Clerks (1994) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

I have several Kevin Smith/View Askew hockey jerseys and they’re all numbered 37.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Picking up on something KL mentioned during the reaction, yes, we 90s video-store jockeys were aware of what customers (and by that I mean male customers) were into when it came to porn. Sort of an odd societal side note, looking back: we were also de facto keepers of many male customers’ secret homosexuality, which we could always tell was not common knowledge when it wasn’t. Anyway, fun lil anecdote before I go. I worked at Tower Video from 92 to 96, which was open 9 to midnight, 365. Every morning at about 8:45, a handful of guys would start to collect outside the door. At 9, the doors would open and those guys would go straight to the porn aisle and rent four movies (the limit)… …and then some of them would come back around noon, return their four porns, and rent four more. Busy dudes, I guess. Plus, the porns were more money to rent, so it was a largely unspoken truth that porn rentals did more to keep us in business than anything else… …except maybe laserdisc sales. Anyway, yeah, CLERKS is fun now and was cathartic for us in 94. We felt seen and heard as never before. Ha! Ah, Tower…so many stories. Anyway, yeah, MALLRATS. Might want to bring a magazine…

Before I had seen any of the ViewAskew movies. My high school buddies used to call me Silent Bob on account of how introverted I was and still kind of am 🤐 Clerks is such a hilarious movie 😂 However, I think my favorites in the series are Mallrats and Dogma.

Thanks! I've looked up the list of movies - shocked to see that one just came out last year!

In release order, “Mallrats” is next, whenever you get to it 😀

"Thirty-seven! My girlfriend sucked thirty-seven dicks!" "In a row?" I fucking love this movie...saw it when I was 17, and have been a fan of Kevin Smith ever since. Good shit.

That's SO awesome! I love that.

When he was young, Kevin Smith loved movies and comic books, but had not considered it as a career until he saw an independent film shot in Austin with a host of non-professional actors by a first-time filmmaker named...Richard Linklater! The film was called Slacker. That gave Smith the belief that he too could write and direct a movie. He went to film school, but found the lessons and atmosphere less than useful and dropped out. Luckily, before he did, he met Scott Mosier, who turned into his producing partner for most of his career. They returned to New Jersey together, where Smith sold his comic book collection for $25,000, which was enough to make Clerks. He convinced the manager of the actual convenience store he worked at to let him shoot at night when the store was closed (thus the plot contrivance that the shutters won't open), and managed to get a camera and some cheaper black-and-white film stock. They cobbled together the movie, and through several instances of great luck, he managed to get it seen by just the right number of people and get just enough attention that it went to the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, where it was bought by Miramax in one of the most buzzy deals of the year, and the rest is history.
