Signs (2002) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hey everyone! This is the first thumbnail I have EVER posed for, instead of taking a screengrab of an expression from the reaction itself. The only reason I did it this way is because of the image from the movie that I used. I had to sit there and look directly facing the camera so I could match, because anything that I grabbed from the reaction itself just looked weird. 😂

Signs was the winner of the Losers poll from last month and only by 1%. 😂 Don't worry, I'll bring y'all a reaction to Hook (the runner-up) at some point Soon™️.

I'm looking forward to your comments on this one and I hope those of you that voted for it enjoy it! Thanks so much for watching with me. [Direct link here.]

Cheers,

To quote god (or an advanced AI that collided with god) in futurama. Bender: if you’re god how do you answer prayers? If you give them what they want they grow dependent on you and if you ignore them they lose faith? God: when you help people the right way, people won’t be sure you did anything at all. I know it’s a cartoon show but I always found that profound, in that it makes sense that if god exists he would keep his existence hidden to avoid influencing free will, but when he has to intervene he uses natural laws and coincides to leave room for doubt. Like in signs. It seems they use the same philosophy. When graham tells this story to people. Some will say it’s a coincidence, luck, etc not proof of god. If humans were given a clear answer about god then it would influence our free will. If we know he’s real suddenly we’re obedient to him for OUR own sake. Not its own sake. If we know he’s not real then that influences free choice too since religious people freely follow their religion because it might be true. Disprove or prove god and you take away one of the free choices that humans make, faith or no faith. Many fictions write god as a parent that’s realised the best thing he can do for humanity is leave them alone. In supernatural god explained that after so long parenting isn’t parenting, it’s enabling. He wanted his creations to grow free and believe free, that necessities concealing your existence. Bad metaphor but imagine the fire department wanted to teach people to fight their own fires from now on. So they disappeared so the public couldn’t rely on them anymore and would have to grow up and figure it out. (I’m not advocating for closing fire departments lol it’s just a analogy)

It’s possible that broth graham and Meryl are right. Graham right that there’s no one looking out for them You are right that everything happens for a reason. Causality cause->effect. So everything that happens is caused by an event that came before, and that was caused by another event and so on. Suffering builds character The use of nukes lead to us not using them again. A family members death leads people to quit smoking. So it’s possible for every thing to happen for a reason (the reason is the good thing that came out of the bad) and still for us to live in a godless and fate less universe

The Sixth Sense is def on my list to get to eventually. It's been in a poll before I think but didn't win

"Gladiator" (2000) and "Hotel Rwanda" (2004) are two great movies with Joaquin Phoenix. The former being great for reactions. The latter perhaps less so.

Onno Smits

It's been at least 15 years since I last saw this. Still as good as I remember. It takes its time and really builds suspense. I feel the final couple of scenes a bit too much so, perhaps. M. Night Shyamalan plays a (small) role in every single one of the movies he directed (kind of reminiscent of Stan Lee), though this one definitely stands out as being plot-critical, multiple lines of dialog, and in multiple scenes. Mostly it's just one scene, and sometimes even just his voice, with him off-screen. His movies are a bit hit-or-miss, but "The Sixth Sense" (1999) stands out as a good one you may want to react to. Similar directorial vibe, though different themes.

I’m glad you enjoyed the movie. The story, the pacing, the characters, I think this is one that benefits from multiple viewings. The first watch is an experience, only after that can you unpack the nuances. I saw this in theaters in August of 2002. I remember just being caught completely unprepared for the bright sun as I exited. It was like I had to readjust to the real world again. Like waking up from a vivid dream you thought was real. You looked very engrossed, your nonverbals told the tale of how into the movie you were. Or maybe on rewatch I’ll notice you were unblinking during close ups of Merrill. 🤣. My go-to last meal would have to be lasagna. With spicy Italian sausage and at least 4 kinds of cheese. Then I would sleep through the apocalypse in a carb coma.

Thanks Galen!

Its been a while since i last saw Signs. I have nearly to none recollection. I know it was good. I mean Gibson and Phoenix, that means something. Anyway, thanks for all the uploads and reactions. Take care and stay safe.

Curaitis

You did comment that your vote was for Signs on that poll! Hope you enjoy it. Very cool about seeing a UFO too!

kaiielle

HAHA yes, accurate emoji. 😂

kaiielle

I don't remember if I votes for Signs but I really like this movie 👽 Call me crazy but I actually have seen a UFO once. It was a long time ago but I still remember it. I have no idea if it was an alien craft but it didn't look like any plane or helicopter I've ever seen before. In any case I'm really looking forward to watching this reaction 💚

It’s not your fault you have such a charming public persona. I work from home. This is clearly a “sign” to sleep in tomorrow. 🛌

Bryan Dempsey

I originally had this post scheduled for tomorrow, but I always feel bad knowing that I *could* share things earlier!

kaiielle

I have to work tomorrow but I so want to start watching this at 10:30 at night!
