Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Beginning of the End [1x22] ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction & Review

Happy Friday everyone! We have finally arrived at the Season 1 finale of Agents of SHIELD. This season has been a JOURNEY and I am excited to continue it! I'm excited to read all of your comments about this! [Direct link here.]

As a reminder of my watch order, I'll be breaking away from AOS for a few weeks as I watch Season 1 of Daredevil! This is going to start right away, so stay tuned for some episodes next week. Once that is watched, then I jump back to AOS for Season 2. πŸ₯³

Thanks so much for watching with me and I hope a lot of you are excited for the other shows too! 😊

I think I'll find it funnier on a re-watch, but it just felt so jarring and dorky HAHA. Thanks for watching!

I love your passion for this show! Chloe is getting a lot better with her acting for sure. So excited for what's to come.

kaiielle

You make a great point about Chloe, I could definitely see that as well. Excited to see her acting improve even more as we continue.

kaiielle

To take your head-canon a bit further, maybe he was the person that Jimmy had in witness protection (because of the stuff from this episode).

The ONLY thing I disagree with you (when I first watched this finale) was on Garrett's demise 'cause I thought it was HI-larious. It was because it looked like it was gonna be the trope of the bad guy not actually being dead and he was going to come back even stronger later when he crawled up on that table. I was like, "Ugh, oh no (*sigh*)" then they quickly said, "Nope. We're not doin' that." So, it was relief I felt and laughter that the showrunners were like, "This ain't that show." But, to each their own. Excited to see what you think of Daredevil and more excited for you to continue AoS. Don't get me wrong though, I do love Daredevil, but I REALLY love AoS. 😁

Welcome to the worst finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D....yeah, it was pretty cool; but, it just gets better from here (I'm gonna try not to hype this show up too much, but fuck I love this show). My favorite bits: the fight between May and Ward (golden), the moment between FItz-Simmons (awwwww), and frankly just how bad-ass Skye becomes in the end, with little more than a camera-phone and her sassiness. Phil Coulson is the bleeding heart of the team and the show, but I've always seen Skye as the protagonist; and Chloe Bennett just gets better with every episode, and every season. Nick Fury showing up is cool and all, but my heart is invested in the ensemble cast here. Definitely looking forward to Daredevil season 1 (another fantastic fucking show), but can't wait for AoS season 2 (and 3, and 4, and so on).

# Thoughts on the whole season - The first 14 episodes, the show feels like a procedural with very generic characters... It's all done purposely, and very intently. So many small seeds and breadcrumbs that become huge later in the season. It's very good from a writing perspective. But for audience retention, it was a terrible idea. The vast majority of viewers never reached Turn, Turn, Turn (1x17), which is really where all that setup starts paying off. It's a bit sad. - One thing that really stood out to me is how much Chloe Bennet (who plays Skye) improves as an actor, just across this first season. At the start of the season her acting is, frankly, noticeably the worst out of all the ensemble. (I've heard it described as "Disney Channel"-acting... πŸ˜…) By the end of the season, I'd say she's among the best! - I really am so pumped for you to get to season 2! But I also think you'll really enjoy Daredevil S01. It is a completely different vibe, so that's a nice change. And like you said, it's a good thing to take a step back and have a bit of a break between seasons anyway. In real life we had to wait 4.5 months for the show to return for Season 2.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said in this reaction! I'm glad you had such a good time watching this first season. I'm confident that'll continue on next season. # Thoughts on this episode - Yes, that was the same actor from WandaVision! I'd like to think it was the same character (why not?!), though obviously that's just head-canon. - I think you may have misunderstood Fury when he said: "We want word getting around on that." He means he wants word getting around that he's dead. So that people stop looking for him/try to kill him. You thought he meant he wanted word getting around that he's still alive. πŸ˜… - The large gun that Fury gives Coulson is the same one that Coulson used in The Avengers (2012) to shoot Loki, right after Loki stabbed him in the back. - I agree with you that they really added a thick layer of cheesiness to how Garrett dies in the end, but I kind-of liked it to be honest. It's just a bit of fun. - Fury saying he considers Coulson an Avenger is really lovely, and a nice button on the whole T.A.H.I.T.I. storyline.

Thanks for being here!

LOL that sounds like me when I decided to watch Game of Thrones. I think I watched all 7 seasons in 3 weeks and caught up just in time for Season 8's premiere drop.

kaiielle

Great recap, wholeheartedly agree!

kaiielle

Yeah, I'm very excited for a point down the road where I've seen everything and can notice all the connections like you are!

kaiielle

I'll def save that for later then! You might have to remind me after Season 4 LOL.

kaiielle

I slept on this show for such a long time. I was in my digital-only phase and did not want to pay for physical media. Even when it came to Netflix, I added it to my watchlist but still never got around to it. It wasn't until a few seasons were available that I finally started watching it. I must have made it through 5 seasons in a few weeks. I could not stop watching. XD I thought they did an amazing job tying it to the movies with their subtle remarks and cameos. I was really hoping AOS would appear in the movies β€” aside from Coulson β€” but sadly, that never happened. I always like seeing stories from the "boots on the ground" people behind these huge organizations. I makes these worlds feel more alive than just watching Avengers or Jedi all the time. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much and I am thrilled to start the next series with you. Thanks!

Excited for daredevil. But let's talk about AOS. Many marvel fans thought the show would be something different. They went into it with the same expectation as the movies. But the long term storytelling of the first season was harder to grasp so many left because just like you thought it would just be csi but with shield. But the show rewards the long term viewers with a excellent second half that brings in pretty much every thread and creates a excellent story and characters that in my opinion equals the films. Coulson was the static character this season. His loyalty to shield was tested and even though he started to lose trust in the end he stayed loyalty and he got his reward by being named Director. The rest were dynamic. Skye found a place to belong. May became much more open. Fitz overcame his fears. Simmons believed in Fitz's capabilities. But a overall theme is every character at some point disobeyed orders except Ward. Ward was a static character throughout the season because through all of it he never changed. He kept following Garrett's orders even when things went to shit. His loyalty was rewarded with being taken away by shield.

The shows just grows and grows developing the story and the characters so well. I honestly feel bad for the people that didnt give the show a chance after seeing how excited you are on youre first watch. The show honestly adds so much to the MCU if you think about it especially as it continues to grow. I've had a blast watching this again for the 4th or 5th time with you, its been awesome. Next I'll be watching Daredevil myself for the first time so hell yah cant wait :)

Coulson is an Avenger! (can't argue with Fury) This is a good finale - we get resolutions for the major end-of-season plotlines, but still have some things to carry over to S2 and have set up some new bits. Skye is still an open question, we don't know how Fitz is, and now Coulson is carving weird symbols on the wall (which incidentally are something we've seen before - they were on the wall in the facility Ward infiltrated in 1x04). The Fitzsimmons scenes are a variation of the screen test for Iain & Elizabeth - it's available on YT on one of the Marvel channels (IIRC - though it wasn't released on YT until S4, so I wouldn't advise browsing to look for it). Looking forward to S2 (and Daredevil)!

Can’t wait to watch. I have mix feeling on daredevil. I didn’t like or hate 1st time I watched it, but the 2nd time I watched it. I loved it, go figure πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

AWW LOL there is never an ideal time for me to post anything! πŸ˜‚

kaiielle

I'm excited to watch this which makes it all the more painful that I won't be able to for quite a few hours πŸ˜…
