Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The Only Light in the Darkness [1x19] ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction & Review

Hey everyone! We're in that home stretch for the rest of the season! 😊 So so excited to wrap up S1 this week, hope you are too! [Direct link here.]

Thanks for watching!

PS. Funny story... if the video seems slightly off throughout this, it's cause this is how I recorded the reaction. πŸ˜‚ I record (and output) in 3840x1080, but for this particular reaction I accidentally recorded in 3840, but output to 1920 by mistake. πŸ˜…πŸ˜… So I had to "stretch" the squish on both sides. Yeah, I'm not that bright all the time.

This episode highlights one of the many things I love about this show β€” it doesn't waste time. Another show could have dragged its feet on revealing to the team that Ward is HYDRA, adding suspense for the sake of suspense. But not this show! It doesn't dumb down its characters either. Instead of having Skye not know what's going on or an extended "No, it can't be him, I'm imagining things" or whatever, she put Ward=HYDRA together very quickly because while the explanation is devastating, it makes sense. With very few exceptions, this show uses its time wisely, which is so refreshing.

I actually didn't like Ward (Brett Dalton) before his reveal in 1x17. I thought he was the typical stoic emotionally-stunted white agent guy, and really thought he was the weak link in the show. And then the reveal. And it dawned on me...all that with Ward before the reveal was Ward's interpretation of what a good guy should be. Boring. Stiff. Oh-woe-is-me. Puke. 'Cause Ward the bad guy is just straight up fucking awesome. And then--for me--Brett Dalton reaches the same heights as the rest of the cast. Fuck, I love this show.

I learned I might have brain damage after realizing it took me 19 episodes to realize I now have a reason to use my lap top to Stream your patreon while using my big screen tv to watch along... sigh lol Anyway for me this is such a heartbreaking episode for Coulson he has to see his love intrest but no be able to comfort her then get back to his base with half his team is gone and his plane and not fully knowing what happened yet. The skye amd Ward interaction is top notch from both actors, and cant leave out my boy Fitz all of his little quirks LOL

Like this episode. Don't really have fun fact to add but I try really hard not to binge the rest of season one. And it's not "fun" at all 😜

Lol, I didn't notice any squishyness of the footage, so that was a great solve! A tense episode with what was happening at the base. The side-mission in Portland was a lovely further exploration of Coulson's old relationship! MCU connections: - During the lie-detector interrogation, the team members are asked about Project Insight (codename for the helicarriers from CA:Winter Soldier), and Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford's character in CA:Winter Soldier). - Nick Fury, Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner and Maria Hill also all were namedropped. - Tripp is mentioned to be a grandson of one of the Howling Commando's (Steve Rogers' elite squadmates during WW2). - Marcus Daniels (the bad guy this episode) got his powers in a laboratory accident involving Dark Force. This is another name for Dark Matter, or Zero Matter, the main plot MacGuffin from Agent Carter season 2! You'll note it had similar effects and included the same aspects of being able to absorb all forms of energy. In the comics, Marcus Daniels was a villain going by the moniker "Blackout". RIP Eric Koenig, taken from us too soon. 😒

Skye knows! Yay? I feel it's better that she knows rather than not, but it's definitely questionable. We know from previous episodes she's pretty good at thinking on her feet, just a question of can she fool Ward? Lots of little moments with Ward, like the annoyance with May (correctly) pointing out that the release of the Fridge inmates is a distraction of behalf of Hydra. And he of course manages to squeak through the lie detector with some exact word truths - helped by the fact that *he stuck a bent nail in his finger to ensure he'd be in pain* in order to affect the results. Also get a few more insights into the team as a result of the lie detector - Trip's related to a Howling Commando, and May was married at one point. Great example of Bear McCreary's scoring this episode - Amy Acker (unsurprisingly) doesn't play the cello, so Bear came up with a piece that fits with her finger movements, but feels like a traditional cello piece (I *think* it might be him playing as well, but I'm not sure). We also hear a sample of this piece back in 1x11 - when Raina tells Coulson that Audrey did love him as she's trying to convince him to get in the memory machine, there's a brief moment where this piece plays before fading into the main score for that episode.

Enjoying the show?? LOL.. Doesn't it feel nicely tied in to the MCU? at least at the time it came out. For so long it was great to have our weekly dose of MCU in the form of AOS.

Calculatus Eliminatus

Fun Fact. The antagonist for this episode power comes from dark force which also created zero matter in Agent carter. The cellist makes an appearance and the throwaway line in Avengers gets fully fleshed out and played by the amazing amy acker best known for her roles in many whedon projects like Angel, cabin in the woods, and dollhouse. It is interesting to think about Brett's acting changes and I do think without the knowledge of Hydra you could see it as innocent for some scenes. But he literally was going to shoot may before realizing she was leaving. Rip to Eric koenig. He was so nice and he tried so hard to be safe.
