Ya know, it's funny, my feelings on these two Batman movies with Keaton. I have mixed ideologies formed from childhood experiences, modern trends and evolutionary ideals of story, narrative and presentation. The child in me loves the chaos, the comic esque nature of these films, while acknowledging that those elements are simultaneously not the most conducive to world building that something like the Dark Knight universe managed. While also often being a little irritated by the modern obsession with grounding everything in reality, and how that has it's own issues when the need for something more fantastical gets lost in turning everything into a gritty crime drama. The nostalgia of something like the Batman suit design and Batmobile of these, still being my fav of all the big screen versions. That's not enough for my adult sensibilities anymore. It's a myriad of opposing stances that have me at total conflict with all the Batman versions that I have seen in my life. It's perhaps telling that I went for the edits for these two, rather than sitting through the full length. While, The Batman, next, I'll revert to back to full length for a triple screen reaction with Jen Murray. No one version has everything I want and need from a Batman film. One day, someone might get the balance just right.

Max Shreck was almost certainly named after German actor Max Schreck, who played the vampire Count Orlok (basically Dracula) in 1922’s NOSFERATU. This tracks with the German Expressionist influence on Gotham City’s design in BATMAN RETURNS as well as the character designs of The Red Triangle Gang. As someone who finds the Nolan Batmans to be ponderous and dull, I’ve come to accept the Burton/Schumacher movies as a set of flawed curios rather than blockbuster vanguards. They’re all different enough from each other to be interesting, though one could argue BATMAN FOREVER has only diminished over time while the others have gained.
