Rebels: Trials of the Darksaber [3x15] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

Definitely a highlight in the show, that's for sure!

Great episode! To was nice watching that with you. As you know I’m not a huge Rebels fan but certain episodes I’ve seen multiple times and this is one of them. Loved seeing Sabine let all the pent up feelings out. Overall a standout episode in the show.

Great points here, thanks for sharing! Also so sorry about the loss of your dad.

Ezra has always been a very, I guess, relatable character to me in some ways in how he's dealt with loss and tries to move past it. I lost my dad in a car crash, out of the blue completely unexpectedly. From your point of view perhaps Ezra's comments seem selfish or harsh, as he isn't trying to be empathetic to Sabine's situation, but wants her to feel worse for him. Maybe it even seems like trauma dumping. I don't think that's what he's doing. From my point of view Ezra is pointing out correctly that she has a chance to do something about her family situation, though it may be difficult and challenging, the possibility is still there. For us who have lost parents, or any loved ones for that matter, we simply do not have that possibility, that's gone. When you're hit with the reality it simply isn't comparable to anything else, it makes other problems seem minute by comparison (I'm not saying this makes it a valid reaction to downplay someone else's problems either). It is easy to be upset when we see other people do what we may perceive to be squandering their opportunities to make things right. Of course, this isn't true for each and every situation, but one person's situation has possibilities and the other's doesn't.

Thanks for your comments! About Ezra, yeah totally. It can come across a few different ways and I think however it's interpreted is all pretty valid too. The whole parents thing with both of them is an emotional and touchy subject.

Such a great episode, and the music was truly epic in this one. I also find all the training very interesting in this episode, both with the practice-sabers and the moment Kanan started explaining how it is different to fight with a lightsaber, I think it is the most in-depth explanation we get in any Star Wars media of how different lightsabers can feel to normal bladed weapons. I also love the emotional moments from everyone involved, and specially Sabine finally bursting and explaining everything she had been holding up. About Ezra's comment about their parents, I think it can have several readings, and maybe all of them can be correct, Perhaps he was trying (in a poorly worded way) to make her see that she still could make things better for her family... But, I also think it could be just an outburst, Ezra losing his family is clearly his emotional weak point, we've seen that several times, and, hey, even if he is learning to cope with it, that doesn't mean he can't feel bad about it sometimes, even if we work on our weak points and end up in a much better place, that doesn't mean that they've stopped being our weak points and that we can't momentarily slip back into being affected by them. I am sure had he had time to think about it, Ezra would have never said it that way, but talking about losing family made Ezra a bit bitter at that moment, and he just said what he felt in the moment, even if it was unfair to the other person. It's not perfect, and when we grow up it happens less often than when we are teenagers, but I think it still happens. So, a very human reaction, in my opinon. But as I said, it could be a bit of both, he is clearly bitter in the moment, but perhaps he also had the intention of making Sabine think deeper. Also, the fact that Sabine clearly took a long time alone to clear her mind after that conversation is also very human and realistic. Now about the force: everyone has a connection to the force, and everyone can be influenced by it, and to an extend "feel it", but the force-sensitivity (midichlorian count) gives you the ability (with training) to more consciously interact with it and manipulate it. So, no, not everyone can be a Jedi or Sith, but everyone can be influenced by being balanced or unbalanced in the force.

You're right, I think with a lot of time Ezra probably gave up on that whole crush/romantic side of it and they are truly just best buds now. But hey, even if that changes in the future that's fine too (sometimes the best relationships start off as friendships first). Ahh yeah great point about that line from Ezra, definitely! I'm sure that's what he meant too.

Thanks so much! I hope so too. Time to get back into movies.

kaiielle

Ahh yeah, that quote from Ahsoka definitely holds true! Very good episode indeed.

Obviously a great episode, not only because we get more Sabine backstory, but we see her emotional. She's been holding baggage that's been referenced for almost 3 whole seasons and it all finally bursts in this episode. She's a character that we've never really seen get emotional or talk about her story other than short references or comments so that makes it much more powerful. Also, you mentioned how it's some development for Ezra to see how far he's come. That's true, and also a development in their relationship. For a while, Ezra was still acting like he was somewhat romantically interested in Sabine, how she felt about him ("you know what i smell like?") but now we see their relationship really evolved into a strong sibling type relationship. I understand how the Ezra comment about his parents can come off wrong, and I initially took it that way too, but over time and seeing it multiple times, I now see it as him saying that at least she has parents she can go back to and try to mend the relationship. It wasn't worded well, but they're teenagers, so nothing ever is. I think the intention behind that is to say she still has a chance to return to her family, make amends, work it out, etc. whereas he doesn't, even though he had a great relationship with his.

Hey, glad to see you back. Thanks for the reactions drop today. This episode is one of my favorite of the show. Sabine's story is finally being fleshed out more and the long term build up see some pay off. I hope your recovery will continue for the better. Take care.

THIS, this episode right here is REBELS! Definitely one of the best episodes! Incredible acting from the whole cast, especially Sabine and Kanen’s actors. We got Sabine Backstory, Darksaber Backstory, big updates into Lightsaber lore in general, more Mandalorian gadgets, and one of the best training scenes in all of Star Wars. Now I want to talk about the Force real quick. Kanen brought up the point that the force resides in all living things, and that Sabine is too bottled up to “feel it” or something. And so that is one of the weird things with Star Wars, because there is a debate as too if ALL living things could theoretically “Use” the force, obviously most people in Star Wars don’t. I like to think of the force like this: Midacorians ARE in all living things, the more of them you have the easier it is for you to feel, and tap into the force. But the force manifests in different ways for different people, Anakin was just an extraordinarily good Mechanic and Podracer, Ezra could sense things and was extremely quick on his feet, Rey had visions at the start. Thus everyone could potentially mind trick and force push things if they knew how to, and practiced a bunch. But also everyone is more naturally keen on different force abilities, Ezra can connect with Animals easily/more instinctively. Quinlin Vos can sense an objects past as seen in the hunt for Zero in Clone Wars, Anakin and Luke are incredible Pilots, Obi Wan and Rey do mind tricks well, and so on. All this to say that if Sabine was to train for a long long time, I think she might be able to telekinetically lift a rock or two. But that is just a theory, Ahsoka said it best “the more you learn about the force, the more you realize you don’t understand anything about it😅” or something like that. I too was on team Hera, and I too cried just a little at this masterpiece of an episode! I am SO EXCITED to see you see more of Rebels!!!
