Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: End of the Beginning [1x16] ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction & Review

Happy Friday everyone! Here's the final episode of AOS for the week. Thanks for all of your fun comments on the latest episodes! [Direct link here.]

Please remember not to confirm or deny my theories as I would naturally prefer to wait until the show does that for us.

Please enjoy! Have a great weekend.

I've fixed that, sorry! And thanks for the info!

Hey KL! This post is missing tags. I couldn't find it back easily. Now that you've watched the next episode, I can post the comment I wanted to post: CA: Winter Soldier came out 2 days after this episode. That's why there was no end tag to this episode, instead, it was a promo for the movie's theatrical release. The MCU connection is related: Sitwell shows up in this episode, but he can't partake in the mission as he's called away to the Lemurian Star. That's the satellite launch vessel he is then taken hostage in for the opening action sequence of the movie. From my personal experience, CA: Winter Soldier actually released a week earlier here in The Netherlands, so I had watched the movie already when this episode aired. On the one hand it felt kinda cool to be "in the loop" so early. But on the other hand, I was a bit pissed that I was clearly not seeing the events in the order they were intended, and I only had myself to blame. This was a weird thing during Phase 2 where they would release the movies on the Thursday _before_ the US release in many EU countries. Thankfully that changed to a simultaneous worldwide release later on.

Not really an MCU connection, but a comic Easter Egg for Deathlok is when Fitz's toys were searching for him at the old race track and they found him and Skye changed the spectrum to tell if it's him and it was like an x-ray so you could see the cybernetics. That's the way Deathlok looks in the comics, like a cyborg zombie. I never read his comics, but I feel I saw the covers of his comics back in the 70s? (*ahem*) I mean, someone probably told me about seeing them in the 70s. Eh heh heh. Aaanyway, his comic back then was called "Deathlok: The Demolisher" and I didn't know anything about him. Apparently, there have been multiple Deathloks throughout the history of comics, 5 or 6. Didn't even realize 'til around this time where this aired that there was one that was a black guy. Hard to tell when he looks like a cyborg zombie. Found that out at the last Comicon, I believe, that I went to where I saw some old comics of him. I was like, "He's black?? Oh, cool." Anyway, I thought it was cool that they showed the audience what he looked like in the comics that way to basically say to people who are familiar with him, "Yeah, that's the same guy."

That's fun!

A movie released between this episode and the next one. When this episode first aired, it had a scene from that movie as the "post-credits" scene after Hand.

In this day and age, mods are the lifeblood of civilization. Thank you for all the work you and others do.

Richard Flores

There's like a 20% chance that you'd consider the MCU connections and some other stuff I wanna say to fall into that "no foreshadowing" warning you keep saying, so I'll wait to write it until you're further along in the show. I have a (tiny) third-degree burn on the back of my hand, and I can confirm it didn't hurt when it was happening. It was a wild experience to watch my flesh bubble away whilst not feeling anything. 0/5 stars, would not recommend. It's now a shitty scar which doesn't even have a good story attached.

Onno Smits

Won't say anything until next episode except that someone in shield being the clairvoyant was a shock to me the first time around. I always disliked hand and her letting Fitz and ward go on a mission without backup seemed really sus but I just thought it was her way of doing things.

Difficult to say too much about this episode - there are some relevant details that everyone would have known at the time it aired, but shouldn't be revealed according to a strict interpretation of spoiler rules (as someone who mods for a couple of other reactors, I get just how hard this can be sometimes). However, there are some things we can talk about!. Skye is now an official Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. - quite a bit of growth from the Rising Tide hacker we met in the pilot - and the bond the team now has is clearly shown with how proud everyone is of her when she gets her badge. May showing how capable she is - no hesitation in protecting her secret with the shots at Fitz directly to the head and heart. And the Clairvoyant is seemingly an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., who passed information to Raina and Mr Po - the line from Mr Po in 1x11 about Coulson's father's death being a "defining moment", and Raina's knowledge of his relationship with the cellist both coming from Coulson's psych evaluation. Looking forward to the next episode!

When I first watched the show, I shipped Ward and Skye from episode 1. It just felt like classic good looking people in a show always end up in a relationship, that's why I shipped them.

Carl Johnson

Thanks for watching!

Good theory!

kaiielle

As a first time watcher, I personaly disagree with your theory. I think angent hand already knows what the clairvoyant wants to know/is trying to figure out. And hand is simply doing her own thing. Simply involving information about blue alien from earlier. Information hand does not want the team or clairvoyant to find out.

This was an intense crazy episode so much going on, Deathloks upgrades are insane in this episode he's becoming unstoppable. Its so fun and excited watching you react to this. I dont want to say to much, just like you said this is really where things change and take off I cant wait to see youre facial expressions coming up :) should be interesting for sure... I know i had some interesting ones when I first watched the show !
