Dogma (1999) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Happy weekend everybody! Extra thank you to Tyler for providing me a copy of this back when I first started the View Askewniverse. I know this movie will be a tough one to watch along with me if you don't own your own copy of the film already. The edited version will drop later today. Please enjoy! And thanks for watching! Dogma (1999) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Such a great reaction, KL! This is my favourite Kevin Smith film I've seen - so far - and your understanding of it's creative liberties is appreciated. And yes, Alan Rickman stole every scene! He's my favourite part. 🙏

FYI, the reason the movie is unavailable is that Harvey Weinstein still controls the rights. Smith sold Clerks to Miramax, aka Disney, at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, back when Weinstein was the head of Miramax (he and his brother Bob founded the company). Universal swooped in and made Mallrats, but Mallrats was a commercial bomb, and so Smith went back to Miramax for Chasing Amy. When it came to this, Miramax was willing to make it, but Disney refused to take the responsibility of releasing it due to the controversial religious content, so the theatrical distribution rights were licensed to Lionsgate, and the DVD was distributed by Sony. Since the film was initially set up at Miramax and the movie was merely licensed out, those rights ended up reverting personally to the Weinsteins. After Smith confirmed that the money would not go to Harvey himself, he made several offers to buy the rights to the film back, but Harvey refuses to sell it to him, just out of spite.

That was an awesome watch-along. This was actually my first Kevin Smith movie. What drew me to it was the topics/themes and of course, George Carlin (RIP). I had that DVD with me all through college and gave it away long after graduation. Definitely my favorite in the VASU before I even knew what that was.

Can’t wait for this reaction!

Gonna have to break out my old-fashioned DVD to enjoy this one with you...absolutely spectacular.

Thanks for being there with the digital copy Tyler. I didn’t know there was one circulating anywhere. I happen to have a physical copy. First time I’ve had a reason to dust it off and watch in a while. I was raised Catholic and fell off as soon as I as I left for college. I guess that specific background gives me an appreciation for the material those who didn’t may not. I remember a couple years after this I gave my younger (by 8 years) brother a Buddy Christ pvc statue for his birthday. He loved it, my mom considered it blasphemous. I do remember devout Catholics had opinions when this came out. I think Kevin Smith really presented some thoughtful ideas on religion and belief that 25 years later I think more people are gravitating too. I’ve had unexplainable supernatural experiences my whole life so while I don’t discount the idea of a Creator, I find it hard to believe They would take roll on Sunday mornings. I’m glad you enjoyed the movie. I really like the cast. I think everyone was cast perfectly for their roll. My personal favorite is Chasing Amy. I think it’s the most mature and best written. And again ahead of its time. I mean a straight white man wrote that movie in ‘96/‘97. Think about that for a second. My not-so Guilty pleasure is Mallrats, because I’m an ‘80s comic book nerd. Comic books and malls, what else can I say? While it’s not part of the askewneverse I love Jersey Girl, which seems to be Kevin Smith’s most personal film. I hope you squeeze it in, I think it’s worth your time. Back to this movie, I didn’t notice how often you spoke or didn’t. Your commentary was quite complimentary to the story as it went along. Great fun to watch as always on this cold, cold Iowa day. Looking forward to your thoughts in the edited version. Thanks as always for sharing KL!
