that Rebels constantly builds upon its story the best. EVERY EPISODE MATTERS, whether it’s the introduction to the Purgil in season 2, or Zeb and Kallus on the Ice Moon, the “finale battle of the Clone Wars” where they acquire the Phantom 2, Ketsue comes back, Lando is the reason the Rebels escaped Lothal at the start of season 2! All that to say, that Star Wars Rebels is one of the most satisfying and rewarding pieces of Media in all of Star Wars! And with Ahsoka coming out soon, we might yet continue some of it😄! I really enjoyed getting to rewatch rebels with you Kaiielle! On to the Mandoverse!

Justin

You know, when I first watched Rebels all those years ago I was a little disappointed with the character designs, they look a bit simplistic, young, and by that I mean, aimed at a young audience. Which they probably were in all fairness. However, after a few episodes the stories overtook the chara designs and I got used to it. With the exception of the last arc of season 7 of the Clone Wars (and aspects of seasons 4 and 5) I reckon Rebels had some of the best story lines in all of animated Star Wars, with the possible exception of the Bad Batch, and I will stand by that. Though actually, Visions does have some astonishingly good stories shoehorned into twenty minutes or less... but.... Back to the point- (insert imogy of smiling with drop of sweat ;) one episode of Rebels that stood out for me was Twin Suns. The speed with which Obi-Wan despatched Maul was shocking to me. It's almost as if he could predict his every move and countered accordingly. Really well done. AP-5 was for me a welcome addition, I suspect Filoni wanted a 3po/little arthur type relationship for Chopper, a new Odd Couple situation. I wonder if AP-5 is still around. Would be interesting if he turned up in Ahsoka :) By the way, I have avoided all trailers and possible spoilers for Ahsoka so you may know more about it than I do. Lastly- Hera and Kanaan. I don't think I've seen a relationship like theirs in all of Star Wars, two leading characters who were also together. At the end of the show we see Hera has had a child, Jason, and I do believe that Kanaan is the father. Which had me begging the question, when did the get the time to... you know... Maybe that's what Hera was trying to tell him in the episode before he died, maybe she was already pregnant at this time but was unable to find the right time to tell him, and unfortunately that time never came... I guess we've all been there, needing to tell someone close something important but never getting the chance... I wonder if Jason will turn up in Ahsoka? Will he be a force user like his father before him? (I just thought of that as I typed this :) I look forward to rewatching Mando again for the umpteenth time, this time with you. In my opinion it is the best Star Wars live action tv show so far. Andor was good, actually, Andor was excellent, astonishingly good, I'm fairly certain we can mostly agree on this but Mando is Star Wars. It looks like Star Wars, it feels like Star Wars, hell, if Star Wars had a smell, Mando would smell like it. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect (only The Empire Strikes Back comes close) but it's getting there. I'll see you on Mando. And possibly the upcoming Marvel films. Take care, and I hope you misbehaved on your holiday ;)

Yes, very unique relationship. One that I really enjoyed!

Glad you enjoyed this journey. Humor, emotions and all that. One of my favorite Master/Padawan relationships. Kanan and Ezra will always have a special place in my heart. Felt unique from what we usually get from Master/Apprentice relationships.

It’s been fun following you on your Rebels journey. Now I’m looking forward to The Mandalorian and BoBF 🥰

Yes, the force mythology stuff in Rebels is awesome and this show will always have a special place for me because of that. Thanks for watching!

Rebels to me is part of what I call the Star Wars animated holy trinity: The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Rebels. What an absolutely phenomenal series man, the Ghost Crew were and still are like a fictional family to me after my first watch and now this series re-watch. I love that Rebels was like this perfect combination of the prequel trilogy and the originals, Filoni is such a masterful storyteller and I can't freaking wait to see the Rebels storyline continue in the Ahsoka series. My fondest aspect of Rebels is that besides the family aspect, this is the SW series out of all of them that goes very deep within force mythology. Clone Wars did as well with the Mortis Arc but Rebels took it a step further with the Loth Wolves, World Between Worlds, Malicore, and other aspects. All of the characters really grew throughout the series too, the storylines got even more intense, the humor throughout the show was great, Rebels was just so good and one my favorite pieces of SW media. I couldn't be happier that we're going to see their journey continue in live-action. About Ezra and Kanan's relationship, I agree that it is my 2nd favorite to Anakin and Ahsoka (that'll always be my favorite) but for Kanan and Ezra I love them because it was very father-son compared to other Master/apprentice relationships we've seen and that hit different. Especially since Kanan in many ways reminds me of Qui-Gon, I always see Kanan and Ezra as what Qui-Gon and Anakin would've been had Qui-Gon lived to be Ani's apprentice post The Phantom Menace.

So, the end of Rebels. It was quite a journey, and I am glad I was here for the ride with you. This was my first time rewatching it after it originally aired, and I think I appreciate it even more now. I did appreciate it back then, and my highlights overall are still the same: I love the portrayal of the evolution of the rebellion at the different stages and the life under the mid-to-late empire. I also think this show does space battles really well, perhaps not at the same scope as The Clone Wars (fitting, as the rebellion's assets are much smaller than the Republic's), but I love them as much. What I do appreciate a bit more than on the first watch is the whole crew and the overarching story, I did like it on the first watch, but it just grew more on me on this second watch. When comparing Rebels to Clone Wars, I would say this: in my opinion, Clone Wars has higher peaks, but Rebels is more consistent quality-wise. And while both shows start with a less serious tone and get more gritty and mature as the season progress, there were times that Clone Wars got truly dark and mature, while I feel Rebels didn't push it as much (which is fine). All in all, I love both shows, and both are great shows, different but definately bring a lot to Star Wars. Now onto the final two episodes. A truly great finale. Really wraps the story in a satisfactory way, and Ezra making his sacrifice at the end was very emotional. I love how, in the end, it was Sabine who blindly trusts Ezra, and how far their relationship has gone since Ezra's crush on Sabine at the start. They really have a deep connection now, a kind of love that may not be romantic, but it is just as strong (but, personally, I'd still ship them, now more than at the start, LOL). And what about Gregor, RIP, but I guess he already cheated death once and to do it twice would be a bit much (or maybe Ugnaughts have tougher skin than human clones). Still, from that first time we meet him in the Droids arc, he was always ready and glad to do his job and sacrifice for the cause, so it is a fitting end to him. And I am glad they didn't kill Rex... Rex deserves a peaceful life after the Rebellion, and with the clones ageing twice as fast, with the dates given by Wookieepedia, by the Battle of Endor he would have been biologically 72, so I think he deserves a retirement after that. I also love that Mart had a prominent role in the liberation of Lothal, carrying on his uncle's, Commander Sato's legacy. I could go on saying how many details I loved about the finale, but I'll just say it again, it was truly a great end to Rebels. And I agree, the glimpse of some of the main character's future is very nice. Not sure if you'll be interested, but just in case, there's a Youtube channel called Wizards and Warriors (a spin-off of the great history channel Kings and Generals) where they do animated breakdowns of the wars and history of fantasy and sci-fi universe, and they have a whole 8 video series on the Galactic Civil War (canon timeline), starting from the the events in Rebels all the way to the aftermath of the Battle of Endor. They really do a great job of providing a more strategic and "birds eye" view of what is happening during the whole Galactic Civil War. There may be some events that have been covered in novels and comics, and the last episode covers events from the Star Wars Battlefront 2 single player campaign, in case you want to avoid spoilers, but other than that I'd really recommend giving it a try: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2Qq-rUSt7b3RzrRLfjpViIqP5rE959xT And they also have a series on the history of the Dragon Age universe. Anyway, see you soon with the Mandalorian!

Thanks for all the info! Nah, Ahsoka will definitely be reacted to. I can't do all this Star Wars stuff and leave that out! 🤣

kaiielle

Yay! Where Clone Wars ended on a Big Sad, this show was emotional but very hopeful. Kanan's death definitely taught Ezra the importance of sacrifice I think. I looooveeee the mural Sabine painted of the Ghost crew. I am also so glad that Ryder's deception and the purgill were a surprise for you haha. I think Melch lived because it was a shoulder wound and Gregor died because it was a chest wound. The look Ahsoka has here is affectionately called the "Ahsoka the White" look like Gandalf the White when he returns in Two Towers. I also love seeing her with a Clone Wars era T-6 Jedi shuttle in the red and white. From the trailer for the Ahsoka show I think her live action costume will be her more dark blue and grey theme, I just really like the original symbolism (at least as it reads to me) of the Rebels finale. Ezra tells her to "come find me" when they part ways in the world between worlds and I kinda wonder if that wasn't a small premonition on his part. I think you will LOVE The Mandalorian! The episodes are varying in length: some are like 30 minutes and some are 50, but they tend to average around 40. The Book of Boba Fett comes after season 2 of the Mandalorian and is a must watch before Season 3 of the Mandalorian. Since Ahsoka hasn't come out yet I'm not sure when it's set in the time frame, probably either right before or somewhere around the same time as Mando season 3 and I don't know that you'd have to watch season 3 before you watch Ahsoka if it comes down to a time crunch for you. So it's Mando Season 1, Season 2, Boba Fett, Mando season 3/Ahsoka sorta for the timeline I think. Mando is a really fun show. I'd love to see your reactions to Ahsoka but definitely if that's not doing it for you definitely just watch for fun! Sometimes we just need things for ourselves. <3 Have a good vacation!

I've def looked into the Rex at Endor thing. 🤣 I choose to believe it's the same guy!

kaiielle

The person Thrawn mention "Pellaeon" is actually is right hand man in Heir to the Empire and has a very important career in the Extended Universe post Return of the Trilogy so it's cool we got to hear him for a few seconds in the show. Also that little hint at the end that Rex fought in the Battle of Endor made fans go wild as there's a whole fan theory going around that the old bearded Rebel Commando we see apart of Han Solo's Strike Team in Return of the Jedi is actually Captain Rex. I don't think it's been confirmed but Rex did wear a similar outfit early in the Season and both characters look very much alike so it would be an easy retcon to make. In the EU this character was given the name Nik Sant, or "Gramps" a nod to him looking like Santa. Here's the scene from Return of the Jedi - https://youtu.be/_AeraTowqUk

Excited for you to get back to live action SW. That is the correct order and I’m going to love that pace of releases! Thanks in advance for taking in that much content in such a short period.
