Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

HIIIIIIIIII!! Phase 4 of MCU continues. K, some disclaimers. First, I forgot how Shang is pronounced. Def a name I've seen typed more than heard in my life. Second, I forgot that we've heard/seen the Ten Rings group before waaaaaaaay back in the Iron Man movies. Just another reason why I need to re-watch them like ASAP, which I'm gonna try my best to start soon because I'm getting frustrated at myself for not remembering things.

This franchise is TOO BIG. 😂

Anyway, that's about it for pre-reaction info. Please enjoy! [Direct link here.]

Cheers,

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

Oh I understood everything! Sorry if it seemed like I didn't. My surprised reaction was at the reveal that it was their Dad who had been behind that all along.

You seemed a little surprised when Trevor explained that he had unknowingly done an unflattering portrait of Wenwu, but that's what Wenwu was talking about at the dinner table to Katie when he was saying that names were sacred and that an American terrorist usurped his name and The Ten Rings to attack the American government (Iron Man 3) and chose the name of an orange to strike the fear in the American people. You were taking notice of the faces Shang-Chi and his sister were making during the story though. That was definitely when fans of the comics were breathing a sigh of relief that they were acknowledging that neither Trevor (nor Killian) were the REAL "Mandarin." It was still a shock for us to see Trevor show up again. A very pleasant shock. 😁 The reason why hardcore Iron Man comics fans were upset is because "The Mandarin" is basically Iron Man's nemesis in the comics. He and the Ten Rings were basically seeded through Iron Man movies starting with the first one as that was the group that kidnapped Tony at the beginning of the movie and wanted him to build them one of his Jericho missles.

The first time I remember seeing Tony Leung was in the movie "In the Mood For Love." REALLY good movie. His co-star in that, Maggie Cheung, I had a crush on for a while and she was with Michelle Yeoh in a set of action movies called "The Heroic Trio." Those were fun. Another good earlier Michelle Yeoh movie is "Wing Chun" which is based off of a real woman and Kung Fu style. Those were in 1993 and '94, respectively.

Haven’t seen this movie again since it came out in theaters. Didn’t really like it much first time around but was more enjoyable this time around. Thanks for the reaction! 🤘🏼

SAME THO. He is a very good looking man.

kaiielle

Yeah great point, I do appreciate that they brought Trevor back to kind of give us a bit more closure on that character/story.

I am really digging Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) in those blazers with the rolled up sleeves and the rings around his wrists and forearms. 🔥🔥🔥

Tsai Chin is the actress that portrays Waipo (Katy’s Grandmother) and you have also recently seen her in AOS s1 ep19, where she portrayed Lian May aka Melinda May’s mother. This movie quickly became a MCU favorite for me. I agree that it was fresh, and really enjoyed the cultural diversity. I loved the family dynamic, a very classic origin story told beautifully and effectively. It had just the right balance of everything to make for a very good, enjoyable first watch and a great, feel good, fun re-watch. If I had too, I could find some things that I felt could have been tweaked a little, but nothing major that greatly impacted my overall experience with this film. Trevor!!! I remember you really enjoying his character in Iron Man 3 and couldn’t wait for you to get to this movie and be surprised. Back in the day, fans familiar with the source material weren’t very happy with the portrayal of The Mandarin in IM3. Keeping that in mind, the MCU attempted to address this long standing criticism in this movie. The character of Xu Wenwu is meant to be somewhat more closely inspired by his comic counterpart. Not being familiar with the comics myself, I can’t say if what they did with Xu Wenwu’s story and also, having Trevor come back to reiterate the previous fraudulent narrative, did in any way redeem Kevin Feige and the other MCU overlords, but I am happy that they cared enough to try. The MCU may not always get it right the first time. However, my experience has been that if and when they can, they do their best to acknowledge and correct reasonable fan complaints. It might take them nearly 10 years in some cases 😆 but if you just hang in there long enough...

I kind of agree - it would have been nice if they had set up the fantastical nature of Ta Lo earlier with some additional foreshadowing but overall great movie.

One small MCU connection the others haven't mentioned yet: As they enter the fight club in Macao, you can see a Widow (an actress from the Black Widow movie) fighting a soldier with EXTREMIS in him (from Iron Man 3 and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). I love this movie. They don't quite stick the landing (final Godzilla-like battle feels a little out of tone with the rest of the film) but everything else about it is truly great imho!

MCU movie, Matrix movie, and two Daredevil episodes in one day, is it my birthday?

Carl Johnson

Sweet! Can't wait to check this out. I love Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings.

Future_Boy85

Very cool! This one just feels like an adventure to me, like a cartoon to come to life (but in a good way)...and you can't go wrong with Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.

Steve Mercier

1. FUN!!!! 2. Oh yeah DUH! Brain fart on my end for that, jeez!!

kaiielle

Oh don't worry, I always decide for myself in the end. Unfortunately it's not easy for me to just disregard people's opinions, when it's been left so much and so often on my MCU reactions since the very beginning. This experience is very similar to my Star Wars one re: the sequels.

kaiielle

I highly recommend disregarding anyone who says things like that the MCU “fell off” or has already peaked or anything like that. For what’s coming up, it’s worth deciding for yourself. I still enjoy just about everything they put out personally.

Just to answer a couple of questions you asked: 1. The monster that Wong was fighting in the ring when we got to Macau was the Abomination from the Incredible Hulk way back in Phase 1 (there is no reason you would have known this; they redesigned him for this movie) 2. Bruce's arm was hurt because of him using the Infinity Stones in Endgame.
