Avengers: Endgame (2019) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction
Added 2023-07-28 00:59:51 +0000 UTC
We're here! The high point of the franchise. [Direct link here.] What a wild three-hour experience! Apologies for all my sniffles in this - I became sick yesterday! 😭 But thankfully I feel okay enough to work, so here we are! [PS! I am sharing this before HD is done processing. It has about 3 hours left on it. If you don't mind starting in SD, then feel free to start watching right away.]
I really hope you enjoy this watchalong with me. It's nice to see that most of my predictions from Infinity War were correct and that I wasn't completely out of my mind during that movie. You'd think I was based on some of the comments I received. I feel like I got the "what" right, just not the "how". I definitely feel better about not being emotionally distraught during the ashes scene at the end of Infinity War, anyway. Perhaps my body was saving the tears for this movie though. 😂
I was told there's a little audio Easter egg at the very end of the credits in this movie and this was after I finished watching/recording. So that isn't included in this reaction but I did go back and listen to it after the fact. 😊 Very neat that they included that!
I know Spiderman: Far From Home is technically the end of the Infinity Saga, but it also feels very much like THIS was the end of it. I'm really excited for the next movie to see how the saga is actually wrapped up and concluded.
Thanks for the support here and for watching with me! I know y'all have been waiting patiently for this and I thank you so much for being here and being on this MCU journey with me. As I keep making my way through this, the curiosity to dive into the comics becomes stronger, but then I get stressed about where and when to fit them into my life. LOL maybe one day!
The August schedule post will contain all of the details about what I'm doing for the MCU after Far From Home. 😊 So stay tuned!
Y'all are the best x 3000. ❤️

I do want to clarify one this that was mentioned in the beginning, The stones aren't destroyed, that would destroy the universe, he atomized them so they could no longer be used by anyone

The only deleted scenes I've watched are from the first Avengers movie. Eventually I'll go back and watch them all from all the movies. 😊

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but watch the deleted scene w/ Gamora departing at the end. Not sure why it wasn’t included.

Welcome to the community! Happy to have you here. Yeah, folks in Discord talked about the audio Easter egg so I went back and listened to it... not in the reaction of course, since it was after the fact. And of course Bucky would know... they're the best of buds. Those final scenes in Endgame are so great.

I got on Patreon a week or two ago for this exact reaction. Always a fun time to watch it through someone else's eyes who hasn't seen it.
I love this movie for many reasons, but I think my favorite of which is the overall narrative concept. This movie takes its' time with everything but in particular it's almost an homage to the first film. We lost none of the originals and they took their time to really allow for those characters to get their due.
Couple of things I haven't seen mentioned are towards the end. Not sure if you've already edited or not but Cap and Bucky share a moment before he leaves to return the stones where Bucky tells him that he's going to miss Cap, to which Cap tells Bucky it's gonna be okay. He's the only one that does and it implies the fact that Bucky knew Steve wasn't coming back. There also is a little easter egg at the very end, but it's just a sound effect from Iron Man of Tony working on the very first armor in the cave as he's pounding on metal to shape it.

I agree, Endgame is the better one for me as well. Infinity War just set things up for Endgame to have the real payoff. It reminds me of how I felt with the final story of Harry Potter and how that was split into two movies.

Yes indeed. One of the best movies ever made. There's a debate about which is "better" between Infinity War and Endgame. For me, they're close but Endgame gets the edge for the more positive ending. I remember in the theater just mouth agape thinking "I can't believe they actually did it." Probably the best parts are the chance meetups/reunions especially in the second half: Tony and his dad, Thor and his mom, Steve and Peggy, etc. Those moments gave the film such a weight. Looking forward to your full review, and hoping you feel better soon

I can kinda understand where you're coming from - but if that were the case then the post-credits scene with Nick Fury and Hill at the end of Infinity War would have to be different. Does Nick Fury call anyone for help at all and we just see him turn to ash? Not sure how that would work.

I hope I'm not alone in saying this, I think Captain Marvel shouldn't have been in this movie, and her film should have come out after End Game. Not because i dislike Captain Marvel or anything, just she feels very pasted on in this movie, i feel everything she did could have been accomplished by another character. I feel like this should have only included characters that were before Infinity War.
Shes still so fun to watch in this, but i get the feeling she was only included because her film came out right before this.

To be fair, I have no idea what a young Stan looks like. I've only ever seen his face at his older age. So when that man appeared, I didn't realize it was him. 🤷♀️

Oh, and I was a little sad you missed Stan Lee’s last cameo. At least you didn’t seem to react to him on screen. He was de-aged to look like he did when I was a kid. I’m sure you’ll catch him as you edit.

Oh wow. That was great. As with all the Marvel movies this was my second viewing. I was so invested in both the movie and your reaction at one point I said, “bless you” when you sneezed. Thankfully only my dog was witness to judge me. This movie released the weekend of my birthday in 2019. My daughters took me to see it on my birthday so the memory really sticks with me. I appreciated your observations on all the time we were taking to tell the story, to see the characters emotional beats. To watch through and cry with an already stuffed up nose, you’re a real trooper. The look on your face when Thor chopped off Thanos’s head early on; totally worth the annual Patreon support cost. Between that and the Five Years Later, I could see you had no idea where this story was going to take you, which was great. And don’t beat yourself up for getting confused with the time travel. I refer to this as a linear time travel story vs paradoxical time travel that most people are familiar with or the “grandfather paradox.” It’s a lot to take in while juggling the characters and acknowledging your audience verbally. You’ll pick up on the flow as you edit, I have no doubt. Glad you enjoyed it. Glad I’m a patron. Enjoyed re-experiencing this saga through your willingness to react publicly. And if no has mentioned it, Black Widow released in theaters before the Hawkeye series. Black Widow will need to be watched before you watch Hawkeye. You’ll kick yourself if you don’t. Anyway, thanks again!

What.a great time I had watching Endgame with you. You are the only Patreon subscription I have. One of my favorite parts of Endgame is the callbacks. Cap hearing himself say "I could do this all day" The Budapest reference between Clint and Nat. On the battlefield Sam saying "on your left". Black Panther calling Clint by name whereas in Civil War when Clint tried to introduce himself T'Challa said "I don't care". Cap calling Peter Parker "Queens". Tony giving Peter a real hug not the "I'm just opening the door." Hope responding with "Cap" and Scott giving her a look. And others. And Cap finally saying "Avengers Assemble" - what a roar in the theater! By the way the song Steve and Peggy are dancing to, "It's Been a Long, Long Time", was the song playing in Steve's apartment when Fury was hiding out in "Winter Soldier". Thanks for a wonderful viewing, it's nice to hear what a friend thinks of a movie especially one so observant and intelligent. I pray you feel better soon.

I have seen this movie, including watching reaction videos, probably a dozen times. Tony's death and funeral makes me ugly cry every...single...time! I also love the signature credits for the MCU original Avengers. Great reaction! Sorry you weren't feeling good. The crying probably made it worse. It usually does for me. Hope you don't have the rona, and hope you and your mom feel better soon!

I like the pacing on this movie. It's kinda, in a way, episodic in its story progression which I think helps. Sometimes, as you say, long movies can be loooonggg feeling and this movie always just feels like a tv binge-- like I want to see what comes next. If that makes sense? I think it's tied with the first Avengers movie as my favorite solely Avengers film (I don't include any Captain America films, just anything with Avengers title). It was a really great ending, sad yet happy.

Watching this time, I caught Tony's 1970 father saying why he didn't want a son just like him, would prefer a daughter ...... the quote ... “Let’s just say…the greater good has rarely outweighed my own self-interest.” ..... combined with what Tony did at the end. He did exactly what he knew would make his father proud of him. I never fully registered that before.

Endgames time travel is very interesting. There's so many time travel theories and Marvel kind of treats all of them as true. For example a fixed timeline is where all events in time are fixed events meaning they cannot be changed. You were always meant to go back in time and everything you did always happened. This makes it impossible for one to change the past or future.
Then there's the Dynamic Timeline the more well known time travel theory used in alot of media. If you go back in time an alter something like stopping the Assassination of J.F.K this will alter the future you came from, pretty much changing everything post 1963 where J.F.K still remained in Office. You'll arrive back to pretty different 2023. This is the form of time travel brought up in this film speaking on killing baby Thanos lol
And then there's the Multiverse theory the form of time travel we see in the MCU. This theory has us traveling to the past in a split reality to the one we came from. From here you can make as many changes as you want and it will not effect you're original reality, The Main MCU timeline. So killing Thanos as a baby would just create an alternate timeline without Thanos but will have zero effect the mainline MCU timeline.
in Endgame we saw six timelines.
1940s - Steve travels back to the 1940s, most likely post war to spend his life with Peggy. It's debated in the fandom if he spent his time in the main MCU timeline (Earth-19999/Earth-616) just in the background of everything or if he was living in an alternate timeline. Personally I believe it t be an alternate timeline as this is how this machine works, every other time they went back in time we've ended up creating an alternate timeline.
1970 - Howard Stark was conducting experiments with the Tesseract. Steve later returns the Tesseract to here but Tony does meet his dad so who knows if that has any effect going forward. And Cap does take some more of the Pym Capsules from Hanks lab so I guess some just go messing in this timeline, Hank can make more anyways lol
2012 - Battle of New York, Loki got away with the Tesseract while our present day Captain America revealed to the Shield (Hydra) agents that he was secretly working with Hydra years before Winter Solider. And also our Cap revealed to 2012 Cap that Bucky was still alive. So who knows where this alternate 2012 will head now. Also Cap does return the Sceptre he took from here but the Tesseract is off with 2012 Loki.
2013 - Thor and Rocket go to Asgard where present Thor runs into his mom. Not sure if this would've changed much in this timeline, Also Steve brought back the Hammer and the Aether.
2014 - Rhodes and Nebula travel to 2014 Morag where they knock 2014 Peter out and still the Orb. This is also the timeline in which Thanos, his crew/army, Nebula and Gamora came from. As we know from the movie everyone besides Gamora died so this leaves this timeline without a Thanos. Also it's very unlikely that the Guardians of the Galaxy would form in this timeline as Gamora was the reason they all came together.

Man there’s so much good I can say about this movie that one Patreon comment just can’t do it justice. So many wonderful callbacks to past films, so many character arcs concluded perfectly, such an excellent finale to everything up to this point.
Howard’s line, “Our kid’s not even here yet and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him” hit me so hard knowing that Tony’s relationship with his dad was the last real loose end that hadn’t been resolved yet. Made me tear up.
Nebula killing her past self is such a good way of just showing how far she’s come from where she was at that point in time.
I don’t think I’ve ever cried harder watching a film than when Tony died. He was my favorite character for the entire time I grew up watching these films as they released.
Seeing so many corners of the MCU brought together and all handled so well still blows me away every time I rewatch Infinity War and Endgame and is still why I consider them to be the two best films in the franchise.
Great reaction as always, I can’t wait to see what you think of later installments.

The scene where Rhodey talks about killing baby Thanos, that's the one where they lay out the MCU's version of time travel: no action in the past can change the future, because time is *always* linear. 2023 KL can travel back to, say, 2013, but even though you *go* to 2013 and that is technically the past, what you really did was make the past the thing that happens to you in the future, aka you continue to move forward. Many people were confused by this when the movie came out -- but the movie actually has a clearer explanation when Hulk visits The Sorcerer Supreme: branches. Actions in the past can create an additional linear timeline, such as a Thanos who leaves 2014 to travel to the future and fight the Avengers, but since everyone's on a line that moves forward it can't retroactively change anything that happened to anyone else.
Thanos' last line to Thor before snapping his fingers in Infinity War is "You should've aimed for the head," given the axe to the chest doesn't kill him, which is why Thor chops off Thanos's head at the beginning of this movie.
The man speaking in the therapy group right after the cut to Five Years Later is co-director Joe Russo.
It was actually only watching *your* full-length reaction to Ragnarok that I finally realized that Odin actually tells Thor where to build New Asgard -- it's the same cliffside where he chooses to die.
Funny: Thor's look is neither of the two options you mentioned: physical makeup.
It took the Russos so long to finalize the look of the time travel suits that they are *entirely* computer generated. Whenever you see anyone wearing one in the movie, no physical element exists.
Also, the kid at the funeral that confused so many people back when the movie came out clearly confused you as well is Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins), the (formerly) young boy who helped Tony in Iron Man 3.

Absolutely amazing reaction, KL. I definitely cried in all the spots you did. It is an incredible joy to revisit this movie with others for the first time, especially with someone that has obviously been so invested in a good number of characters, even those that some may consider "side" characters. I certainly understand the confusion about all the time jumping, and I think you got it for the most part, but I think it will be a bit clearer when you're editing. Especially since it sounds like you'll be making notes for yourself. But thank you thank you thank you for another wonderful reaction and for all your reactions.
P.S. I'm Team Bearded Cap, but they are both devilishly handsome.
P.P.S. It was probably hard to catch, but the final Stan cameo is the old man driving past the army base in the car telling everyone to "make love, not war" when Tony and Cap jump back to 1970.
