One of my favourite characters ever. Love him and love how these shows expanded out his story.

You know, the name sounded familiar to me and like I had seen it before. Makes perfect sense! Very cool.

kaiielle

Steven Stanton does Tarkin as well. Hell of a voice talent.

Maul told Ahsoka in the S2 finale that he was playing the end game. Ever since he came back to life Maul has been searching for a place to belong in the galaxy and every time he gets somewhere it's taken from him, so now he's ending it one way or another. The tragedy of Maul has come to a end.

I love all of this, thank you! I def didn't notice the leg on Maul - I'll have to pull up that scene again! Thanks for watching.

Ok now I’ve watched your reaction! And there isn’t too much to talk about other than the scene with the FIGHT! So here we go! When I first watched this episode I was also pretty underwhelmed, but after I watched it more, rewatched Clone Wars and Rebels, and saw both Sam Witwer and Dave Filoni talk about the decisions and symbolism behind the scene, I LOVE IT NOW! Is it short YES, it is the shortest Lightsaber Duel I believe. Which I also would’ve loved to get 30 seconds of some cool action before Maul gets sliced. But it being SO FAST and abrupt is SO UNIQUE, in terms of Duels in Star Wars. The only other one that is similar that you’ve seen would be in Tales of the Jedi with the Inquisitor and Ahsoka, but Ahsoka is unarmed there so it’s a bit different. And I can’t remember exactly who says what about it, but Dave and Sam said that the “Fight” was more a battle of the minds. Because Obi Wan opens with HIS ICONIC stance, and Maul is Phantom Menace one. So Obi Wan then tricks Maul by changing his stance to that of Qui Gon’s from episode 1. Maul then attempts to hiltbutt Kenobi like he did with Qui Gon, but Kenobi anticipated that and cuts him down! And they went with a short, efficient, and decisive set of choreography to evoke more of a Samurai style, and to show that Obi Wan IS OLD (56ish) but the Tatooween Sands really get to ya. But Obi Wan is STILL a Jedi Master with THE MOST IMPORTANT MISSION. He didn’t have time for Ewan style quips, he new that if he failed here, the Empire would WIN. But that is only 1 point of View! OK extra fun details! 1. Ezra stole Maul’s Mandalorian Gauntlet fighter😂 2. I noticed for the first time today, that one of Maul’s Robot legs was decaying, with an exposed wire! End fun facts Now for a personal theory of mine: I think that Maul partially new he was going to die. I think that at this point he just wanted to die with Closure, either by FINALLY getting his revenge, or by FINALLY accepting his own DEATH by the Man who was supposed to have killed him nearly 30 years prior. I think this because Maul’s last words are those expressing a shared loss, and suffering between himself and Kenobi. Maul also may be thinking about Savage or Mother Talsin when he says “he will avenge US”. In Maul’s last moments he seeks comfort from his rival, and expresses a connection between his own and Obi Wan’s tragedies in life. Which i think is very unique and special throughout all stories but essentially in Star Wars, where so many characters are Stoic or Goofy a lot of the time!

Yeah I will definitely look forward to it whenever I decide to do a re-watch of all of these shows (no clue when I'll ever get around to that though LOL). And I figured I'd drop all 3 at once since they're really great to watch back-to-back!

kaiielle

I'm glad others commented on how the duel was genius. Definitely on first watch it is soooo anti-climactic though I agree, pretty sure I had similar thoughts when it aired. It's a scene that improves on rewatch when you know what's happening. You are spoiling us today with these releases!

This combined with the link Sean posted... all totally makes sense! The power of HINDSIGHT! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels underwhelmed in the moment. I noticed the first stance Kenobi made, but didn't really pick up the other two in the moment. Nor what Maul was doing exactly. But it all is perfect. Thanks for watching!! 😊

kaiielle

I did feel underwhelmed by the duel like you Kaiielle when the episode was released but i have a complete different opinion now after watching Dave Filoni explained why it was so short. Basically Kenobi is at the top of his Jedi Game at that point, ready to become a Force Ghost. In that fight he used Maul inability to adapt that plagued him all his life. He goes for the Kenobi fight stance, Maul adjust. Than Kenobi switch to Qui Gon fighting stance and Maul go for the move he did to kill QG in The Phantom Menace immediately. Of course Obi has the counter ready because he watched his master die to it and replayed that fight in his head all his life. So that is why it is a 3 moves fight and a good piece of storytelling. He baited him. I don't think it is easy to pick up on it on first watch, i certainly did not. Thanks for the reaction. Looking forward to the finale of the season later.

Enjoy Justin!

LOL no. I def don't consume that type of thing during the daytime. 😏

kaiielle

Based on that thumbnail did you finally consume some of those gummies you should have used to watch the Star Wars Christmas Special?
