Hey everyone! It feels like it's been a long time since I've been on here, even though it was only a few days LOL. Anyway, here's the watchalong for Constantine! This movie didn't feel like 2 hours long, that's for sure, it flew by! I hope you enjoy watching with me! 😊 [Direct link here.]

Constantine (2005) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

The scene happened so fast that I only saw white and just assumed it was a cig hahaha. My brain was like "Welp, I guess eating tobacco still gives the effects without damaging the lungs?!" 😂😂

I never realized just how much innate knowledge I had regarding the catholic faith just from having semi-religious parents growing up! 😅 So many things in this movie made absolutely no sense to you, that were just gimme's for me. That was kinda fun to watch actually! 😂 Assuming that he ATE A CIGARETTE, instead of just realizing that that was nicotine gum... That's on you though. 🤣

Finally took the time to rewatch/watch your reaction. You did a great job following the “world building” as they drew heavily from Catholic doctrine. If you haven’t had exposure to religious history or groups a lot of supernatural horror type movies will be an interesting experience for you. I was raised Catholic and walked away from the church at 18, never went back. The Catholic beliefs specifically lend themselves nicely to any supernatural story or battle with the devil/Satan. Bear with me, I haven’t given this a lot of thought in a while or tried to explain it off the cuff. The story goes Lucifer was God’s favorite angel who was jealous of humanity. He led a revolt against God in Heaven and he and the angels with sided with him were cast out. Being sent to Hell is someplace you can’t feel God. Usually described as a fiery plain. While I stopped going to church I accept there is more to this world than we can comprehend. I grew up in a haunted house. I saw things, had experiences over my life that prove something exists. Stories like this, when we’ll written get my attention. I have never read the comic but I enjoyed the movie and am glad you got something out of it. I also didn’t know there was a post credits scene, so first time watch for me. Thanks KL. It was good fun watching you take it all in.

Thanks for clarifying those two things! And I agree with you about Reeves, I think he's definitely a physical actor too even though I love his voice and don't really dislike his line deliveries at all.

As others have mentioned, this was based on a DC comic book. In the books, the character was blonde and British, so there were widespread complaints about this an an adaptation of the books (as you can see above with Steve's comment), and the movie opened to mixed reception. Over the subsequent 18 years, people have warmed to the film on its own merits as opposed to caring so much whether or not it's a good adaptation. Part of this probably has to do with Keanu getting out of what was seen at the time as a career rut following the mixed reception of the Matrix sequels and going onto the John Wick series. Director Francis Lawrence also went onto direct the popular films I Am Legend and three of the Hunger Games movies. Fans of the comic book also got to have an interpretation much closer to the books in the DC Comics TV universe on the CW. I saw it in theaters in 2005 and liked it, having no experience with the comics. Well before the John Wick movies came along to lock this in, this movie was the first time I started thinking of Reeves as a physical actor more than an emotive actor -- I really like the way he sort of spreads himself out in this one with wide stances, moving in sort of spindly, spidery way. He even flicks his lighter in a unique way. I think the script has some weak spots, but the movie looks cool and has a fun story, and I think the ending is great. You seemed unsure of your interpretation, but you only got two things wrong, as far as I could tell. Tilda is intended to be playing a male character, although I suppose Gabriel could be androgynous and/or Gabriel's gender isn't relevant. Also, the final moment of the movie is just a misdirect, not bizarrely gross: with cancer-free lungs, John has switched to (nicotine?) gum instead of smoking. The tapping motion that Keanu does as if he's getting a cigarette is just a misdirect to make it seem like Constantine hasn't learned his lesson, only to reveal at the very end of the shot that he has.

Thanks for the editing compliment, I really appreciate that! And oh my gosh it makes a lot more sense that it is gum.

This movie has absolutely nothing to do with the comic book...and as a huge fan of the comic book (and in keeping with a typical fanboy's reaction), that really annoyed me...and yet, I actually really like this movie. There are few movies with Rachel Weisz I don't like. And I love Peter Stormare's Lucifer. And Keanu...Keanu's pretty good in this. This one is weird for me. I deep down feel like I shouldn't like it...but I do. Ah, well. Good shit.

First off, very cool about you meeting the band and actually getting a little extra bit of time rather than just a super short "Hi hello". So glad the experience was so enjoyable for you! Second, I know this isn't an edit, but I just had to say that I've been loving your edits as of late. Not that I didn't enjoy them before, but the last few have just been really, really good. One piece I keep chuckling to myself about is putting in Pantera during Clerks' "heavy metal" intro credits song. Lastly, no worries about having a few scenes without much dialogue. It is a lot to try and take in and figure out, even with some rudimentary religious knowledge. I grew up catholic, but a lot of the concepts in the movie were not taught, at least in my neck of the woods. But I still loved the reaction, I have a hunch you are definitely going to enjoy it even more after editing. And I believe that was a piece of gum at the end (since he had a second go with the lungs), but I imagine you'll catch that on your second viewing. Thanks again for doing a wonderful job, KL!

This dude's in COMICS?!!? 😂 YES! Lucifer was awesome.

kaiielle

This is such an excellent movie!!! I'm glad I had no idea who John Constantine was when I first saw it because I probably wouldn't have liked it 😅 Just cause of how different it is from the comicbook. The best scene in my opinion is the one with Lucifer at the end 😈

Future_Boy85

It's aged VERY well! I was really pleased with the effects.

kaiielle

Oh, sweet! I totally forgot this was coming. I definately enjoyed this one more than I thought I would when it initially came out, and it’s aged well I think.
