The Mandalorian: The Child [1x02] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Comments

The creature guarding the egg reminds me of the creature that Anakin rides/tames in Attack of the Clones in the Geonosis arena.

Yeah good point about the practical effects and Western style.

In classic star wars fashion, they take some throwaway thing and bring it back in some different show or movie. In Empire Strikes Back, Vader is talking to Boba Fett and says "no disintegrations". Now we get to see the disintegrations he was referring to, in the hands of another mandalorian of course. We also get to see the common theme of Mandalorian "negotiating". We've seen it with Sabine, Bo Katan, etc. in Clone Wars and Rebels. They're not the best negotiators and it's nice to see that theme continued. Regarding the realism and different feel, I think a lot of it comes from both the focus on practical effects and the Western style they used. Obviously practical effects are going to be more real and engaging, but paired with the full on western style that they shot it in gives it an extra level of realness.

I had SO many vibroblades when I played KOTOR, so very cool to see them in live-action. Thanks for all the info!

This is a great second episode. It's nice to see you going through the Mandalorian so fast. About the rifle, it's a disruptor rifle, the same kind of technology we see in an episode of season 1 of rebels, where they are mentioned as illegal and Zeb really hates them because they were used to exterminate his people. The Mandalorian carries it hung with a belt-like sling. The vibroknife is a nice touch. In legends, vibroblades and vibroknifes were present in KOTOR, (and in comics and novels way before that), I am not sure if they appeared in some form in The Clone Wars or Rebels, but I think this might be the first appearence of this kind of weapon in live action. I'll also add that in Canon I think Yoda, Yaddle and The Child are the only known members of their species, but in Legends there are a few more, including one of the Jedi masters in KOTOR and KOTOR2 (of course, anything outside of the movies and The Clone Wars was not canon in Goeorge Lucas' mind). But, as far as I know, even in Legends, all of the individuals of the species were strongly force-sensitive. We don't know if the species itself is meant to be naturally force-sensitive, but I think there are a few other species where most, if not all members are force-sensitive, for example the Miraluka species.

That rifle of his has some serious punch, removing the target more or less from existence. The knife he used to kill the Mudhorn with was a vibroblade and if you look at it as he’s waiting for the charging beast, it is vibrating intensely.

Yep Keeley mentioned that above! ☺️ Thanks for the info too!

Just a little Fyi. The species to which the Jedi Grand Master Yoda and Master Yaddle belonged was ancient and shrouded in mystery. Members of this species were rarely seen anywhere in the galaxy. The few members of this species seen in the galaxy were all Force-sensitive, and the species' homeworld and name were unknown. Overall we nearly know nothing about them and alot is just guessing. George Lucas always said he wanted this Species to be mysterious and never answered any question about their History.

I'll def check them out! I haven't had an opportunity to watch N&S in a while because they're watching a bunch of shows that I haven't seen.

kaiielle

Ahh I love that they're still a mystery, thanks for clarifying! I will def be watching the credits then for every episode and including it in the reaction.

kaiielle

No need to apolgize. Things can happen and this is really not a big one. Big thanks anyway.

Curaitis

Hell yessss. It's gonna be good!

I'm so glad you're watching and enjoying Mandalorin. These came at the perfect time because I was itching to rewatch the full series. Can't wait for the next episode!

Yay Mandalorian! Binging Star Wars is gonna make for a great end of the summer. I really like the balance of real and practical the show does, as you mentioned. Mando's friend is an Ugnaught species, so like Hondo's crew member Melch in Rebels-- we normally hear them sounding like pigs and they are usually engineer types. The only other member's of the Child's species that we've ever seen up to this point are Yoda and Yaddle and the species is unnamed and unknown really-- even where they come from is unknown and their culture. Also I don't think it's a spoiler, but the concept art credits goes for every season of the show :) it's one of my favorite parts.

I love how this show leans into established SW species along with making new ones up. It makes it feel authentic. Jawas are such an interesting bunch, I freaked out the first time I saw this. I don’t think I’d seen live action Jawas since the original film. If you’re looking for a good reaction after you finish each episode, I really like Nikki and Stephen’s reaction to this show.
