Hawkeye: 104-106 ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

And here we are at the back half of the show! For me, this is where things really started picking up and it made me wish the show had been 9 episodes instead, like some of the other shows we've had, so that these 3 episodes didn't feel so rushed through. [Direct link here.]

Thanks for all of your comments so far on the first half. Please enjoy!

Hawkeye: 104-106 ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

There were so many people who I saw react to this that said they'd watch a whole "Rogers: The Musical." I was NOT one of those people. I had exactly the same face as the Barton family while they were watching it. 😒 😁 I mean, it was totally funny for that joke, but I did not need to see the whole song at the end of this. I love this series, but would've liked a different end credits. I feel like the spirit of the show does seem to fit better around Christmastime, but I still really like it.

Thadman

Nothing to be sorry about! Even though I didn't love this series as much as the other ones in Phase 4 so far, I'm still so glad to have watched it and there are memorable moments and parts of it that I enjoyed. I'm glad my fumble gave you a laugh. I'm so embarrassed by that, but already thinking of how to edit that creatively for the YouTube version. 😂

kaiielle

I’m sorry this wasn’t necessarily what you were looking for in this story. I do enjoy this series, partly influenced by my daughter who loves Kate Bishop in the comics and her excitement seeing her favorite character was definitely a factor. I understand why Yelena letting Kate act as a delaying foil was annoying. They really took Kate off too far into almost a comic relief role, especially in the last half of the series. I see it as Yelena, was staying true to her character in the Black Widow movie. She’s chatty, she’s lonely. She takes time to engage and marvel at everything new. Like her vest with all its pockets or new food. I think she likes Kate and this was her way of bantering. I think it’s interesting that she hesitated and spoke to Clint before striking a killing blow. I think she knew he didn’t actively kill Nat, but she still blamed him and her grief and rage kept her acting, but unfocused. I also wish we had seen Maya and Fisk more. There is more to that story and it would have been great to see here. I laughed out loud when you forgot Maya was deaf. And again when you remembered. It was a great moment.

Bryan Dempsey

I agree with you, it's really cool to see. I definitely noticed while watching that she uses her leg a lot, which is epic!

kaiielle

Thanks for sharing! Now that I know Kate is supposed to continue on the legacy, I don't feel as meh about all that. Hearing that it was Alaqua Cox's first role gives me some huge respect for her, damn that's amazing. I agree with you. Thanks for watching with me!

kaiielle

I forgot to mention that Maya doesn’t have a prosthetic leg in the comics, and I love that didn’t impact their decision to cast Alaqua Cox, they just wrote it in and used it to her advantage in fights. If you notice in editing she uses her leg a lot to block opponents and make more powerful kick attacks. I like how, for the most part, the MCU has shown the “normal” human characters having bruises, cuts, and long term physical effects from all the fighting over the years. I also enjoy that Marvel doesn’t shy away from having characters with physical disabilities, Daredevil, Professor X, Maya, Clint and also Makari who I don’t believe was deaf or female in the comics, somebody feel free to correct me.

I enjoyed this show overall. I agree that it felt rushed and could have used another episode or two, or even made the existing episodes longer. I also understand the real world problems that were going on during filming and how they affected phase 4 & even some of phase 5. This is still a top 5 of the Dis+ MCU shows for me, but at the bottom. The performances and chemistry between most of the main cast and the more serious emotional beats all hit with me. Marvel comedy is often hit or miss for me, this show was no exception. I do wish we would have had another credit scene of more substance to the Multiverse Saga as a whole. I do appreciate that all the hard work the Broadway cast put in was highlighted in full, even if I did find it a little cringy. Clint has always been one of my favorite characters as well, and Jeremy never fails to give a great performance. I really enjoyed Kate, and thought Hailee did a great job of showcasing who Kate is and her potential. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her, hopefully. My interpretation was that we weren’t supposed to think of Kate of the same type of partner that Nat was to Clint. I think Clint just said that to Kate to help her calm down and focus, because he did need her help, so in that way they were “partners”. I also think Clint finally accepted that despite being immature in some ways, Kate had the determination and dedication, and was going to put herself in harms way no matter what he said or did. Better to have her by his side where he could keep an eye on her and protect her if it came down to it. Their relationship made me think of his relationship with Wanda in Age of Ultron & Civil War. It was a similar mentor/parental figure dynamic. Of course Wanda is way more powerful than Kate, but she was also a “kid” that had gotten way in over her head at the time Clint met her and then he grew to feel responsible for her after Pietro’s sacrifice. Yelena was an instant favorite with her performance in Black Widow and it was awesome to see her in this. I loved the inactions between her and Kate. I enjoyed their “fight” in the finale and agree with the sentiment that it was just Yelena having fun with Kate and didn’t want to hurt her in any way. Again a little more time spent with Kate & Yelena talking prior to the fight would’ve helped with Yelena’s reasoning for not just knocking Kate out. It may have also helped the fight outcome not feel so plot driven rather than character driven. Like others have said, Marvel does have some characters that are legacy characters. I believe Scott Lang is the first legacy character introduced in the MCU. Speaking of Scott, did you catch that Scott/Ant-Man and or PYM tech was mentioned or featured in every episode. I like the idea that Clint & Scott have kept up some regular communication since Endgame. I knew going in that Kate was Clint’s protege/legacy that takes up the mantle of Hawkeye. So I understood what the cut to the title at the very end was supposed to signify, but I do see how it could have been unclear for people not familiar with Kate’s history in the comics. Having that knowledge also helped me see Kate and Yelena’s interactions as potential set up for a new friendship dynamic between Natasha’s legacy and Clint’s legacy. We definitely needed more time with Fisk and Maya. Alaqua Cox plays Maya and this was her very first acting role. She was a complete unknown and had never even thought about acting. Her Aunt told her about the casting call for a deaf Native American woman in her early 20’s and talked her into going for it. I think she did an amazing job, especially with no experience and limited screen time. As always, this was fun to revisit with you and thanks for all your hard work!

CheshireKat528

I fully agree, and its kind of a shame. I'm not sorry I spent time to watch this show in the first place, and I'm not sorry I spent time giving it a re-watch along with you. There were parts, there were aspects of it I really dug. And I'm glad that there are story beats and character interactions shown that are out there in the world now. Just as a whole, it didn't seem to really hit for me (and it didn't really seem like they stuck the landing).

Nice cinepals just did a reaction to a Daredevil movie. I thought there reaction was great. Be careful not to see it before u do the movie 🎥 😛😛

Perry Campbell

I'm enjoying Fisk/Kingpin a lot more in Daredevil so far and it's only been two episodes. 😂

kaiielle

Glad u watched it. Sorry u didn’t love it. King pin is one of Marvels top villains. He mostly fights Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher. I guess u didn’t believe the fight between Kate and King Pin. I guess they were trying to build up Female characters.

Perry Campbell

Pretty sure Falcon and the Winter Soldier was also only 6 episodes. I think WandaVision is the only series that was at 9 episodes. Hawkeye is actually my favorite after WandaVision of the Disney+ series. This is also purely personal preference so not knocking your assessment at all. I just enjoyed Kate sarcasm and snarky sense of humor more than some. She's reminds me a little bit of Peter Parker. I loved her chemistry with Clint, and I wish we'd gotten more of her and Yelena. That fight scene through the building was fun because yes Yelena definitely could have dealt with Kate in a second. I think she was "pulling her punches" because she was having fun. I also enjoyed the show's other moments of absurd humor. Maya was a super strong character. I haven't seen her show yet. It does have its weaknesses though. The Kingpin reveal took a really long time. The watch thing seemed a little contrived and not explained well enough. While I love Vera Farmiga, I didn't really enjoy the writing of her character. Both who she was as a character and her dialogue. Still enjoyed getting to watch it all again!! Now I'm going to start watching your Daredevil reactions! I forgot how good that show is too.

Marty McGee

IMO this was an okay show that added a few characters and resolved some issues between them. The scene between Kate and Yelena was more setup as Yelena just being playful with Kate and just putting up with her kinda like clint did, like a younger sister, she didnt want to hurt her just kinda put up with her and teach her some things. I think Laura was a Shield specialist at one point and the watch was her last tie to shield perhaps. Some people think Fisk is just a 400lb rich guy, little do they know most of that 400lbs is pure muscle he is super strong. Maya is like a daughter to Fisk in her backstory scene it was his hand on her shoulder when she was little.

Chris Elkins

Talking about pacing. Recently it came out that the Disney+ shows had no oversight like conventional tv shows and the writers basically wrote them like extended movies. Which, to me, is why the shows don't work as a weekly scheduled release and how they feel too short. Like give me Netflix style 13 episodes all dropped st once. Also the Disney shows are limited series one offs. Loki only got a second season because people loved it so much. Where the Netflix ones had a plan for long form storytelling.

Carl Johnson

Loki S1 was written very well. It definitely feels more complete than Hawkeye was.

kaiielle

Starting with Loki, I felt cheated by only getting six episodes. For some reason, Loki felt more complete in 6 than Hawkeye did. I don't know if the story was just told better in Loki, or if the Hawkeye story was too fragmented. Kate, Maya, Fisk, Yalena, and even Laura felt like too many storylines to include in a short run. I still loved Hawkeye and Kate especially, but wish there was more. Maya and Laura are the most mysterious figures so far and I really hope they will expand on them in the future. Still a fun watchalong series, thanks for the video.

Julian Calzada

It's funny that a multi-million dollar company like Disney can't afford more. It's too bad they have wrestled control from other producers and they are really cheaping out on the IPs now.

Julian Calzada

The reason I love AOS and the Netflix marvel shows. The longer EP count really helps flesh out the story and all the characters. While 22 and 13 are a lot we at least get the villains backstory and Motivations better. These Disney Plus shows just aren't long enough. I loved kate and Hawkeye relationship arc tho.

Christopher simeon

Okay so a few things: Imo this show was very slow paced for the first 3 episodes and then too fast paced for the final 3. They wanted to wrap up the whole story and they had to do all that in just 1 episode. All MCU Disney+ shows are either 6 or 9 episodes so they were probably given a limit for each MCU show or something like that (although that could be changing for future shows which is good). I would have liked to have seen more of Yelena and Kingpin rather than just having them in the last 2 episodes. I really liked the dynamic between Clint and Kate and I would've liked to see more there and Clint mentoring Kate since she will be taking on the Hawkeye mantle going forward but again only 6 episodes lol. This was a Christmas themed show so they obviously wanted to make it family friendly and throw in some comedy but a lot of it for me was a miss on that part. Tracksuit Mafia was just a throw in for comedy rather than a serious mafia gang which I was disappointed by. Also I couldn't take the fight scenes between Yelena and Kate seriously either since Yelena should have easily knocked her out if she really wanted to kill Clint and Kate was in her way so that didn't make sense to me. Overall I liked this show but I just wanted more from it. They could have explored a lot more and it just felt rushed at the end. Now since you are currently watching Daredevil (aka the best Marvel show to date), I obviously don't wanna spoil it so I'll hold my thoughts on that for when you get through the show but Vincent D'Onofrio imo is the best casting choice to date for any Marvel villian. I honestly cant envision any other actor portraying Kingpin better than him. I have a good feeling you're gonna end up loving Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin as much as the fans did. Also Marvel did come out and say a while back that the (previously Netflix) Marvel shows such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones are now officially canon to the MCU (although they were initially designed to be in another world similar to the MCU.. like the Battle of NY (as suggested in Daredevil) happened the same but that was set in a different universe.. so whatever happens in Daredevil and the other shows are basically what happened in 2012 after the Battle of NY in the MCU

Waamiq Ali

Oh it's hers! Okay that makes a lot more sense haha. Thank you! And okaaaay, maybe I'm dumb but I feel like that wasn't super clear that the torch is to be passed so to speak.

kaiielle

Oh yes, fully aware of all that! Didn't feel the need to mention it in the video at all. I am so happy he's recovering well.

kaiielle

This appearance of Jeremy Renner feels like a proper moment to talk about the horrific accident he was in a year after this show came out. I'm not sure if you heard about it at the time, but on January 1st 2023 Jeremy Renner was fully run over by an extremely large snowcat snow plow weighing 14,330 pounds (6,500 kg) whilst helping his nephew, who got their truck stuck in a snowstorm. He broke 30 bones and suffered severe blunt chest trauma and facial damage. He was flown by air ambulance to the ER, where he spent almost 3 weeks in hospital. Over the past year he has been slowly rehabilitating, from barely being able to move, to now being to the point of jogging up hills again. From what I've heard, I doubt he'll ever get back to doing his own stunts, but who knows, with stunt doubles he may appear as Hawkeye again in the MCU in the future!

Onno Smits

As I said, I love this show. However, all your "final thoughts"-criticisms are, I think, very valid. I agree the first two episodes are very slow, and I wish they morphed those into a single episode and would've had a whole extra episode of time/budget to spend closer to the finale. But I also suspect both Florence Pugh and Vincent D'Onofrio had extremely limited schedules to film for this project. D'Onofrio had like 6 other movies/shows come out in 2021, he's very in demand due to his immense talent and stage presence. ## Some completely random/disparate thoughts ## The soundtrack in a few crucial moments here in Hawkeye is a direct copy of the soundtrack from that moment on Vormir in Endgame where Nat sacrifices herself. So yeah, that was definitely intentionally referencing and making you draw a comparison. They also made one of the main themes of the Black Widow movie OST as Yelena's character musical motif now, which I think is great! Speaking of Yelena; As you may recall, in Black Widow she makes a note of how she never bought clothing for herself before, and now she feels it's a nice symbol of her freedom. And now in this show she's constantly rocking fabulous looks, clearly enjoying that freedom fully. You can also just tell Florence Pugh is having a blast with this character. Yelena's shark-fin type of hairstyle in that final episode. DAMN! 👀 Speaking of hair; I really like yours in these latest reactions! The reveal with the Rolex watch was mostly for the comic book in-the-know crowd. I interpreted the final scene (where Kate and Clint talk about her superhero nickname) to mean he suggested that she should take over the moniker. But every reactor I've seen react to the scene did not interpret it that way, so... 🤷‍♂️ I like musicals, so I didn't mind the musical number, despite it being extremely cringe (on purpose, I think). I do think we could really have used another post-credit scene to actually set up something new. You're blasting through these MCU projects quite fast, but for us, it was months-long waiting every time, and by this post-Endgame point, there was real doubt setting in if Marvel even still had a long-term narrative plan in place. Releasing a show like this without any substantial post-credit scene was not instilling confidence. Even moving the final Kingpin-Maya scene to mid-credits could have really helped, imho.

Onno Smits

A couple of points: Laura was Agent 19, and was an agent of SHIELD. The watch could identify her, that's why Clint wanted it so badly. (They didn't make this super clear and was one of the weak points of the show, providing a very artificial motivation because they never really explained it.) As for Kate's superhero name: she is the new Hawkeye. Marvel has a history of having legacy heroes where someone new takes over the mantle of a prior hero (e.g. Sam becoming the new Captain America).

The Dingo

Thanks! 😊

kaiielle

I like that theory!

kaiielle

There is a theory: in Age of Ulton, when Clint was flying the Quinjet and Nat was about to get off on the motorcycle, he told her "Give 'em hell". The theory goes that this was what Clint and Nat always said - it was their catch phrased going into a fight where they were outgunned. In the last episode, when Clint turns to Kate and says "Let's give them hell", it was Kate formally taking Nat's place as his partner in his eyes.

The Dingo

*fwiw, Clint was introduced in the first THOR movie. 😉

William

Can't wait to dive into these last three reactions ASAP! It's hard for me to pick a favourite MCU show, as they are all so different making a comparison difficult. However, Hawkeye is really high up there among the top contenders, I really dug it! Not counting Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., of course, which is my absolute favourite by a country mile!

Onno Smits

Oh, how fortunate I'm just now finishing up your DAREDEVIL 1x04 reaction. I'm so glad you finally had the epiphany about who Wilson (and Vanessa) is. That was a fun reaction and I’ve certainly been looking forward to the back half of HAWKEYE with ya as well. 👍🏼
