Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Pilot [1x01] ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hello there! This reaction is available as part of my "Try Before You Buy" videos here on Patreon. For the TV series that I react to at the Insiders tiers, I give the first episode out for free so you can experience it with me and see if you're up for joining us to continue! You must have your own copy of the episodes to watchalong with as I do blur the episodes and have the audio muted. I leave 15 seconds of it up at the start of each episode for syncing purposes. I am not allowed to distribute the entire episodes in my videos as this is illegal. Thank you for watching along with me!

THE DAY IS HERE! Now that Agent Carter is done, we continue through the non-MCU Marvel shows in the timeline order and up next is Season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! I'm super excited to dive into this show and I'm certainly not disappointed by this first episode. Please remember to keep spoilers away! [Direct link here.]

Thanks so much for watching with me!

Cheers,

So excited to finally be able to watch these reactions! This is my all time favorite show as well as Marvel show, always a good comfort watch when I need it. So glad you have been enjoying it based on some of your posts I've seen and I'm looking forward to catching up! Thanks so much for what you do and for giving this show a chance.

JM

Thanks so much! Stoked to have you along!

I've been waiting for someone on my reactions to watch AoS. I finally get to see someone other than myself talk about the show and react to it and feel like I'm not watching the show by myself. This will be either the 4th or 5th time I've seen the series it's probably one of my top 5 series of all time it just gets better each season. Thank you so much, I love what you do. I'm looking forward to seeing reactions as the seasons continues keep up the awesome work Kaiielle :)

excited to relive this journey with you

Haven't watched the One-Shots yet! Not sure if I'll do reactions to them, I might just watch them and type up my thoughts in a post or make some shorts out of it.

Journey Into Mystery is the comic that Thor & Loki first appeared in back in the 60’s It is also the title of episode 5 of season one of Loki. Skye mentions Project Pegasus in New Mexico. That is the project that Mar Vel aka Dr. Wendy Lawson was working on in Captain Marvel. The project that ultimately gave Carol Danvers her abilities. I forgot all the little eggs this show packs in. You gaining more and more Marvel knowledge is awesome, it can be a lot, but it is such a fun extended universe/multiverse. My apologies if you have addressed this question recently, but did you watch any of the one shots yet? I know you have mentioned them, but don’t recall what your plan was. No pressure for reactions to them, you have been spoiling your MCU community with content, just curious. Hoping to keep up better with AOS than I have with Agent Carter 😆 in truth I enjoyed AOS more than Agent Carter, especially once this show finds it feet and really gets going.

The MCU takes such an L by saying AOS isn't part of their canon (or main timeline canon, whatever it is they say). I refuse to abide by that!

Laurel

Uhh ... Agents of SHIELD is very much part of the MCU and don't let anyone else, even Kevin Feige, tell you it isn't.

I believe someone had already told me, but I intend to spend some of my holidays re-watching all of my own edited reactions to the first three phases of the MCU so I can have some of my memory come back with those earlier films! Thanks for joining me on the AOS journey!

kaiielle

I'm genuinely gonna have to re-watch all of my own reactions to the first 3 MCU Phases to jog the ole memory. 😅 Appreciate your thoughts!

The adventure begins! Most of the movies have just passing mentions/relevance in the show, but there is one later on this season (can mention which once you get closer) that ties in very heavily and might do with a refresher watch!

Laurel

Yeah in hindsight you can see that the camera panning down on Ward showing the "sci-fi tech"-looking weapon is supposed to be the reveal that it was a good thing that Mike got shot. But they didn't properly establish that he was holding a "regular"-looking marksman rifle before that, so it doesn't register as well as it should. If this were a movie, that's the exact sort of thing that would've been caught in test-audience screenings and fixed in editing. 😅

Bear McCreary absolutely aced the show's soundtrack. The main theme has shades of "The Avengers" theme but stands strong on its own. He uses the same musical motif throughout, but tweaks it to suit different emotions and storylines. It's kind of mind-blowing how repetitive it is when you really focus on it, but somehow, it never _feels_ repetitive.

Onno Smits

man, i didn't realize how much i missed this show till that theme hit when they first showed the "Bus" haha, that theme brings back so much nostalgia, excited to watch the ride, hope you enjoy it as much as i did

And we're off! A solid pilot episode, which does a good job of introducing the main characters and their personalities. It's great seeing Coulson again! The orange glowing/exploding people and the mention of EXTREMIS being in the centipede cocktail is a tie-in with Iron Man 3, which was released a couple of months before this aired. As you may remember, in that movie too people down on their luck (mostly injured military vets) were experimented on (by AIM) and given EXTREMIS, which led to accidental explosions. Those were then claimed by "The Mandarin" (Ben Kingsley), which was a fake terrorist created by AIM/Aldrich Killian. I love the fact that AoS takes place in medias res of the MCU movies, filling in the blanks between the bigger movie-stories. It adds context and builds the world of the MCU by filling in some of the gaps, and showing how the "normal" world reacts to these huge events; like an alien invasion and the invention of crazy technologies.

I am very excited :) I have less strong feelings on the first half of season 1 than Steve does, I honestly think this show is awesome all the way through, so I'm going to be watching every reaction. I say this having not seen seasons 6 and 7 myself yet so when we eventually get to that I'll be going in blind myself. Not to mention the Netflix shows which I also literally all haven't seen. So yea watching along with you through all this will be interesting for sure. I'll make an attempt at leaving a comment on every episode of Agents of SHIELD but it's 136 Episodes so we'll see how long I keep up with that :P This first Episode is great and introduces many things. So many great characters, some great story threads and all that. The difference between what Shield says it does and what the population thinks it does that's shown in this Episode is also always interesting to see. The shot didn't kill Mike because it was from the Night-Night-Gun that Fitz had been developing the he mentioned earlier in the episode. The show doesn't make that clear which makes the scene where everyone smiles about having shot a man in the head a little bit awkward. I hope that's not a spoiler since it's all mentioned in this episode. I am very glad you love Coulson as much as I do, he's an amazing character. I'm sure there'll be many other characters you'll get to love :)

Pan

Not discouraged cause I'm gonna watch it regardless. Glad you love the show so much!

Agents of SHIELD remains one of my all-time favorite TV shows, and at the top of my ranks for all-time favorite comic book TV show...but, whew...the first half of season one can be hard to get through. There's a lot of world building--in my honest opinion--at the expense of good storytelling in that first half. And then--BOOM! Favorite comic book TV show. I think I'm gonna pick up with you around episode 13 or so...that's when things start kicking in for me. I hope that I haven't discouraged you in any way...this show is definitely worth it. One of my favorite casts, and six-and-a-half of my favorite seasons of television ever. And, of course, L.O.L.A....
